Fantastic to see some real Daimler-Benz engines in flying 109's. That crew has some superb restorations.

Cool, you got the link to work?  I was not getting it to work on my end  after posting.  But fortunately one of my son's was handy to tell me how to do it!

....and yes it looks like a gorgeous plane!

I recall watching a program on the restoration of a 109(g) could be wrong on exact model but the restorers were talking about the DB and said to be very careful with the crank as they cant be reproduced.

Not sure why that is they never said and I would think with todays tech a 1940's crank would be no problem.

One of those things that make you wonder...... never found out if it's true or the reason why they cant be made today.

The was an episode from Wings of the Luftwaffe from the early 90's.

The 109 they showed was a G-6 base (probably a Spanish Ha-1112 from the Battle of Britain movie) but with a facsimile 109E cowling, spinner, clipped wing tips, horizontal tail struts, and dummy cannon barrels in the wings. The plane is the one on display at the Seattle Museum of Flight. (http://img.groundspeak.com/waymarking/large/4940bded-564e-449b-9b44-d9da2acf14ee.jpg) Not sure is there is an actual DB 601 in there, but I doubt it given how hacked together the rest of the plane is.

The comment regarding the engine crank of the DB engines was made made by a tech at a museum in the U.K. - probably Duxford.

I’m 99% certain with today’s technology with CNC machines and digital programming making a crank is possible. It’s probably they want to avoid the cost and doing the R&D to make it.

If a full set of DB605 blue prints still exist, it's only money to get several built and running. Though the current crop of gazillionairs don't seem interested in WW2 aircraft like they once were. If they don't, there are DB605 sitting around Europe in different states of decay.

That is true bustr. I think if you can build some new world war two planes and make airshows it would be great. But then again ww2 warbird lovers have either died and the ones alive are getting old. The new generation has no interest in stuff like this.

Yes, I suppose those of us who grew up the children of WW2 vets are relatively short timers, but hopefully there will remain enough interest in the old warbirds to keep examples going.  I know outfits like the Collings Foundation and Commemorative Airforce are actively pursuing restoring and flying WW2 warbirds......but of course there needs to be enough interest from the public to be willing to contribute to upkeep.

I've watched that video 100 times now. It never gets old. The sound of that engine howling as it flies by.... wow.

That howling is indeed amazing. No other like it because of the fluid coupled supercharger.

sorry for the late reply but no it wasnt that vid.It ws about the restoration of a 109 done at duxford IIRC. I looked for the vid but gave up.Still made me wonder why it would be so difficult ti make a new crank.

Yes and you feel the engine as much as you hear it, if it is low and close. Impressed me more than any other WWII engine I have been around.
