Title: "Cry Havoc!" SnapShot Results
Post by: Flossy on August 12, 2002, 03:15:19 PM
Thanks to all who participated in yesterday's SnapShot!  Unfortunately, the first frame was a bit of a disaster for the Allies, whose A20s were soon slaughtered by the C205s!  Meanwhile, daddog, the SnapShot designer, witnessed the carnage and suggested some changes for the second frame.... although better, he has made more changes to it which should improve the gameplay whenever it is run in the future.  :D

Anyway, on to the results.  The Allies put up a good fight, but in the end the Axis beat them by 785 points to 240!  Well done, Axis!

OK, the details of the two frames are here:

Look forward to the next one!  :)

Glad to hear this setup is being revised before it is run again.
Not whining but this was a horrible setup and using Bostons' in the 2nd frame instead of the A20's was of no help as the gunner position has even less flexibilty than that of the A20 and that ain't saying much.
It was a turkey shoot no matter how you look at it.
With a few modifications it could still be a fun event for all , imho.

Yeah.... you can see how it looks now here:  http://events.simladder.com/snapshot.php?snapshot_id=26
I think that will work much better.  :)

Seems I got credit for killing a 205, though I do not remember shooting any 205s - certainly not shooting any down.  Wierd.

Selector, a20 was shot dwn like duck in first frame;) Error in scenario desighn
Flossy decide to change planes and give allies bostons formation and cover /p47/ . And thas was correct choice.

In secound frame 308th guys slaught covered fighters and live bombers for rest of axis forces. Whichone was slaughtered  too;)

IMHO in Frame 2 of any event everyone should switch sides :)  I feel I could have bombed those ships (of course since I saw how from the defenders point of view).

If you want to switch sides between frames, that's fine;  however, it is not enforced because not everybody wants to.... also the sides would still need to be of the correct proportions to each other, and as this has now been made a 70/30 setup, it wouldn't work if everyone changed sides.  :)

i dont card about there being escorts but surly for this scenario they should have been p40s..
also we should have been told there were gonna be p47s after all they knew we had 205 s  heheh:)

Yes, daddog did acknowledge this and has since changed possible escorts to P40s in the revised write-up.  Also, I believe I announced the change of planes for the Allies in the teal text just after the decision was made....  :D

I don't know. Allies got slaughtered in frame 1, but it seemed to be because of a few reasons:

1) Spread out bombers meant easy 1-1 pickings for the Axis.

2) High altitude of main flight meant Axis could get underneath making gun position ineffective.

3) Slow speed trying to get people to catch up.

I'm still wondering what a low-alt path for the A-20s in a massed formation (maybe run north slow to form up, then turn straight in and hit the burners) would have done...

Maybe next time this is run, you can offer to be Allies CO and find out!  :D  ;)

The Allied 2nd run in the Bostons Might have done well if we had spotted fleet. We flew E-W "Just" North of the port. While I could see the Port I somehow missed the fleet. I turned North away from port thinking fleet may be further out. After a While I turned back to the port and there it was. 2 mile off the Port.

Those fleets of little boats are Real hard to spot, and I think CM's should give the Allied CO a hint as to their location. I think if we had to have seen them on 1st run in 4-5 groups mabye more would have dropped, but none would survive egress.

LOL!  I thought "just north of P76" was pretty accurate, other than me somehow making myself visible in CMEye mode and pointing at the fleet!  :D  How much more of a hint can we give?  :p

Oh, the initial plan was fine, I just think that rather than changing the setup it would have been interesting to analyze what happened and see if an alternative plan might have had a chance. Unfortunately I had to run off before the second run.

I've now participated in 2 snapshots, and CO'ed in one of them ;-)

Yeah, see what you mean.  I must admit, this type of mission - flying straight to a target - seems to be a trait of AH...  :)  I always favoured a more roundabout route, taking longer to arrive at a target - and making the other side work a bit more to find us!  :D

I think your right flossy, that does seem to be a trait in AH flying straight to target. A couple of the Ss you have to because of time considerations, but many you don't. Two Ss a long time ago I actually was the frame C.O. Both times I took the long route hoping to strike the target without harassment, then rtb with the focus on dealing with the attackers. Alas both times I was caught prior to the target and pretty much wiped out. Hence I prefer to write them than lead them. ;)  No reason you can't take a round the barn approach to a target.

I have heard of players suggesting multiple targets, but the inherent problem with this is the possibility of players not having any action due to the fact that the target they attacked was not or did not have a CAP. Many ways this can happen, but one simple example is if there are two targets, two attack groups, and two defending groups. Quite often one attack group will reach a target prior to the second attack group. If that happens more often than not both CAP groups converge on the first attack group, slaughters it and the second attack group drops and scoots home without firing a shot. I have seen this happen many times with different variants of this set of circumstances. Players not having any action will "kill" a Snapshot (or any event for that matter) quicker than any other misfortune. Even over a poor connect.

I did change the write up, added P-40's for escorts and increased the percents for the Allies. Sorry for the slaughter the first frame.  I did not suggest P-47's the second frame, not sure who did. I thought I said P-40's, but maybe it was a typo. In any case we will do better next time. :) Thanks for all the feed back. We do listen to players.

Oops must have been me then.... I probably thought you said P-47s, and not being any kind of fighter pilot I was too dumb to know any difference - they are just numbers to me!  :D  My apologies, if this is the case...  :o

So thats what happened to my plane.  Friendly effin fire.  I''ll get you for that!  I thought it was odd that an a-20 turret was able to kill me so quickly.   :D
