Title: World War II veteran pilot takes to the skies of Aces High
Post by: capmedic on September 30, 2012, 03:52:07 PM
Hello everyone,

Although I have not got to play much myself here lately due to personal issues, my squadron and I (365th Hellhawks) were invited to the actual 365th FBG (the real guys) reunion this past week in Pigeon Forge, TN. Not only did we get to meet and learn from several veterans of the actual 365th FBG, see actual P47s take to the skies, and overall increase our appreciation of their service and sacrifice, we also got a real treat. Ralph Kling, a decorated WWII veteran, sat down with myself, HGDan, Heeler, RAK and JoeCrow and made a flawless (Stick, throttle and rudder pedals, not an auto) take off and flight in the skies of the Main arena. For those of you who were on, this was right before the map reset yesterday afternoon. I caught it, as well as the takeoff and landing of the real p47s, on my phone. The video of the real 47s is not all that great, as my phone is a piece of...well, you know. But it did a fine job capturing this video.

Also, here is Mr. Kling's story, in his own words (I did not do this interview)
http://vimeo.com/18317379 (http://vimeo.com/18317379)

For all of the rest of ya'll, I do apologize for my absence from Aces High, and look forward to flying with you again soon.

Note: There is an AH film of Mr. Kling's flight, however, it is on RAK's machine and I will upload it when he gets home and emails it to me.

Which variant of 47 did he fly?  Did he choose that same model in AH?  Since we don't have to worry about complex engine management, I'm curious if he commented on that... :headscratch:

Excellent. I'm curious as to what he thought of the feel of his bird (Yeah, I know, we have no Turbulence etc) - did he say anything about it?

LMAO  :rock  What a character!!!  My jaws locked in laughter  :D as he buzzes the airfield, he comments, cool as a cucumber, "I would have caught hell for that one."  That I translated into real life, that there were more stunts performed that didn't quite make it to the history books, but made it to the officer's club, complete with a full description of the looks on the faces of the razzed ground crew.

God, I love these guys.  I bet almost as much as God does.

God Bless Them All

:airplane: Great thread Cap, been missing you in my missions...hurry back...still waiting on phone call so you and I and climber can have lunch at "Mickies". Would love to have been with you talking to Mr. King. When players in Aces High see and hear from the old heads, it certainly adds to the respect we all have for those brave young men in the skies over Europe during 1942 to 1945.

Absolutely fantastic.

I would like to suggest that we have a voluntary fund that would pay the subscription of any WW2 veteran that would like to join us in this game we all love.

I volunteer $5 per month ad infinitum if Hitech could see his way to make this happen.  Anyone else with me?  Dale, please ?

This is fantastic.

Before seeing this, I'd lost all hope of having authentic ww2 pilots flying the skies of aces high.  I used to be in a squad with a fella who claims 14 aerial victories in a Wildcat along with a bunch of medals.  Unfortunately nobody can find any record of this guy or his achievements.

Over.

:aok :aok :aok :salute very cool, in  my job I have met a b17 bombadier, and a pony pilot.  These guys are so cool to talk to, but they are getting few and far between :(

When ever you get a chance to visit a veteran, be sure to ask a few questions and then be quiet and them talk.  That is all I had to do with both of my grandfathers regarding WWII.  My mother's dad was a pilot in the PTO (see my sig line). My father's dad was a was a courier [jeep jockey] in an arty unit in the ETO, he loved to tell stories of the "dumb Major who almost got me killed ordering me to take a short cuts through unsecured areas".  They appreciated me asking them questions, but there is a line that should not be crossed by those of us who were not there.  If the information or experience is offered then listen up and burn it in to your memory and get it written down.  One specific example of this is my good friend's grandfather was in the 3rd wave on Omaha beach, he was an engineer.  Curt wanted to show him my M1 Garand and see what he did and said.  Upon unsheathing it from the sock his eyes got wide and a huge smile appeared across his face.  He spoke with affection of the rifle.  We heard how he loved the 1903 Springfield in basic training and hated getting these "damned M1's covered in grease" when waiting in line to board a ship for the UK.  They cleaned them all up and learned the basics from the deck of the passenger ship, then fired them in drills once they got to England, etc etc.  The very next thing he said was "It kept me alive while I was in a foxhole with a dead German who was shaking like he was trying to dance out of the foxhole".  Then he back up and said he didnt think it would fire after dragging it through all that sand, but it did.  His grandpa went on for another 10-12 minutes just talking about things and experiences of that day.  His story is much like what we've already seen and read about: lost gear in water, didnt know anyone around him, didnt know where to go, lots of dead and wounded, unbelievable noise, scared senseless, etc.  My friend was amazed that he spoke of anything because all ever told any of the kids or grand kids was that he built bridges or moved stuff out of roadways.

One of the coolest things I have in my possession is a tape that my grandpa (pilot) made for me telling me an over-view of his experiences in WWII.  Hearing the details of his crash, the "ack-ack", the naval fleets, the heat and humidity, flying off course-getting lost-landing on 2 engines, etc, etc.  I hear is voice today and I am still amazed.  Oh... and btw... I lost him 10 years ago today.   :salute

I disagree.....yes most of the MA are not very good fighters....but there are some killers that are great at dog fighting, these guys will push you....and are far better at dog fighting then most ww2 sticks....because of the time they have simulating dog fighting.....again though I realize that we don't have to worry about dieing(well some of us dont the ones that do....certainly don't push themselves or their planes)

I am not taking anything from the pilots that did it for real....I respect them greatly.....

this game will teach you how to fly and fight....I know....... I never flew a plane in my life before.....I jumped into a Decathlon and flew it like I was doing it for years quite easily......the guy that took me up, was shocked that I never flew a plane.....

I think someone needs reading comprehension.....

sorry that word is probably a bit to big for ya.......

to make it simple so your feeble little mind can understand.....

a person who has 1000's of simulated combat hours in a game such as this that replicates a planes abilities.....now I am talking about really engaging the nme and actually fighting (not that you would know about that)

will beat someone dogfighting that only has a real world experience.....IE a WW2 pilot that does not have 1000's of hours.... had to worry about real bullets and real death...... they did not (for the most part) push their plane to the maximum and beyond.....they did not have the luxury of having unlimited lives....

em I going to fast?

no where did I compare myself to a WW2 pilot I was talking about "dogfighting" only..... dogfighting 2 WW2 planes against each other.....

simple really...... but I can understand someone such as yourself with the mind of a 2 year old how you can misconstrue what I said...oh damn another word to big for ya.

I am sorry I think you are flat wrong. There are variables that we do not have in this game.

don't be sorry that was at least a decent response that can be discussed without insults.

 I could be wrong..... I am not perfect......but I don't believe I am wrong....

I do know this....I had no problem flying an aerobatic plane and doing what I do in AH, in it.... with never before being in a plane........except my body was not used to it, so I got vertigo.....I also know that a few times up it would get used to it.....People try to say AH wont teach you how to fly...that is wrong...... I know first hand.

the only difference I found was the rudder peddles were much stiffer and the stick did not self center...of course this was not a WW2 bird......but a modern day aerobatic plane.

and no I am not taking anything from what WW2 pilots did,or comparing what we do in AH to them.... if you(not YOU but anyone) think I am..... well you are wrong.....I have huge respect for the pilots of WW2....on all sides.....hell doing my first FSO...I just about started crying thinking about what those guys had to face.....

I think you would piss your pants with real g-forces and bullets, comparing yourself to a real wwii pilot based on your mediocre skills in a video game is well, so you. INk thinks this game makes him a pilot...  :lol

ummm I have no doubt I can fly a plane....been there done that... :aok

personally I don't give two squats what you think....you are a puny little tart that would run to the cops at the first sign of trouble......you deserve as much respect as pond scum......no wonder why you got kicked from your own squad. :rofl

Wow you look really cool at the dinner table with your sweaty looking thuggery. I bet you smell as good as you look, try on a shirt sometime, will keep your lard ridden moobs warm. Your parents must be so proud of you and your cartoon piloting skills, I would spank your little bottom and make you wear clothes at the dinner table, but parenting is a dying art, I know because I have kids your age and they have enough sense to differentiate between being a total hackjob in a cartoon game and real life combat.  :lol

While this is a good argument. It really doesn't belong in this thread. Start a thread on the subject. There is some merit in the idea that flying AH a lot might help you fly the real thing. I don't know because I was a pilot before I was in AH. The funny thing is that I've done stuff in reality now partly after trying it in AH. I haven't managed to fly through a hangar yet! :airplane:

But this thread is really about the veteran flying his old steed virtually. I have never met a WW2 pilot that I know of. To me WW2 is impossibly far away but to those guys it must seem like yesterday sometimes.

never said they were not proven fighter pilots..... obviously they are.....what I said was they would lose in AH to a AH stick that has thousands of hours practicing Fighting....they do not have thousands of hours practicing(not even close).....they have very limited time practicing.....and the time they spent was not pushing the plane beyond its limits....

that is not an insult to what they did or diminish the sacrifices they made

that is not comparing what they did to what we do.... in any way shape or form...... just because that tard twitchy is saying that does not make it so.

a wonderful thread get turned into a mudsling fest by idiots

you are right..... sorry I answered a question someone asked.

I bow out and  :salute the sticks of WW2 and all the sacrifices they made.

that explains it for me then.  :salute
obviously that is so, these oldies but goodies wouldn't even know how to use the hat-switch for viewing.  :D
i wouldn't even think kim dotcom being the #1 COD player for some time would last a day in a firefight at kabul. (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10838484)  :lol :lol

INK, everyone, please refrain from flaming in this topic. I did not post the vid for you to moan and whine. These guys deserve a HELL of a lot of respect, because without them, we would not be playing AH. We would be playing some German game. Have some respect and take it elsewhere. I am going to PM hitech and see if he can delete/move all the infighting, and then lock and sticky the topic.

Funny they were at Pigeon Forge....My old army buddies from Germany (83-85) had our reunion at Pigeon Forge in Sept. (I couldn't make it). Must be the military reunion capital...lol.
