Title: Looking for recommendations on a USB headset.
Post by: Beefcake on February 12, 2019, 05:11:34 PM
So either my headset mic or my 3.5mm jack on my laptop has died and I was looking for recommendations on a USB headset. I can go upto about $100 and would appreciate any wisdom you can give me.

Have a look at the HyperX pro gaming headset. It costs 74 bucks on Amazon. I have the older model and have not had any issues with it. I use it nearly everyday for a few hours.

I've been using the Turtle Beach Earforce Z60 for about 5 years without any problems.  I think I paid about $85.00.  I don't know if it is a current model nor the price, but check with Turtle Beach.

I have the Hyperx Cloud USB headset.  It replaced my old Logitech 930 head set.  Wish I had gotten the Cloud sooner, it's been great for long gaming sessions and works with consoles and PC.

I've heard good things about the Clouds.

I saw that the Logitech G933 was on sale for $109 on Amazon. I have these and they are great. Long battery life and the wireless is fantastic. Flip up mic for muting purposes.

I have a turtle beach P11 and I hate it. It comes default that when you talk you can hear yourself in the headset with no way to disable that feature on this particular model without flipping the switch on it to mute the mic totally.

I have offered several different models over the years...yet others would go off and buy some usb headphone/mic set and then be upset with it...

for the past 9 years I've been using a TekNmotion Yapster YB-100A headset, really the best dang headset I've bought with a mic, to play games...

I have other headset's that cost nearly $300 dollars, but no mic on them....but with my hearing loss, I can't tell much difference between a less than $30 dollar set or a $ 300 dollar set...they all sound nearly the same to me these days...

Good Luck in finding what works for you.....all my headsets over the years have lasted at least 10 years or longer...and I will never buy a USB headset/mic....

Beefcake, I just noticed you haven't actually tested your mic or jack. Wouldn't that be the first thing to do before dumping the current gear?

First, how many audio jacks do you have in your laptop? If two, it's easy to test the microphone jack by plugging another microphone into it. Or even the headphones! Yes, the headphones can be plugged to a microphone jack and they'll really pick up sound. They're not very sensitive so you'd have to shout but for testing purposes they can tell if the jack is faulty or not. If only one jack, a Y cable splitting the mic and phone lines would be required for testing.

Second, since you're talking about a laptop, is there a built-in microphone somewhere? Most laptops have one, but not all. It's often beside the camera but it can as well be somewhere near the hinges, a small hole. If you have one, does it work?

Third, have you checked your Control Panel for a Realtek Audio tool? That's the most common brand for onboard audio although there may be others. Anyhow, the audio tool should tell you quite a lot. The Windows Sound Device tool also can be quite informative. What I'm trying to ask, have you checked that the microphone is active? With Windows10 you may end up getting a silent update which can disable some features! Check your audio settings and update the drivers if needed!

The Z60 doesn't work that way.  It has two volume controls, one for the game and another for TeamSpeak or other outside voice programs.

To answer I'm recovering in rehab from my stroke so testing isn't easy. I'm waiting for family to bring me an old mic to test. Also the laptop has an on board mic but my roommate has the TV up all the time so it drowns out my weak voice.

Hope you get well soon.  :salute

For the built-in mic I meant just testing it to check if there's something wrong with the motherboard sound system. As you may already know, the built-in mic uses the same sound circuit as the plugged-in one, the latter usually disabling the former when plugged in. Thus you can even record the TV of your roommate for testing purposes without stressing your lungs, either by using the Windows Sound Recorder or even tuning AH to yourself which should play back any sound the pickup can hear.

The Logitech G533 is legit the best headset I've ever had in terms of performance and comfort. I'm not an audiophile but I do enjoy good sound and these do the trick for me. Wireless is a huge plus for me also. No annoying wires going across my lap or getting hung on things. And it's under $100  :aok
