Title: Any mission requests?
Post by: bobtom on December 07, 2008, 07:30:45 PM
I have had a lot of spare time lately, and I was just wondering if anyone had any missions they wanted to be made. Since USranger, and soda72 have been busy lately, and do not have the time to make these. Just say the details and I will get right on it. If you want I can add a briefing or extra goodies like ranger. Thanks.

well i got a couple ideas for ya,

how about a massive pt on pt boat engagement? they could be racing to sink the enemy CV or destroy an enemy port while defending their own. so if you just run off to attack the enemy without trying to intercept those attacking yours you'll lose, capture the flag type scenario.

or a wave of Pt's attacking a port vs a small flight of fighter bombers trying to sink them, play either side. just be sure the Pt's outnumber the fighters by at least 2.5 or 3 to 1. put a CV with no escort nearby for fighter rearming.

or a patrol of 5 or 6 Pt's with fighter escorts out to sink a CV hiding amongst its fighter cover and escort ships? either operate a pt boat or a fighter attacking or defending the CV.

last but not least, a small flight of fighters (German or Russian) without ords defending a town that is being attacked by Pt's and lvt's. the Pt's concentrate on rocketing down the buildings and the lvt's land as many troops as they can. i wouldn't give the boats any fighter cover, it would get overwhelming to the defenders to easily.

any combination of the above scenarios would be fun.

sorry to be the bearer of bad news here flotsom

nothing in the ME allows for gv's or PT's. Only the aircraft are included with the mission editor.  :cry

One Hundred to One!
*source: Fork-Tailed Devil by Martin Caidin[/b] Chapter 20, Pg 270*

Port Moresby-1943:  Lt. William Sells on a test flight of his P-38 encounters a large attack force of Japanese Zeroes and Betty's nearing Milne bay. He manages to hold them off until the Aussie P-40's can get off the ground.  Sells was officially credited with 6 kills in this one fight, but you won't find his name listed posthumously on any Aces list.  Lt. Sells squadron affiliation is unclear due to damaged and missing records from that time period, but he was most likely with the 49th FG based nearby.

Mission numbers reduced for playability and AI constraints.  If the AI can be made to drop ordnance if damaged, then by all means up the number of bombers.

Japanese:
6 Betty's in Formation flight  (18 planes)  at 12k
10 Zeroes A6M5(?)  at 14k
Objective: Bomb port Moresby with at least 1/3rd of the Betty's

Allied:
1 P-38J  50% gas  Air start at 17k NW of Port Moresby
8 P-40E Ground start on base flashing if possible.
Objective: Disrupt the bomber attack at all costs

While the story itself is short, barely 4 pages, it recounts a tale of heroism that one rarely sees outside of movies.  Out of ammo, wounded and his plane badly damaged, Sells attempted to land and was given the Red light.  He started a wide left turn back to the pattern, when his plane fell off on a wing and hit the ground...

Who me? *looks around surprised*  Uhm is there a New Guinea or other map with similar shoreline available?

I suppose anything looking remotely like Papua.  the Japanese would be coming from the North East, Guadal Canal area I believe.

Here's a good site with maps, on the area during 1943-44.
http://www.olive-drab.com/od_history_ww2_ops_battles_1943newguinea.php (http://www.olive-drab.com/od_history_ww2_ops_battles_1943newguinea.php)

Here's another site with some great maps of that period and theater
http://www.kensmen.com/maproom.html (http://www.kensmen.com/maproom.html)

Quote
...Despite the Japanese defeat at Buna and the heavy losses in the continuing struggle for Guadalcanal, in January 1943 Japan still held the preponderant air, naval, and ground strength in the Southwest Pacific and retained the strategic initiative in New Guinea. With these advantages, they planned to strike again for Port Moresby, their target on the south coast of Papua.

I am not a map builder....yet.  :D If that's what you were getting at.

I mean what current map would you like. (Sorry that you had to go through all that research)

It says in the home page under downloads, and in Terrains.

Would like to see some fighter vs. bomber formations (17, 24, etc). Need practice in slashing and belly shot manauvers....especially against Lancs and B26s'  :O. Just a thought........

I have one with 262s vs b17s. I could change it to a plane of your choice.

PTO_1 is the one... A32 is Port Moresby

Likely Axis base would be A35 A49 and A50 in that order

You  will have to move the Task group by P34, further South.   Likely ingress route would be between the dar coverage P34 and A32, or a seaward/coastal route to avoid detection over land.

Could also sub the Betty's with D3A's and B5N's if you can get them in formations.

Hope that helps

Hey Bob, check PM's.

And thank you very much for your time and effort on this project.  It's a fitting tribute for a relatively unknown pilots actions during the war.

Ive got one but its nothing historic or anything. Just a 4 ship o 190A5' and 190D9's vs some spits and tempies. Its mostly for my personal practice. Also can the combat time be extended? I always seem to run out of time and get teleported to the final leg of the flight.
Thanx

Cool! well Im not sure how long. I guess about 10 min should be way good huh?
Also is there anyway that you can start flying in the combat area instead of taking off and all that?
You may have guessed I know nothing about making missions
Thanx

That's fine, most people don't know anything about making missions. At this point I don't think you can air spawn. Ranger or soda would know that. I should have your mission in a couple minutes.

P47's with bombs and rockets.

The AI will not dive bomb, as in the Raiders of the Rising Sun mission. I wish it would, but It would be hard to model I think...
Title: Re: Any mission requests?
Post by: jimson on December 12, 2008, 07:09:34 PM
Well, I was thinking more along the lines of dive bombing practice for the player, bomb and rocket loadout and no T/A divebomb and rocket sight.

I wouldn't even care if there were any AI aircraft, just a real enemy base with flak and buildings that register damage.

I'd like to see some good TNB missions down on the deck.  Maybe have the player defend a base from an invasion using A6M5B's, Niki's, and/or F6F5's.  There would be no warp necessary for the player, if they were defending the base they were launching from.
I know there is a mission with the A6M5B's and F6F5's, but you have to warp to the battle, and then fight your way down from high alt.  I'm just looking for some low-level practice.  Hope you can fit it in somewhere if possible.
I would leave the invading planes to your descretion, but something that could mix it up with the above mentioned planes.

There is one that I would really like to see, assuming I could ever get the missions to work other then default. Is the one that I saw while ago on the show Dogfights - I can't remember the name of it, something around the K4 range or something (the mountians looked like pymarids)  Basically the germans launched huge air offensive (if I recall, it was 109 and 190s) and bunch of P47s and P51Ds (  :rock ) went into the gridiron.

The 633 Sqdn run up the fjords from the movie?

Current SEA map has the perfect fjord and the target could be the ammo factory, troop base or the airbase A66 at the end of it.

Put in a few 109's  and line the fjord with some puffy, or light AAA and you're all set.

Wow bumped!

I wouldnt mind an awesome CBI mission. Maybe some spits escorting C-47's vs. zekes (since we have no oscars) and Ki-67's.
British vs. Japanese scenarios are few in this game.

Very much so the 'Forgotten War'.

Do some research into the Southwest Pacific area early stages of the war in the Pacific.

The Java area, Sumatra, Singapore, Borneo and so on...the RAF was involved in these actions.

Here is a good referance read for the "PTO" Pacific Theater of Operations

http://books.google.com/books?id=ChyilRml0hcC&pg=PA213&lpg=PA213&dq=RAF+units+in+the+Pacific&source=bl&ots=bJm9zYvs2l&sig=EFgEq0K6ZsVO2BsjXYxQOLGzsrU&hl=en&ei=wfamSrzoMpGMtge6moWeCA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2#v=onepage&q=&f=false

It covers a lot of what I was refering to...

Yea, USRanger, mostly Burma.

BrownBaron: That's why I stated Zekes inSTEAD of Oscars. The Japanese Army fought the RAF and later, the USAAF in the CBI using Ki-43 'Oscars' and Ki-44 'Tojos'. In fact the the Ki-43 was Japan's most significant aircraft in terms of number of planes built, yet we lack it in-game.

Spitfire V's fought until early '44 when Spitfire VIII's arrived in-theatre.

One of the more famous engagements of RAF vs. JAAF aircraft happened from 6th-23rd of Feb. '44 when the Japanese sent hundreds of fighters and soldiers to attack General Slim's 14th army in Arakan, around the India-Burma border as a final attempt to get to India. The British were besieged but C-47 Dakotas (and C-46 Commandos) managed to drop them ammo, food and supplies thanks to the protection of Spitfire pilots.

A Forgotten War indeed  :salute

How about developing some missions that are specific to tank warfare?

Todate we don't have any.

Perhaps one or more of these:

Desert FOX: The battle of North Africa

Operation Barbarossa - Eastern Front Combat History 1941-45

Stalingrad - von Paulus 6th Army encircled and destroyed

Operation Citadele (Kursk) July 1943

The Battle of Monte Cassino

The Battle of the Bulge

There's a Burma map that was used previously on AH1, located on:

click on AH1 maps & scroll down to R Burma, perhaps u'd be able to convert it for AH2 usage.  May be worth a try.  :salute
