Title: How are the numbers?
Post by: Prayer on March 08, 2023, 09:03:58 AM
Looks like I am on the way back. Just put together my first build since 2010. I started AH in 03 or 04, I can’t believe it’s been that long. 2080ti (equal to a 3070) and a 5800x for about 900 bucks not including monitor. For the heck of it I seen a x52 and rudder pedals on Facebook market for 100 bucks, made a offer and won. Couldn’t imagine this kind of price even in 2010.

I’ve checked the boards from time to time through the years. How are the numbers looking? Looking forward to getting up and seeing some older names. The rust will be thick.

Oculus quest 2 is kind of on the way…daughter requested one for her birthday on the 22nd  :pray :joystick:

Depending on day and time, from 10 to 130-140 at max. Right now, there are 31 pilots in the MA, of which about half are active

Welcome back, Prayer!   You are in for a real treat with that system!

Numbers are comfortably 100+ prime time weeknights; Friday with FSO going on it's usually twice that.   We are seeing more and more posts like yours here - vets coming back after years away.   Last night I saw a bunch of new handles I didn't recognize.

 :salute

I recognize both your names. Thank you.  Is AH training area still a thing? Lol back in 03 I remember doing countless and probably pointless hammerhead loops through those hangers. Had a few good trainers as well that I ended up talking and flying with for years. Nostalgic memory’s, I guess that’s part of what brings you back.

Thinking of coming back.....again. The problem is I got old and cant play much at night so its pretty much CDT from 1300 to 1700 hrs American time. Last time there were such low numbers I just went <poof>.

Now I see the maps are smaller, which is smart. They should have gone further and made it two sides instead of three. I think making it such a GV game was a mistake but he just gave what the players wanted so fair enough. 100 on at one time = 33 each side, if balanced which it never is, and at least 1/2 on the ground in GV's or MIA somehow. So what were the odds of finding a good air fight? Pretty low last time I played.

WW2OL has really crashed too. Both in numbers and terrible side balancing. Most air fights during the time I have played usually have at least a 3 on 1 LW edge, and usually more, which tho has made me a pretty fair fighter pilot often leaves me nothing to show for it so Im back looking for a WW2 flight game again.

One question I have is that I bought a VKB Gladiator set up, which is terrific, and I cant remember if Aces High allows direct mapping of your controller buttons to the game or do you have to assign keys from your keyboard and then assign the keys to your stick software?

Thanks for any answers and i hope all are well. Boy the times we used to have were glorious.  :salute

Same… 12 for me and it’s almost a new game. All the bases, towns and strats are all way different. BB’s were a pipe freak when I left the game first. It has its quirks but so does any old fart like myself!

You can direct map your stick in AH. Go to clipboard/options/controllers/map controllers. Select the controller you want to map at the top. It'll have all the axii and buttons for it listed. As you press a button it'll turn green on the list. Double click on it. A dialog box will appear with all the commands. Select one. Click OK.

You can also map parts of the axis travel (low/mid/high) with a command. They're at the bottom of the list for your stick.

There are two sets of maps. One for monitor and another for VR. If you're using VR you have to map while you're in VR. You'll find those files in your settings folder. The VR ones have a vr_  prefix.

Oh man, I'm getting the itch....not that itch but the itch to fly again.

I need to find my stick....not that stick but the one I have in a box somewhere in the storage space.

I guess I better go peruse the minimal rig requirements as this MacBook isn't gonna work. My wife's PC is from 2014 so I doubt that'll cut it.

If I can't find my stick, what's a decent stick that doesn't break the bank and only takes maybe 7 brain cells to configure and operate?

I just skimmed the forums and I'm shocked at how many of you are still alive....I mean active!

Damnit! I think I am getting that other itch too. I'll be back.

Xanax, check Facebook Market, Craigslist and eBay. I put my system together in about 3 months. Ignore the nay sayers about buying used parts. For the most part I have found everyone that I dealt with to be very up front and the parts look and play like they are basically brand new. My system out performs my brothers 3070 which he bought during Covid times and spent over 2600 a year and a half ago. Mine together 2080ti gpu,5800x cpu, x570 crosshair viii motherboard, 32 gb ram gskill cl18 4000, 360 aio arctic freeze, 2tb hynix ssd all for 950. Shop for deals, make offers, the worst is a no. A lot of people just get rid of the stick and other parts because it’s just sitting around not being used. On Facebook Market I found a x52 pro stick and throttle including pedals for 100 dollars. Sorry for the novel, deals make me excited  :pray :joystick:

My old 52 stick was cashed and found one on FB for $60 with the throttle. I traded the guy 1/4oz of weed for it and it it was almost new. Now I have some back up for repair!

If you knew how much weed I grew, he basically paid me lol.

Thanks, Prayer
I'll take a gander at all of those options. What I'll end up doing is making my wife think she needs a new computer as I'll blame any new hiccup i.e printer jams, slow websites, internet downtimes etc.on the pc itself. I'll spec out some parts and build a sweet running machine. I'll make a big stink about how technical and hard it is to build a machine to her new standard (my recommendations) so she'll feel bad and foot the bill. Easy peasy. She'll do something similar when she needs a new purse or pair of shoes and I'll get those for her birthday, xmas, Arbor Day or whatever it happens to be. It's devious and eye rolling on both sides but it's a system that works.

Now I gotta go gum up her printer a bit and schedule some internet downtimes. Damn computers!

OH and about the numbers. Well let's see...   1 and 3 still do not get along, so we sent 2 to keep them seperated. Other than that.... all seems pretty tranquil.

Basically, that is what I did Xanax. She still thinks everything with the monitor was a 300 dollar purchase.(slanting phone to catch sun glare currently so she can’t read this) Use the sun and save a little extra for Mother’s Day or her favorite dinner and spa, played right frees up a little time and no ack.

Still the same eh Shuffler. I remember when switching sides was a mortal sin and god forbid you changed squadrons.. black listed/cancelled to some. Those were good gaming years though, still my fondest.

Thanks for the replys. Im still considering coming back. These VKB controllers are The Bomb and I finally learned to fly fighters a little. WW2OL, while a fun flight game, has lost a lot of numbers and in the air the game has just skewed badly. So you can either pick from being on the LW side, far more numbers and far better organization, or the allied side, far to few numbers and no team work.

Neither appeal. The LW guys, tho yes they are good friends, HO once and then run because why fight when you have a 5 on 1 advantage? I dont blame them, they have been in their squads for many years so why expect them to switch because the allies have gone bust? I blame the game for having no fair balancing rules like Aces High has. When things are close to equal, or 1 on 1, the game is great. But it hasn't been "great" for awhile and Im starting to think it never will be again.

That sound great but unfortunately I cant play at night anymore due to medical issues. Im all downloaded and ready to go, as soon as I get the energy to map everything again.

This game always had a great selection of aircraft. One of its big perks. I'll probably map everything this week end and will be back in my Yak-3 again. After 20 years I finally learned how to merge and fly a fighter so I hope I dont embarrass myself.

Dude.  This game is all about teaching you not to worry about embarrassing yourself.

Good lord, I'd have quit decades ago if that bothered me.

Flew some sorties today and had a blast. My Yak-3 is still there along with the lovely skins.

This game has a few things going for it. #1 is what players that are on generally gravitate to where the action is. Especially with the small maps. #2 is that with the selection of airplanes and vehicles there is going to be some balance built into it. If your outnumbered just grab a better airplane.

In WW2OL Im so tired of always fighting 5 LW fighters I just log off. AH has far better comms and team play then Allied side of WW2OL. Anyway it felt good to be back flying the the Red Star and <S> to those we have lost. DR7 and Wasp most of all. Wasp was my friend and we meandered a lot of days just flying lazy sorties off of CV's together. He is missed.
