Title: Need help - Can't think of a couple old scenarios
Post by: oboe on April 24, 2018, 07:17:53 PM
I recently used the new AH Events site to see all the scenarios I've participated in, but it only goes back to 2008 I think.

I recall being a TBM pilot in a scenario which (I think) simulated amphibious landings on Sicily.   Can anyone remember what scenario that was, and when it was run?

I also recall being a B-17 pilot in a scenario somewhere probably around that time, but I don't recall any more about that one.  I think it was just a one frame walk-on for me in that one.

I there a full list of all the scenarios anywhere?   The new AH events site is pretty fantastic but doesn't include the older scenarios.

Thanks!

Your TBM one was Operation Husky in I believe 2007-ish?

If it were around that time there was DGS, but I thought you were with us in P-38s?

Yep, I flew a '38 in DGS.   My memory ain't what it used to be, but I still have a vivid memory of sweaty palms and as much anxiety and tension as a computer game can generate as we escorted the heavies so deep into enemy territory -- I was sure we'd never get out alive.  I remember landing practically on fumes after one particularly harrowing escort mission.   So much fun with Del and Fencer and Guppy.  I shoulda taken the time to write and after-action report.

I must be wrong about the B-17s, but I do remember flying a Fort with a group of dedicated bombers and gaining a lot of respect for how they handled themselves and their formations.  Just can't place where that could've been.

Yes, pretty sure now it was Husky, thanks guys.   The TBM is sort of a secret love of mine.  Not sure why; its such a big, ungainly-looking bird.  But its a real sweet handling ship in the air, and honestly there is something about flying a personal favorite in a scenario setting versus the constant maelstrom of action in the MA.   The MA seems so, I don't know, superficial (for lack of a better word) compared to flying in scenarios.

Brooke, thanks for your excellent record-keeping.   You are amazing.

 :salute

From 2000 to 2004 you had, exact dates need some more research

Afrika Korps - 2000
Hostile Shores - 2001? (hypothetical invasion of Norway)
Battle of the Ruhr -2002 (8th Air Force)
Operation Husky - 2002? (Sicily Invasion)
Operation Iceberg - 2003? (Okinawa)
Operation Watchtower - 2004? (Guadalcanal)
Kadesh - 2004? (Egyptian-Israeli war 1956)

There was also a few BoBs and that darned Rangoon in there as well. :)

Might've been Battle of the Ruhr then, thanks Nef!

Here ya go oboe.  From that 3 hour run in DGS near the end when the fuel was low.  You are going up and I'm headed down, both shooting at 109s :)

Sorry I don't know how I missed responding to this. Dan, that is a great screenshot and indicative of the kind of fighting I remember about that frame.  I think probably that one would be listed in my top of what I consider my crowning achivements.  That, and the nude on the nose of "Beautiful Lass".  I spent a lot of time on her.

Bagration was actually called Niemen aka Battle for the Niemen.

It ran the month of February, 2003. I still have it on my hard drive.

Participants in that scenario were creating and sharing strat maps in early November, 2002, almost three months before the first frame. Tilt must have released the write-up and rules in October and I only recall one rule modification after that.

This was back when scenarios were run much differently then today.

Spot on Easy I knew I didn't have the name right.   :aok

It was one of the great ones.  There was a bit of to and fro stuff between teams I didn't like but darn it the action was staggering.
The last minute of the last frame and it was undecided!

The Soviets crossed the river with LVTs, climbed the bank and let troops run.  The last surviving 190 in the area (DJ111) came diving in from nowhere with a pile of Yaks and La7s on his tail.  He was never going to make it.  He barrel rolled and the VVS overshot and keeping the move going swept through guns blazing.  Some troops went down and there was no time to run any more.

Victory for the Axis with the last shots of the 4th Frame!

Screams, yells, it was all erupting.

Yeah we don't make them like that anymore.   :cry

And that was at a time when the MA emptied out to zero players after 2am Pacific time most night. A hundred and fifty players at prime time was a good night back then iirc.

Good to see you're still around and active.

Missed at least one "Midway" from that list as well.

My all time favourite was Stalin's Fourth. So much work, so much angst.  So, so much joy!

T-34 vs Pnz IV, La5 vs G2 G6 and Buffalo (F4f), Bostons, Il2s and lots of M3s and LVTS.   Nothing above about 5k for the most part.  Air war had to follow the ground war.  Blast a hole, pour through, protect the flanks, dig in!
