Hitech,
Below are two screen shots of an 8cumulus cloud layer at .500 covering an area at 12:00 noon, gamma is at 1.5. With shadows disabled the light as about right for 12:00, while with shadows enabled it is no different than being in that spot at 6:00am. Is there any chance you can change the global default darkness setting so shadows from clouds on the terrain at 12:00 are about 3\4 lighter?
With gamma at 1.0, it's pitch dark under those clouds.

I would be happy with shadows on and I didn't get continuous screen flash.
