I was wondering the same thing.

I was astonished with its performance. Turn characteristics were splendid, almost the same as the Ki-84 in a horizontal turn.

 :rofl

Not in here!

So what happened to strawbridge?

He survived the war and died an old man having never married his Mustang’s namesake.   :salute

Looks like Oliver E. Strawbridge made it home ok.  He died in 1987 at age 66 in Illinois.

Oh, the story has a twist! While it was Strawbridge's plane, another pilot was flying it.  I just read a post by Strawbridge's granddaughter. Lt. Sam McMillan was flying Evalina the day it was captured.  He made it home also.

See this link for info by his granddaughter.

“On January 16th, 1945, 2nd Lt. Sam McMillan was flying P-51, ‘Evalina’ (the Mustang was actually the mount of 1st Lt. Oliver Strawbridge, ‘Evalina’ being his girlfriend) when he was hit by AA Flak and landed at the Japanese-held Suchin airfield in China. McMillan became a POW and his Mustang was rapidly seized by Japanese troops.

“Both Strawbridge and McMillan survived the war and lived to old age. Although Strawbridge never did marry Evalina…”

Complete garbage I'd wager.  They never had "good" fuel to begin with though.

Remember that the planes of WW2 had compression ratios of around 6:1.

Proper ignition timing and a rich mixture can stave off detonation at some pretty high boost pressures.
