Title: setting up later today
Post by: Dichotomy on September 18, 2022, 12:18:13 PM
HOTAS should be here next week so I watched this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fs6b1HM_Y_k  something I'm a little fuzzy on.  Do I need to set up AH on the pc or download it to the headset?

You set it up on the PC.

The PC runs the game, the Oculus is used as a display (even though the Oculus is capable of storing and running apps - in this case it's just used as a display.)   Do you have a Link cable?

yes sir.. 15'.  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09TN25765/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Getting set up to play again isn't something I've scrimped on.

So once I use the link cable and get into AH it's fairly basic after that? Just do some muddling around and get set up?

Pretty much. Install the Oculus software and get the headset set up initially. Get that straightened out first. Once you get AH installed, when you want to run it in VR you have to use the DX11 exe--the DX9 version won't run VR. Put a shortcut for that on your desktop. Have the Oculus software running and minimized first. Run AH. AH is aware you have a headset plugged in. You'll see a dialog box on the desktop asking if you want to use your Oculus headset, click yes to run it in VR, no to run it on the desktop. AH well start in the headset. You're off to setting up the rest in the game. First thing I did was to disable the Oculus touch controllers.

One thing. When you start AH your gonna have to answer that dialog box to use the Oculus headset or not on the desktop. You'll be sitting there in the headset and nothing will happen til you do that.

ya I've got the mirroring software set up so I'll do as much as I can on the PC.  Okay I think I'm ready to go.

Thanks Gents.

disregard.. it is DX11.

I got on the runway and my mouse suddenly wouldn't work and I couldn't use my handsets to click the checkboxes but I have a week to fool with that.  Probably some kind of silly conflict.  That's enough of that for the day

ya I can already tell I'm going to have to pony up for some prescription lenses but that's fine.

Look into Reloptix lenses. I just got them for my G2. They're perfect even with my extreme scrip and they were half the price of the ones I had for the RiftS. Blue block and anti-reflective coatings included.

Do you use the prescription for long distance, or for reading?

The prescription lenses you use for VR are NOT reading glasses. They're your actual prescription. In fact, if you wear progressives or regular bifocals they'll tell you to leave that part of the scrip off the order. My scrip is pretty extreme. IIRC one eye is like a -10. Don't let these contacts fool you--I'm blind as a bat! And at nearly 60--readers have been a neccessity for quite a while! I have them all around the house and in my desk at work. Heck I even have safety glasses with cheaters in them!

I found that there were only a couple of these companies that will make the extreme scrips, Reloptix was one. They were a special order and took longer to get but were no more expensive than their regular lenses and those were roughly half what I'd have paid using the company I used for my RiftS lenses, VROpticians. Cool thing about the Reloptix system is you get an adapter for your specific headset. Pops on the headset lense. Your prescription lense attaches to it magnetically. So they're really easy to swap in and out if you share the headset with someone else. They can just get another pair of the lenses without the adapter. Thought that was a pretty cool feature. I'm really happy with mine.

Atm I'm only using reading glasses but I can tell my long vision is going

Seems like you'd need the readers since the screens are literally an inch or so from your eyeballs. Truth is you don't use the readers for VR. It's either fit your glasses in the facepad (and risk scratching either the glasses, the headset lenses or both!) or get the prescription lenses. That's if you need them which you don't.

I use my computer glasses in my vive pro headset

Readers are too close and distance is too far for me

okay it's all here.  Thought you guys would get a kick out of this.  I had a friend of mine build me this table top.  it sits down in the cupholders on the chair and I put some velcro on the back side of the arm rest.  The table top is the cloth side of velcro and I put the hook side on the controllers.  Keeps the controllers in place just fine (just tested it).  Getting there guys.

I just ordered Reloptix lens inserts after watching this video review:

There is also a 5% coupon code below the video, so my total was only about $76.   That's about $30 cheaper than VROptician, which I have for my old Reverb G1.   Was satisfied with them, but I wanted to give Reloptix (a Colorado company) my business this time.

They are also able to build a little bit of the ADD power of your prescription into the lens.  Mine is +2.5 each eye, so I thought I'd try that option.

thanks dude... I'll look into it.  Going to shut down work at noon to give myself the whole weekend + to get dialed in with what I have.

everything is put together then life happened.  Had to take dad to the ER and be on top of him for a few days, work has been overwhelming, etc.

I'm still trying to figure out how to make the game work.  I've got it DL'd on my headset and the PC just not exactly sure what the next step is and no research has been particularly helpful .  Just got a couple of meetings and paperwork to do today so I'm hoping to carve out the afternoon to get finished.

If yall have any tips at this stage it would be greatly appreciated.  Someone said I have to set up my controllers in the VR game.  That's cool and all just being prudent and trying to make sure I don't mess something up in the process.

been swamped

For those of you that don't know I moved in with my 83 year old dad and my 77 year old mom 5 years ago so they didn't have to worry about assisted living.

So anyway the other day I had some time and said 'okay I'm setting this squeak up'.  Get started and it asks me for a 4 digit passcode.  Umm what?  So anyway I go looking for Meta support.  How fun they don't have a number you can call.  So I send an email.  3 days later they reply.  I couldn't understand their bs and asked to get a number for a live operator.  Nope can't have that.  So the suggestion was to factory reset and start over.  That's on tomorrows agenda after I cook lunch for mom and dad.  Quesadillas by the way.

I AM trying without squeaking on the board LOL

Has anybody looked at the new meta?  I AM intruiged.

Okay gang life got very complicated for me for a bit.  Started a new job that's probably going to be temporary while I look for something better, dad took a bad fall and was in the hospital for a few days, mom just got off of chemo and I've been taking care of everything for her (cooking, cleaning, etc) while she recuperates and taking her to the hospital to see dad daily.

ANYWAY

Just haven't had the time to mess with my Quest.  Every time I start to the intercom goes off and it's 'okay I'll be right down' UGH.

Can someone write up an ELI5 for how to set this puppy up?  Normally I wouldn't ask but I really want to get going I just don't have the time to do all the research and do a step by step for myself.

Thanks in advance.
