Title: Factories
Post by: XxDaSTaRxx on September 27, 2013, 03:24:17 PM
Factories would be an awesome addition to AH2. Bomber factories produce bombers, and will take large amounts of bombs to take down. Fighter factories are harder to bring down, and stay down for 10 mins. Bombers will be down for 15 mins. Vehicle factories are easier to bring down, and are down for 20 mins. All the factories should be located near strats, like the HQ, and armed to the teeth with AA. That's all for now...

Interesting idea.  What would be your proposed consequence if they are taken down?  No fighter aircraft for the entire country if fighter factory is down?  I don't see that happening for sure, as that would suddenly become such a valuable target that countries would probably run continuous waves of bombers to keep it down.  I think something along this general line would be cool, but not sure exactly could be done short of stopping all flight for a whole category of aircraft, even if it was for a short duration.

you have factories in the strats now, do you know what the consequence of knocking any of them down is?

Arm the factories to the teeth with AA, so only some bombers can drop, and not be destroyed. Sort of like CV's. Fraggin AA always gets me.  :bhead

Now that is an idea I can get behind!  Make the fighter factory keep fighter hangars down longer and so on.  I just posted a wish in a separate thread for longer hangar down-times.  Now that would be cool.  But make the factories themselves stay down as long as the other factories, not the super short duration suggested by the OP.

-1 on the GV thing; they were the main focus of WWII, and are already comically easy to disable at individual bases.

Have you ever flown over the strats that we already have?  They ARE armed to the teeth!

Of course I have. But the AA never seems to get me... City AA is nearly not a problem, so...

Disabling all of the fighter hangers can be a tough job, considering you have to make multiple passes on the field. Disabling the factory would bring down the whole fighter category at all the fields. Same for bombers, etc. But... I'm still not sure how exactly this would balance, because disabling a WHOLE category of aircraft/vehicles is kind of OP... But I guess it would balance by the short disable time.  :headscratch:

I know I'm new but I've already heard a lot of the pure furballers on here complain about too much "pork" whatever the heck that is. The truth is that modern warfare is a complex series of events and requirements that can and did make national leaders wake up at night in cold sweats. When Hitler proposed to his war staff the notion of building Yamato-style superdreadnoughts his Generals asked him if a single giant battleship or several panzer divisions were more important to the war effort.

The addition of fatter, juicer and more vital ground targets can only enhance the game play and increase the realism. In order to sustain a war effort, all types of factories are needed and they are usually dispersed through-out the countryside in order to capitalize on the talents of local communities. Back when I flew in Warbirds, the designers over there were well aware of this and I often took a flight of glass nosed Mossies on high speed raids to take out isolated factories and enjoyed the thrill of running for home with a few salivating Dora nines hot on my tail. And what I'm talking about here is not placing enormous industrial centres out in the middle of nowhere; but placing smaller factories with road and convoys out, near ports and along railways that would encourage more bombing and interdiction missions. This will give the pure furballers more than enough golden opportunities to hunt bombers and mix it up with their "little friends" escorting while at the same time satisfying the fix of players like me who get their thrill at the moment of bomb drop when I can hear Billy Zane in my head shouting "that's it, that's it .... bombs away!"

I would also like to propose an additional dimension to the game that would add more thrill and realism. As we all know, back in the day there were no satellites looking down on us 24/7. This was the reason why Howard Hughes  developed his sleek and sexy XF-11. (love the contra-rotating props!) If HTC ever chooses to add such ground targets then I propose to leave them off the map until someone takes off from a friendly base on a dedicated reconnaissance mission. The cameras can be added to the load-out option on and it can be selected as a separate mission for perk points on the clipboard. Once the photos have been taken and the aircraft lands successfully then the location of these targets appear on the maps of the country who took the photos only. I think this would add yet another exciting dimension of realism to an already great MMOG.

Just my 2 cents.

@Blinder, porking is flying around killing hangars and ords when you have no intention of capturing the base those assets are on. it can be a useful tactic if you're trying to take a base and want to disable the ability of the enemy to defend well or counter attack from another nearby base.

@XxDaSTaRxx bombers rarely get knocked out by auto puffy ack whether it's at the strats or over cv groups. try taking a fast attack plane or dive bomber over some puffy see what happens.

having the factories work the way you're looking at would be bad for overall gameplay. it would shift the focus from taking bases to porking factories, not that it couldn't be the case now but, it would be worse if porking a factory completely prevented the use of anything. some of the old timers say air warrior had a system like that.  right now if you kill a factory, it increases downtimes but you still have to drop hangars and ords to prevent the use of anything at a base.

Thank you for the explanation and I agree. Damage caused should be proportional. Since the idea behind the game is to simulate the WWII experience, the maps are a micro representation of the world circa 1939-1945. Therefore a single bombing raid over Schweinfurt would not disrupt total national German production. Likewise, in the game it should reduce productivity but by no means shut it down completely. That is another reason why I would push for random placement of vital infrastructure elements with each new map and the need for photo reconnaissance missions to reveal them to the other players. By just having industrial assets at the main city area detracts from the overall realism. This game, like everything else in life, needs to grow and evolve based in experiences or risk dying out.

actually the existing strat/mega city system is a fairly recent change. we used to have a "zone" strat system where the factories were separated in different zones for each chess piece.

there was another change last august but it appears the info link to it doesn't work...  :lol you can do a search for "strats" in the general discussion area if you want some good laughs.
