to you all or figuring out how to turn the computer on!  My grandparents can barely manage that, much less post on a BBS, fly cartoon planes et.c.

Here's a question;  Who had to walk the farthest, climb the biggest hill (and in how many directions), traverse the deepest snowdrifts and with what kind of footwear to get to school, assuming school had been invented when you were younger?

p.s. any of you have an autographed picture of Jesus?

well clerick, I had to walk barefoot 100 miles to get to school up some very steep hills.  during the winter the snowdrifts were so high that we would walk on the fence post.  oh and it was up hill both ways.  yes that was during the last ice age when miami florida was both mountainous and cold.

I'll tellya one thing I remember vividly is a time when everyone owning a PC wasnt even a concept. And when the Internet, before the great Al Gore invented it, wasnt even an idea. I never even saw a PC until the early 80s when my buddy first bought one and had some pathetic golf game on it, the playing of which, felt like walking on the moon. We used to stay up for hours playing that game and guzzling beer.

My 1st day of High School the kids shut the school down with a Vietnam war protest. I remember the first time Star Trek aired. I was home sick from school when JFK got blowed up. I remember Jerry Kramers block Packers/Dallas 1967 in frozen Lambeau field for the championship. I went to Disney world Florida the first week it was open. I remember hating disco.

In my day if you smarted off at school you got beat. I mean beat! Then the cops might beat you and the old man certainly would.

And now in AH we are like wise old elephants leading the herd to better pastures. Beware the older guys. Be afraid, be very afraid.

No BS.  This is true.

I grew up in northern MN, near the Canadian border.  Growing up we didn't have running water in our house.  We had a hand pump in the kitchen, an outhouse, an out-building sauna (good Finns that we are/were) and a crank phone on a party line.

We took baths once a week when the sauna got heated (my dad and bothers only made enough wood in the fall for weekly saunas through the year).  Trips to the outhouse at -30F were a winter norm.

By the time I was about 10 we got indoor running water in the kitchen so as a teen I was able to wash my hair daily and after I moved away my mother finally got an indoor shower.

I had to walk 1/4 mile to the highway and stand there waiting for the bus in the winter at anywhere from +10 to -40F, often through a foot of snow or more.

My how things have changed.

Almost the same for me, 'cept I was in rural Missouri so it was a little warmer, and no Sauna, dang. We walked 1/4 mile down the muddy lane to a gravel road for the bus.

Two longs and short - for the phone, hehe.

The town I grew up in was Watertown, CT. It's telephone region was "CRestwood" so all number began with 27 (CR).

The next town over, Thomaston, was "ATwood" so all numbers began with 28 (AT).

So if someone asked you what your phone number was you would say ... "Crestwood 4-5555".

Also, if you were in the "Crestwood" region and wanted to dial another number in the "Crestwood" region you only had to dial 4-xxxx.

Most of us withing this age spread could probably relate to this ...

During the summer, I would get up and out the door at 7 am in the morning. Take off on my bike with my buds, and not have to be home until 5 pm. During that time, my mom never knew where I was and it was never a concern. Can't do that nowadays.

You just had to make sure that your arse was in the dinner chair for 5 pm tho ... else all hell broke loose ... go figure.

A Polaris Sno-Traveller.  My best friend across the highway got one when I was about 8.  It would only do about 8 mph but did we have a blast on that thing.  Of course, if we got stuck it took us all day to get it out.

No, but there was a creek back through the woods that would freeze over and certain years, if the freeze/snow cycles were right, you could skate for miles up and down the creek.

When we were kids all we did was run and play ball. I remember loving Sundays because it was about the only night I could watch some television. Back then "Wild Kingdom" was the first and only nature show on TV. If you were lucky enough to have a color TV, and found a good enough spot for the antennas, you could also watch "The Wonderful World of Disney" on Sunday night in true color. Then you really had the cat by the hinds parts.

You guys remember watching Flash Gordon?? And all those other great shows? Boy, TV was TV back then and there was none of the gratuitous violence and sex in it.

And you'd never see a fat kid back then cause we never had any of these games and gadgets. All we had was bats and balls.

Any AH players in High School now have also never had a cold winter. We haven't had a truly cold winter since the '80s. And money?? We had to work for it. Nobody gave it to us and I'll bet the rest of the older guys here have been working since about 12 or 13. Or even younger cause many of us started young with paper routes.

Ive actually gotten 911 calls from kids who would want their old man arrested cause he cracked them one for being a screwball.

Can you guys imagine us calling the Police, way back when, cause the old man cracked us one?:lol :lol

:rofl ... back when I was a kid, my town was pretty rural and my neighborhood was all dead-end roads and bordered a dairy farm ... so my Dad's whistle could carry for a long way.

When ya heard the whistle ... you knew your arse was grass ... I worked hard at not having to hear that whistle. Dad was a West Point grad so he had a militaristic way of handling things. If anyone here has graduated from the "Point" or had a father that was a grad ... you will know what I am talking about.

We also had one of those stupid bells attached to the side of the house by the front door ... that was my Mom's way of calling me.

Yeah ... the cop would of reamed our arse out and the held us so the 'Ol man could crack ya again.

Wild Kingdom ... loved the show ... hated the segway into the commercials tho ... bugged the crap out me.

"See how the mother lion protects her cubs ... well if you had Mutal of Omaha's home owners insurance, you can rest knowing that your "pride" will always have a safe place to live to" ... something like that.

Color TV ... yeah right. Only B&W for us and only 2 or 3 channels depending upon the weather.

My dad and I loved hockey and loved to watch the NY Rangers ... well to get that channel, the antenna had to be in the right spot. We had a pair of vise grips snapped onto the antenna pole so I could turn it, and when the signal was good ... dad would bang on the wall ... was fun doing that when it was 10 degrees or colder.

My dad was the guy everyone in the family / friends called when their TV wasn’t working, I used to go to the local Walgreen’s? Store with him while he used the machine to test the tubes ( remember those ) as a result we had a color TV pretty early on and being somewhat close to Chicago we had the channels man.

Oh and the other thing when the front porch light came on I had about two minutes to get my butt in the house an check in.  I have to say though once the folks knew that I was in the yard and it was a no school night I could stay out outside with the friends in the neighborhood.  Back then there was no regular garbage pickup so a lot of people burned what they could everyone had a fire pit or an old drum.  We’d stay out start a fire and then play flashlight tag or just bs by the fire.

Didn't have one of those, but we had a pair of the early model Artic Cats that followed it a few years later.  15 horsepower, would do maybe 20-25 mph on good going.  Dad kept one running for years just for pulling ice fishing houses on & off the lake.

When I was a young kid on the farm, one late afternoon we all heard the heavy rumbling of a big airplane growing louder and louder. The whole family ran outside to see a four-engined TWA Constellation flying over with gear and flaps out. My aunt was a flight attendant and had asked the pilot to buzz her sister's farm on the way to KC.

Yeah, those were the days.

Well ... if you were 40 then it must have been this one ...

1927-28 New York Rangers  vs Montreal Maroons

In 1994 ... it was Brian Leetch who brought the Rangers the Cup and he got the Conn Smythe Trophy too.

One of my friends, Skip Krake started his career with the Bruins , played
with Espisito I think , knows Orr , I think Skip was traded when Orr came in .
He played with Sather in Boston as well , then Edmonton when Sather coached , they are still good friends , thats why the Rangers are important to some of us Canucks .

Hey Widewing - how's it going? I've seen this B4 but always thought it fascinating:

http://discovermagazine.com/2006/may/fuzzy-math

In a group of 23 people, the odds are better than even that at least two of them will share a birthday.

Seems as if you'd need many more people before you'd find a shared birthday, doesn't it? But consider the reverse situation, in which nobody shares a birthday. Since all birth dates are equally likely, then the odds of picking 23 different ones out of 365 aren't that good—less than fifty-fifty. Among 200 people, there is a 99.9999999999999999999999999 percent chance that two birthdays will match! So why don't you meet more people who share your birthday? That's because a specific match is less likely than an arbitrary one. For any two people to share a birthday, any day will suffice; for someone to share your birthday, only one does.

Regards,

Optiker

Speaking of black and white TVs.....we got our first one in 1954.  I remember my Dad on the roof.  Our TV antenna was attatched to the chimney. We wanted to be able to watch a Cleveland Browns game and our antenna needed to be turned (anyone remember VHF and UHF?)  My job was to stand next to the window and watch the TV as my father turned the antenna.  When the picture came in for the station the game was on I was to yell at my father to let him know.

LOLOLOLOLOL   all I remember is  hearing the word "****" as my father whized by the window going down with the antenna cable in his hands.

Fortunately there were a lot of Hemlocks beneath him that cushioned his fall and he suffered only some minor bruises.  My 85 year old father and I still laugh until tears come from our eyes when we remember that.

Oh btw....we did get channel 8 in cleveland with his "antenna adjustment" and were able to see the Browns game.

I remember my dad trying to convince my brother and me that we had "color" tv by saying "see that guy he has a red shirt on" :)

I of course remember when there was NO tv like many of you in this thread and listening to the radio was the intertainment of the day.  Boston Blackie, Sky King, The Shadow, and Sgt Preston of the RCMP saying to his dog "thanks to you King this case is closed".

Man the memories flood in when reading some of these posts.

Growing up on Long Island in the 1950s and 60s, shows unique to New York City were great fun. Little kids all watched Ding Dong School with Miss Francis. We also had Soupy Sales and the Sandy Becker show. Afternoons included Popeye cartoons hosted by Captain Jack McCarthy, the Three Stooges hosted by Officer Joe Bolton and Laurel & Hardy hosted by Chuck McCann.

My favorite Saturday morning cartoon show was Crusader Rabbit; "run for the roundhouse Nellie, they'll never corner you there!"

My regards,

Widewing

Hi Mates

ET will remember, as well as some of the others.

I was a very lucky kid, I was in grammar (elementary school) during WWII at Pensacola, FL.  Dad was in charge of advanced air training (Capt) and took me flying in everything they had including PBY, PBM, SNJ, Stearman, SBD, Kingfisher, and some others.  What a blast.  Got me hooked on flying.

Anyway, we went home to Memphis in 1946.  Back then coke came in a bottle for a nickle, gay meant happy and fun, weed was something you dug up in the front yard.

Security at our house was the hook on the screen door, everyone left the keys in the cars in the driveways and on saturdays, we went to the movies that cost me a quarter.  15 cents to get in, a nickle each for popcorn and a coke.  Double feature with 10 cartoons, plus Buck Rogers serials.  Left my bike out front with no locks.  Summers were hot, how did we live with just the attic fan.  When the polio vaccine came out they gave it to us at school on a sugar cube.  No one got sick. No one sued the school board.

The family retired to the sunroom after dinner to listen to the radio shows mentioned above.  I recall our first TV we got in 1952.  Had about a 11 inch screen.  We used to watch the test pattern and then the static to see if we could see something else.  I got my first color TV when I was in the Army in 1964.  By the way, everyone served their country back then.  You did two years either after high school or after college.  Everybody was a veteran.  Did my time during the sixties over there, nobody ever spit on me though.

No problems with the Plege of Allegiance, hand over heart for the National Anthem, a little prayer before class in school.  Also, no problem with the principal giving you a little taste of a canoe paddle if you really screwed up.

Talk about memories coming back.  Now with 6 grand children, three children, one of whom, my son,  is a Major in the Army (Blackhawk driver), having done Afganistan and Iraq.  A Long time has past but I know I have been a very lucky person to have lived during the very best times in the USA.

Being disabled, if has been my pleasure to participate with all these young furballers since back in 1996 in Warbirds and coming over to AH with the beta.  Made some good friends up here.  Met a bunch of my squaddies in England, and we get together over there from time to time.  I fly with the Brits as we can get together in the afternoon.  I go to bed early these days.

Not much good in AH, but I do have a good time.  Hats off to all you young whippersnappers (does that mean something bad now, please don't call the ACLU).  Some of the things you say and do literally crack me up.  Keep it up.

Cheers and check six all the time.

Yep, was great stuff. In the 60's, the Captain Crunch (cereal) character was modeled on Captain Kangaroo, just like the Flintstones were modeled on the Honeymooners.

How about that moment when they slammed that "under God" into the Pledge, and even in your little child's mind, you first recognized political cynicism?

Ever notice how all these school shootings, and assorted problems, started after they chased God out of the place. Weve had some gang riots in our schools that are right out of "Escape from NewYork.

Im glad Im old enough to remember a better time. A time when kids were raised in the church and to obey Gods laws. Thats the problem with a lot of people today. They dont believe they will one day have to answer for what they do, and there aint going to be any slick lawyers around to answer for them.

The '60s were a simpler time to be a kid. A better time. We were raised to respect our elders thats for sure. And our parents were people who worked for everything and never complained. They were better then us, that WW-ll generation. They were a far stronger generation then we are.

Another difference between the 50s and 60s' now.

(Your Mother)  Get out of the house!  Play outside!  We played baseball basketball or football until it got to dark to see.  We snuck into ponds at night when sleeping out so we could do some night fishing!  Hunting nightcrawlers with a flashlight to find them.  Once you spotted them with the flashlight you had to remember where the nightcrawler was.  Reason if you left the light on him he would vanish into his hole.  So you'd spot. get light off the crawler and as quickly as you could from memory grab it!

Sleeping out?  LOL to todays generation that means in a Motel:aok  We'd get a group of guys with sleeping bags and just sleep in someones yard knowing full well we weren't going to sleep until we dropped.  Raid gardens or go fishing in a local bass pond was the norm for sleeping out.

Hey guys!  The Townsend Ave guys have challenged us to a baseball game tomorrow.  I said yes!  We are to meet them in the field next to Carls house.  Bring whatever you can find we'll need some bases.

(Baseball wrapped completely with electrical tape because the cover gave up three weeks ago, a few bats, some with nails in them to hold them together, and if you didn't have a glove it was ok we shared.)

Hi Storch

You were lucky, Rock Salt??  The guy we used to swipe watermelons from shot dried beans.  Talk about hurt!!

Think kids can run the 100 fast now with a football?  Should have seen us with a watermelon under each arm and beans flying everywhere!!

Great times, for sure.

I'm a little late on this one because I just woke up from my nap.  I remember Sarurday moening cliff hangar serials at the neighborhood movie theater.  (Yes, there once were neighborhood movie theaters.)

I also remember hearing Johnny Ray sing "That Lucky Old Sun" on AM radio.  (Yes, youngsters, there was a time when all pop music was on AM and hardly anyone heard of FM.)

I think both qualify me for the over 50 club and then some.  Now, time for another nap. :)

I'll be 60 in January 2008.

True story,  to renew my second class medical the FAA insisted that I get a stress test.  I'm still an active CFI.  So I'm at the last part of the test where the heart rate really takes a beating.  They got like a crash cart standing by incase I keel over with an oxengyn tank and two nurses, one para-medic and the Cardiologist with me on this treadmill doing like 4 miles an hour up a 15% grade.

I look over at the 39 yo cardiologist sitting in the corner and I realize that he is holding his chest, turning all sorts of  the color blue.  He hits the floor and all kinds of hell breaks lose in this tiny room.  Their pounding on his chest and shooting him full of all kinds of drugs.  Must be every doctor and nurse in this pratice is in this room.  Their getting ready to pull the sheet over this guys face when one of them realizes that I'm still on the treadmill running.

Here's a little nostalgia from the sixties:

Then came the 70's.  The women's rights movement takes hold.  Being a man is becomes politically incorrect.  Divorce rate goes through the ceiling.  Fathers are alienated from their families and it all starts going to ***** from there.

52 here.

Feel like an old fahrt reading all of these stories about the "good old days".  Yeah, all we did was play some form of sports, rode our bikes for miles, or played "army" until dark.  Hardly ever played indoors, even in the worst weather.  Every evening at 6:00 the emergency siren would go off in the town where I lived.  That was our signal to get home for dinner.  Was asleep within seconds of hitting the pillow and slept like a dead man through the night.

Well ... if you were 40 then it must have been this one ...

1927-28 New York Rangers  vs Montreal Maroons

In 1994 ... it was Brian Leetch who brought the Rangers the Cup and he got the Conn Smythe Trophy too.

Brian grew up in Cheshire, CT .. which is around 3 towns over from where I live and grew up ... so he wasn't Canadian.

Almost 49..... 9/23/60

Went to Cheshire High and then to North Haven High...Class of 78...Hated that danged BLIZZARD that year! Thank God for warm Pensacola.

As I stated earlier, I'm 52 but as I was reading the posts here, I just remembered this story.  Back when I was in my early thirties, my brother

Quite a few years ago now, I was playing Trivial Pursuit with my brother who is six years younger than I am.  I drew a question asking what year Alaska and Hawaii became states.  Being the "genius" that I am, I answered 1959.  My brother gets this look and then asks me "what year were you born?'  I said, 1956.  OMG, he says, when you were born this country had a whole different flag!  He still enjoys reminding me of this every so often.

Speaking of the flag being different... I too was born when there were only 48 stars on our flag! I was born in Hawaii pre-statehood and before they built a damn bridge to Ford Island... OT now, does anyone listen to music while playing AH? My favorite set of songs is the 'Best of Glen Miller.' Nothing like climbing to alt while hearing 'American Patrol...'

This thread reminded me of an an encounter I had with a nice librarian in January.  She wished me a happy new year. Instead of just returning the sentiment I got all conspiratorial and leaned over the counter. "I should tell you something..."
"What?"
"You know, if this keeps happening every year...we're all going to die."
" :huh"

It was great.

When first posting on this subject I was a young lad of 57.  I'm very close to 60 now.

Some things I find myself doing now.

Network TV. = turning it off.

New Casts = sensationalism instead of "Goodnight Chet, Goodnight Dave, and goodnight from NBC News."

When driving around during the Summer scanning to see if kids are playing baseball....anywhere in the neighborhood.

Sadly I find none.  Unless it's organized children aren't interested.  No creativity I guess.

Newspapers= canceled subscriptions.

Cable News= looking for cleavage  ;)

New Movies = Special effects with little or no substance or authenticity.

I Miss= John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Henry Fonda, Robert Mitchum and Charlton Heston great Actors.

I Miss = Katherine Hepburn, Yvonne DeCarlo, Maureen O'Hara,  also great Actors.

I Miss = AM radio from the 50s and 60s'.

Geez....the list gets longer....

Actually now that I think about it, none of us should even be alive.  No car seats to put the babies in, didn't wear seat belts and the cars weighed as much as light tanks.  No bike helmet and no knee pads, heck, usually in the summer, no shoes!  Played with chemisty sets that had poisons in them (I had one that had mercury in it), bought the kids wood burning sets (basically a kids version of a soldering iron), I even remember a rock and mineral sample kit I received one Christmas that had asbestos in it.  In the summer or on weekends we were out all day and into the night, my parents had a vague idea where we were (usually somewhere in the county).  So I survive all of that and it turns out it's hamburgers that's gonna kill me.   :O

Well, that is possible....I'm an old coot after all.   :lol  Or perhaps there was another player that had a variation of that name (Flossie).  I was near the end of a near 30 year teaching career when I started playing AH.  I'm the educational coordinator for a day service center for adults with developmental handicaps.  So, I work with social services (DHS...DDS...etc.) quite a bit.

Would that squad share my sociolinguistic identity? Would that squad join me naked in the sauna, dip into the frozen lake and roll in the snow - not to forget building a bareskinned human pyramid in the midst of a snowfall? Would that squad support me with business contacts that help me run my tiny business here in the middle of nowhere?

Hmmm .... could be fun ... I still don't feel old.

Some initial  suggested names:
* The Ripe Stuff
* The Expendables (per latest genre of post-popular action heroes: Stallone, Norris etc.)
* Project Daedalus (per Space Cowboys movie)
* The Space Cowboys
* Funeral Home Killing Machines

1954 here - a vintage year.  would like sauna.  would try rolling in snow.  naked piramid would not work for me - assuming we were all in the over 50 club and of both male and female sexes.  Of course Raquel is over 50, so I might be a bit hasty here.   :x :x  But, then again, so is Maggie Smith.  :bolt:

I am 52. I got my first Windows PC in August of 2000 for doing college work at home, but made sure it was built strong enough to play flight sims at a decent quality/frame rate. I immediately got all the Jane's games. But I quickly discovered Warbirds and Aces High. I don't play AH online very often, but I am currently subscribed. I hope to see AH continue to exist as it remains one of the best WW2 air combat simulators and had led the way into VR.

I said how old do you think I am, LOL, he said 65 to 70, too funny

I told him "I'm only 52"

Bet I  could look 35 if I would color my hair and shave this silver & grey beard and mustache off
