Title: Need a Name.
Post by: hitech on January 20, 2003, 05:08:22 PM: As we started working on the mission theater, we realized we were making a completely new game from that which is Aces High today.

This lead us to starting work on AcesHigh II. Which will be 2 games in one.

1st.
AcesHigh Classic, which will be the Main areana as we know today, only with updated Graphic Eng,and other sim items, but the game play will be similar to what it is today.

2nd. The Mission theater. We need a better name for this. AcesHigh "Fill In the blank"

This game will will be primarly geared toward role playing.
The outline of the game play items are as follows.
1. You will enter the game as a cadet and have to pass some training sorties to get your wings.
2. Once you get your wings you will be a 2nd LT with 500 carer points.
3. If you die you will loose aprox 100 career points.
4. If one your mission is a success you will recieve 10 carreer points.
5. If your points go to 0 you are demoted back to a cadet and have to go back threw training.
6. If you get 1000 Points you will be promoted to 1st LT.

Once your a 1st you will the loose 150 for a death and recieve 10 carreer points for mission successes. If you reach 0 your back to 2nd or 1000 your promoted. Along with a promtion comes better ground crews. So your guns might jam less,eng run better, but your expected perform a lot better. There's also medals and other stuff.

The point values in the example above are just for demonstration purposes just to give you an idea of how it will work.

Battles will last for a given period of time before moving onto the next phase of the war.

Missions with be automaticly generated by the host, and have a substantial AI componet of either bombers or ground vehicles.
Offensive missions will be primarly to protect bombers or vehicels, defensive to kill bombers, or vehicles.

You will have 2 avatars, one for axis one for allied. You will only be able to play 1 avatar per battle. There ranks will be independent.

So we would like some suggestions on the name. This is just a short outline of the the things we have in mind for the mission based play.

So does anyone have a cool name for it? We view this as a combination of flight/combat sim and military role playing. We'll be putting out some news about all this shortly, but we're stuck on a name.

Both have been used before, one was an old movie about earning your pilot's wings in the USAAF, the other is that Discovery Channel show.............but it fits the theme, no?

Aces High: Total War

The new game model you describe matches Total War perfectly. Instead of just being one or two tiny aspects of battle, this is the whole package. Tons of planes, constant action and battle, AH:TW should be strongly considered.

What's up with that? It's hard enough to fly in a vulch arena without getting run down when your Pratt&Whitney overheats and the Japanese A/C following you, running on tree sap doesn't. The wines will bring down the walls. The people that will excel are the pasty skin guys that never leave there homes. Unless there is going to be a seperate charge for this homer I'll be sticking with "Aces High Classic" before I switch to the "New World Order".

...no one has ever done an AWACS sim before, right? So it will grab people's attention. When they read the breakdown of the acronym I'll bet they'll download the software for the 2 week free trial period.

Also, in the next version put everyone's icon and typed text in a different color if they are 'new' - this will let the general population of the MA know they are dealing with someone new.

Also, in the next version put a 'best of' listing for all the TODs...

Most kills in a TOD: pilot handle, squad (if any) and TOD #

Most kills landed in 1 sortie: pilot handle, squad (if any) and TOD #

...etc.

Tag lines for 2.0:

If understand correctly there will be no field capture in the new arena and the missions will not be genrated by players. So the "join my mission" and "follow me to victory" calls wont be there. You whether join a mission, complete it and live or you dont. I suspect the mt will appeal to squads more hen individuals as I dont see to many 1 man mission being successful.

People have suggested a "mission leader" based on rank who has the power to remove those in a mission who are disruptive. This is a good idea but ht hasnt said anything 1 way or the other.

FWIW, there have been a lot of nice suggestions, but only those with "Campaign", "Career", or "Tour of Duty" in the name quickly convey to me the gist of what the new arena will be about.

Since both the Main and the Mission arena will get the new graphics engine, etc., I think it would be confusing to refer to only one of them as Aces High II.

Just my thoughts...

For all we know, HT says 10 points are given out on a successful mission. I'd like to assume that means no points if your assigned mission was a failure. (maybe additional scores for kills achieved, only when mission is successful?)

Start off from 2nd Lt. with 500 points... reach 1st Lt. at 1000 points.. that means, you'll need at least 50 successful missions without any deaths to get to the next rank! Sounds like a real challenge to us average guys :)

I have serious issues with a scoring system designed this way. If you lose 100 points for dying, but you lost nothing for utterly failing your mission objectives, players will exhibit unrealistic flying styles.

In other words, flying to live will become the single most important thing in the game, even more important than fulfilling mission objectives or protecting the lives of others. Players would be more likely to cut and run than help out wingmen under such a system; they could abort potentially dangerous missions early and easily. It would also benefit those who use fellow countrymen as "chum." And since such behavior would be rewarded (or at least not penalized), those who practice it would be those who advance in rank and wield control and influence over others.

Just my early thoughts anyway.

In a reply to some questions in an old thread he replied that for instance if your mission is to escort bombers then you wont get any award if your bombers dont make to target.

For the bomber pilot he must hit his target and rtb.

If you are assigned to defend a target from being bombed then you must do that and rtb.

I cant imagine getting points for just staying alive if you fail in your mission. Then why fight at all.........

How and if he plans on scoring partial success I dont know. But you could have it where the attacker must destroy XXX% of his target and rtb. So if 18 bombers go to bomb a strat object those that survive and as long as say 75% target is killed you get full points for the mission. Under 75% you get 1/2 points under 50% you get nothing. Same with attacking those bombers if you kill 75% and a few drop then you get full points etc.

But HT may consider adding a multiplier for the number of kills you get.

Until we see the details theres nothing we can really get from his post.

Maybe HT can open a question/answer forum just regarding the new MT. As long as it doesnt take up to much of his time.

Right, that's understood. The thing that worries me isn't offering rewards for mission success, but rather not offering penalties for total mission failure (or the loss of wingmen). In other words, in a system where you lose 100 points for dying, nothing if you fail a mission, and gain 10 points for successfully completing a mission, the incentive exists to cut and run rather than sticking out a tough mission. Why lose 100 points, after all, when you could just lose nothing?

Example: You're in a group of P-51s tasked to protect B-17s from enemy fighters. Along come a bunch of 190s. Uh oh! They're higher! There are more of them! Time to bug out and wait for a better mission opportunity later... better to lose nothing than to lose 100 points, after all. In the meantime, the other P-51s are slaughtered (they all lose 100 points) and the buffs are all slaughtered (they all lose 100 points). At the end of the day, they can't do much about your tactics because, hey, you're gonna outrank them at this rate.

How would you penalize death?

Obviously the best way would make the penalty for mission failure such that it encourages you to fight. But unless that penalty is equal to a death then you will have those guys playing the percentages.

Can you imagine you are in a b17 with 51 escorts and run into a higher and larger number of enemy. From your tail position you see the 51s flying in oppossite direction.......lol

1) One option discussed described, that people accepted you to join the mission not everyone was free to join any mission, So the designated flight lead would choose who he would like around him. If you get a bad reputation you might be stuck with bad tasks, ie. Bomber gunner.
2) Or you had a minimum point value to join a mission for designated planes/roles i.e. only need 100 to fly a bomber, and 1200 to fly a fighter etc..

Missions are plotted together, meaning missions are planned by the avatars so they would intercept and make the experience enjoyable. If not it would be no fun to fly 2 hour missions with out encountering an enemy. So thus since missions are known by the avatars they can assign a "Difficulty" multiplier to a mission, a strike into berlin would have a higher difficulty rating than a bomb run in Southern Italy. If you die on a more "difficult" mission you might lose less points, but gain more if you succeed.

Think of like this...

Joe is opening a barber shop. He could name it something like "woozapda"... He would be press to get business, until a large ad campaign educated all his customers to what that was.

Joe could also name his business "Joe's Barber Shop" not flasy or catchy, but everyone knows its Joes and he is a hair cutter.

That Said....

Aces High "Tour of Duty" is one of the better names Iv seen.

Aces High "Air Campaign" Might be OK too.

Aces High "WW2 Pilot Career" might work too.

That sounds like a good deal of fun for a little while. Part of what makes AH what it is, is the human component. AI never goes to sleep. AI never runs for a beer, never gets mad, usually never misses, or if it does miss, its predictible. AI is gameable.

From the description of offense and defense type missions I take it that its going to be either fighters, or fighters slung with bombs. No bombers, no goons, no gv's, no captures, just plug a hole and fill a slot? I'm not trying to piss on the parade, but it just doesn't sound like much fun from that description. (not mine, yours)

Does that mean that we'll get no more new aircraft for AH classic? No new GV's? I was looking forward to lobbying for a SdKFz 251 with 8cm mortar in the back or nebelwurfers strapped on the sides.

Maybe, just maybe I should read this whole thread before posting this because all those questions have been answered, all those opinions stated.

I mean like I had this whole new thread running through my mind for the last couple weeks about how to possibley improve gameplay and haven't gotten a chance to post it yet. About how cool it would be if we had like a couple of entrenched possitions around the town. Maybe a couple of medium caliber AT guns and a trench with mg positions and mortar emplacement. Maybe just some positions with rifles and bazookas or panzerfaust. And like how maybe you could choose your position like you do with gun mounts on bombers or even like you do when gunning a ship. How it doesn't seem fair that all those cumb drunks in the back of the M3 can't ever seem to get a shot off and that wouldn't it be cool if one of those suckers had a bazooka with him and that once in a while you could get a crack at them big meenie tankers.
And, I was remembering how we were promised some towed arty and that with the new bomber flight system that maybe we could do arty like that, take 3 or 6 of em out have em get in formation to waste a town or a feild. How cool would it be to have a Long Tom towed around behind that M3...

Oh well, I guess maybe I should've read the whole thread huh...

The MT has greater potential to become a true online war then base capture in the main. Atleast the way I see it.

Obviously theres much work involved but I dont think HT would just develope one side of ah and not include those advances in the other. From his post clearly he isn't. People enjoy main arena play to much. Neglecting this area to push another more restrictive style of gameplay doesnt make much sense.

However, there seems to be support for a "mission type" arena. Atleast lots of folks say they would support it. Not just in the existing ah player base but from other games as well.

Suppose ht stopped everything and developed an FPS model for the main. It would "neat" but not much more then a "gimmick" like gvs are now.

Ofcourse we have to wait and see. I dont think ht wont allow bomber missions or even gv missions, theres no reason to. But having ai fill some of the roll is a good idea.

I am no blind fan boi but I am curious as to whats ahead.

I think HT's too stingy on points though.

If it costs you 100 points if you die & you have to fly 10 perfect missions to get back where you were thats kinda rough IMO.

Esp to start with, bump points for fully completed mission to 20, drop to 10 for partially completed, & rtb successfully.

As people learn what it takes and start completing more missions then easy enough to raise penalty for dieing.

Many other pilots fought a war until it ended or they were killed. Thus to me TOD seems a bit light... no offence meant ;)

Also "Tour" is already used for describing the monthly stats period. How would the plain "Duty" add to it to describe to future arena and its nature?

IMO, TOD is a great name in its present use. But for the future arena the name should rather point to its contents... Mission orientation and pilot Careers. There are many good suggestions from that basis.

I think this is apt and reflects not only the mission arena idiom whilst the name has a "heritage" within AH......

"Campaign"

Simple, punchy, sits easily with the other name "Classic" whilst also being able to place the player in any theatre of war.

Both reflect an arena/game/product that requires the player to return and participate to progress, both have actual RL conitations, both carry subconcious "tags" that bring to mind the adventure, challenge, glory, honour of the simulation (rather than the blood, guts, misery, loss, sacrifice of RL)

If I was wanting to put this on the shelves of the gaming shops with a bigger off line AI component then I would go for "Campaign" and "Classic" as a double box.

If I was expanding my online offering with a new product whilst enhancing the old one, then maybe "Tour of Duty" would be more appropriate.

World War II was the last war in which most the combatants of all nations were in for the duration. It was a war to the death or surrender.

Even when x amount of missions got someone out of a particular combat theater, he wasn't out of the military.

I do hope that night ops are going to be represented from time to time...? :-)

Aand... I wonder how points using GVs will slot into this, or will they be separate from air points?

Oh, and do at least give us Axis types metric displays (or the ability to choose between metric and imperial), m'dears, please. Adds to the flavour. It jars horribly having Imperial gauges in LW planes. Bit like tuning a New York Jazz station on your B17s radio gear and getting a Russian station playing polkas instead... :-}

PPS: Just spotted Tilts post - very good points. Calling 'em "Classic" for what we have now and "Campaign" for what is to be is punchy, descriptive, and easily remembered. gets my vote.

Many vote for Tour of Duty (first recommended by gatso), which I also like but agree with some others that it's too light because it implies you have a tour and that's the end of it.

Somebody pointed out that Tours of Duty would be more accurate, and so it would.

Names with "career" in them find favor too, although WWII was more survival than career.

Which is why after rereading the entire thead with its many great suggestions, I vote for what Shane first posted as Total War. We would then have:

Aces High Classic
Aces High Total War

Another excellent choice I think is wulfies:

Aces High Combat
Aces High Warfare

As is BlauK's:

Aces High Classic
Aces High Combat Career (or just Career)

And Hazed's:

Aces High Classic
Aces High Campaign

And for simple appeal I still like my:

Aces High Classic
Aces High Max

Hmmmm, and after rereading HiTech's initial post and requirements, a word that pops up often is "career," but what permeates everything is SURVIVAL. If you die you lose more than you gain when you live.

Hence, might also consider:

Aces High Classic
Aces High Survival (not Survivor, because not just one but many)

Maybe somebody can make that more active since it might sound too passive, as in cowering in a bunker instead of hunting enemies.

Minor point 1: Someone recommend a title whose acronym is AWACS, which is widely known in the U.S. as Airborne Warning and Control System. Better to have title whose acronym is not already known as something else.

Minor point 2: HiTech's initial post had it as AcesHigh, not Aces High. Please keep Aces High as two separate words and not some unnatural fusion like WordPerfect.

Minor point 3: Although Classic has a connotation of something whose prime is past, that's what this thread said the new version would be called. Something like that probably is needed to differentiate the exiting version from its becoming two new versions.

Seems to me the cleanest way to do this is the prevalent recommendations of Aces High Classic and Aces High (Whatever). Meaning not necessary to clutter the title with II, as in Aces High II Classic and Aces High II Whatever.

As several people have said, go ahead and number it Aces High 2.0 and so on, but don't make that part of the main title.

After all this, reflecting on it for the 157th time, I think Shane's

Aces High Classic
Aces High Total War

best combines the overall impact of what HiTech and crew are developing.

There is also a land battle sim using the same phrase. With potential copyright issues looming, I suspect that "Tour of Duty", as good as it sounds, is probably something HTC will have to pass on.
