The original short story as published in King's novella collection, Different Seasons, was entitled "Hope Springs Eternal (Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption)". As great as the movie was, King's writing was better. His work RARELY translates well to the screen. This was an exception. This collection, released in 1982, was easily King's high water mark. It also included the story "The Body" which would be made into "Stand By Me". It too was an exception to King's poor adaptation to film. Although, both of these have the bonus of FANTASTIC performances by incredibly gifted actors. Which may be why most Stephen King movies suck. I read once that he preferred the clean slate of unknown actors, rather than established ones. Although... neither Emilio Estevez or AC/DC could save Maximum Overdrive...
