Title: Top ten oldest squads in Aces High?
Post by: oboe on February 11, 2015, 05:32:48 PM
Being a sometimes history buff, I got curious about old squads in AH.   Starting with info from the "Happy Anniversary" thread to the Musketeers, and some digging on my own, I have a start:

- The Gunfighters (late 80s)
- The Musketeers (1990)  www.musketeers.org (http://www.musketeers.org)
- The Freebirds (1992) www.ah-freebirds.com (http://www.ah-freebirds.com)
- The Damned (1988) http://www.damnedsquadron.com/ (http://www.damnedsquadron.com/)
- The Screaming Blue Messiahs
- Pigs On The Wing (2003) http://www.wherethepigsfly.org/ (http://www.wherethepigsfly.org/)
- Arabian Knights (2000?)   http://arabian-knights.org (http://arabian-knights.org)
- The Blue Knights
- The Muppets (2000?)  http://bbs.dasmuppets.com/ (http://bbs.dasmuppets.com/)

The 412th "Braunco Mustangs" were started April 12th, 2001. Clearly not the oldest, but even after a name change to the 412th Friday Night Volunteer Group, were still kicking. <S>

Our squadron history officially begins in 1992 with the formation of the first squadron in Red Baron (online - Sierra Network).  The first members were hanging around other simulations together long before that time, however.

80th only goes back to 2006, although the origins can be traced back to the Nomads squadron in Airwarrior which was 96.

The Flying Circus one of the earliest squads in AH.  Started early 2000.  As a matter of fact Ripsnort interviewed leaders of the earlier squadrons in game.

Vati our Co was interviewed at that time.  We basically were a group of guys who left AW early and formed up with some gents that

were in game a few months before we were.  (Beta)

I liked some of the old descriptive squad names.  Nomads were one of the few squads that rotated countries, Landscapers were a bomber squad... great names.  Of course we can't forget LTAR (lead to air ratio, AA GV squad) here.

Great stuff, keep it coming!   I'm especially interested in the squads with active web sites.

When I started in WarBirds back in '98, squad websites were the squad's public face - a way to communicate to the world what your squad was about, who was in it, etc.   The squads blessed with able communications officers (web guys) often had their own BB built into the website.   AH's own BB supported squad BBs sortof supplanted that function, and squad websites became less useful.   Alot of  really nice squad websites are now gone.  I remember the Screamin' Blue Messiah's site looked like it was made by someone with a flair for graphic design.  And remember the Swamp Foxes?  Their website was set up like a virtual office and you would open doors or click on desk drawers to enter the different pages of the site.

Brooke, thank for posting that historical document!  Almost 2000 pages of callsigns!   That is very interesting to look through.  I like the idea of AW's "tail number" - was that a numerical ID assigned to players?  Some of the callsigns looked too long to display online as a handle.

Please do!   Especially if its true that the Gunfighters are the oldest continually operating squad out there.    AH squad and player lookups and scores seem to be broken for me so I cant find out much aboout squad membership any more.

Should we let Pyro and Hitech back in? After the incident with the spaghetti and the horse statue at the saloon at Dallas in 2001, I'm not sure they're still off the hook.  We could be bribed...

The Specialists were formed in Air Warrior back in November of 1996 by Darks and TC3. We flew RR and FR there and came over here when Air Warrior folded.
I restarted the squad here and have been the CO ever since, although I don't lead the squad now, Sku is acting <CO>.

Furbars some time around 1990. Also I was one of the early guys in the gunfighters. I have an old roster some where of the squad.

Also AH's first line of code was written in Nov 1998. It really was a pain to stare a blank screen and have to start again after WB.

Here's a little history of the 56th in WBs and AH.

There is a guy named Daff, a British fellow, that stood up the 56th Fighter Group in WBs.  This was a prominent squad with several notable sticks that did a damn good job flying P-47s in the virtual WBs skies.  If you ever flew a P-47 in WBs, that statement should impress you.

I was a member of the 332 Flying Mongrels in WBs - started in 1998 IIRC.  When AHs Beta was in full swing, the 332nd split with about half migrating to AH and the other half staying in WBs. There was a lot of loyalty then and many thought AH was a start up crew with nothing to compare to WBs.

Daff, throwing the dice created a free Beta account in AH and established the 56th in AH in 1999.  He only had a few of the WBs 56th come over an establish accounts but nevertheless, the 56th was established in AH in 1999.

In 2000, three guys named Sancho, Frenchy, and Ammo had this great idea to form the 56th in AH.  We discussed it and decided to do it the honorable way.  Daff was still active in WBs, and we approached him about disbanding the 56th in AH and allowing us to carry the flag.  He agreed and the 56th started recruiting in AH in 2000.

The squad grew quickly!  All we had in the early days was the P-47D-30 (renamed the D-40 later).  I guess it was about 2002 when we got the D-11 and just a few weeks later the D-25.  By that time the 56th was strong in AH.

The 56th eventually disbanded in 2011 or so.  I kept in touch with Nomde and he let me know.

I came back and restarted the squad in April 2013 (I think).  Aztec and Berra were the first guys to come aboard under my second watch.  Frenchy came back shortly after and we have had a big turnover ever since.

Currently there are only 5 of us left flying.  The 332nd Flying Mongrels is alive and well.  :rock

"Noses in the wind since 1997" eh, Teerex?

www.332nd.org is no longer active.  You guys had a good website back in the day, too!

What is with the death of most of the squads websites?  Are squads using Facebook now? Or Twitter?   Or has there been a whole environmental shift away from the services and communication that squad websites provided and now its all about just being in-game?

One of the best parts of the AW days on AOL was the squad boards as you could see everyone's.  One of the most hilarious bit for me was the Nomad board was on the bottom.  We jokingly started referring to it as the basement and portrayed it as the coveted spot on the boards.  Some folks didn't get the joke and thought we were being shown favoritism.  The poor guys that had to moderate all that :)

But you could bounce into another squads forums and have fun.  I think it helped folks get to know each other beyond their own squad.

Brother oboe,  Daddog coined that phrase "Noses in the wind since 1997" back in the days of WB's.  The dogs website was a good one,  you could look up each member sorties, earned ribbons and such.  Sadly it is no more.  I got to lookin around and found in my dusted shelves a book:

This book is published by Burbank's Books.  Warbirds: the story so far..  By: Dave "Prophet " Williams,  Geof "DocDoom" Evens,  Duane "Krod" Godwin,  Michael "Burbank" Hyde,  Foreword by: Dale " Hi-Tech " Addink...
OH-BOY,  back in the day,  this was quite a book. :old:

Great points you bring up, about websites, Facebook, Twitter and the shift going away from services and communication.  Granted, with such a fast and faster pace of the world we live in, finding time just to be in the game is hard.

Fore me,  I'm 67 years,  Combat Vet with the 1/508th 82nd Air-Borne, Viet Nam 68/69.  Retired Monterey County Peace Officer Park Ranger at Laguna Seca Raceway..  I just purchased Thrustmaster  Hotas Warthog controllers and Saitek Pro Rudder Peddles.   This game keeps getting Better and Better and as long as AH is here, I'LL be here... :x

I too had a Burbanks Books publication - it was "Air-to-Air Gunfighter" by DocDoom.   Great book, and IIRC he did all the illustrations himself.

One thing I really, really like about today's environment is the YouTube cinematic videos.  For talented people who have a knack for editing/directing, and who take the time to learn the ins and outs of the film viewer's capabilities -- they can produce some pretty engaging videos.     Couldn't do much of that years ago.

http://flightsimmachinima.blogspot.com/ (http://flightsimmachinima.blogspot.com/) has some of the best, but most (all?) are based on IL-2, though I believe some of the best AH videos deserve to be shown there too.

Brooke, thanks for posting that old gem.  It's a shame we couldn't find the missing campaigns--everyone in the squad looked through old 3.5" disks and h/d's, on the 'net, etc.  At the time, it was everything we could find.  A big thanks to --[--Dicey---- and squaddies who had or found a bunch of that and I then formatted it for publication.

Lastly, I apologize for the site's lack of recent activity.  I used to maintain it but between work and school (old dogs can still learn too), I just don't have the time these days.  Besides, we're a bunch of old guys  :old:, so we're not that interesting.... (yeah, right).   :salute

FWIW,

AKUAG..although..not by the same name. Spatula, Whisk and Ladle flew AW under a similar themed squad name...
I think in AH he started Airborne Kitchen Utensil Assault Group about 2000..maybe 2001....

As Spat was a trainer, AKUAG had a bit of structure when I first joined.... boy how things have changed... only three people now... stopped trying to find recruits... they just aren't there..

Duxford Wing RAF has been around since BEFORE Aces High.  Sadly, we have a single limey in our ranks now.  When I joined in Jan of '08 there were a half dozen limeys, a few dingy Welshmen, and even a rascally Scot.  :D  Oh, I think we had an Afrikaner as well.

Now, there are mostly yanks and a Canuck or two. And we are blessed to have a qbert, too.   :D

Regarding the website not being updated for years - I'm curious.  Why do you think that is?   (And your squad's website is certainly not the only one suffering from lack of attention.).  Were squad websites just a phase in the chronology of MMO history?  Has their functionality and usefulness been supplanted or replaced by something else?

Made some fixes, added some squads you guys mentioned.  Removed the Gunfighters as they appear to be defunct.   Looks like 1996 was a good year for squads...lotta 20 year anniversaries coming up next year.  Wish I could find a start year for the Birds of Prey; I just stuck them in the 1992-1996 gap.

I remember surfing the WarBirds web-ring as well.  So many things in common between WarBirds and AW.   WarBirds also had a long running fictional diner thread on their website, called the "Wingless Cafe".   The thread never died, people just kept adding to the storyline.  It sounds like AW had a similar thread, around a bar?   Here's a pic I saved of some of the characters:

Oboe,

327th Steel Talons was formed in 1997. At least according to the History page on our old web site.  Sorry for the misinformation.

Though we messed around with rank at times, we're pretty much a squad of equals. We agree equally it's still KOOL's squad.

I flew with them for along time for what had to be 8-10 years ago for years. I randomly come back to the game for a few months until life takes back over. Still have a few of them on facebook, I'm actually curious if they still fly. Last time I came back(somewhere in 2014 they were still around in the squad channel.) I do know the website is down due to lack of low traffic, it wasn't worth keeping it up anymore. Sure do miss those days.

I don't know why I was so inspired, but I put together this infographic-like timeline for the Elder Squads of Aces High.   It was really interesting looking through the squad websites.  If I couldn't find a website or squad graphic, I tried making one up for the fun of it.

(Click on the image for larger size)

I used to be only interested in historical squads, but I gotta say when you free yourself from historical constraints, the creativity and humor can really flow!  Pigs on the Wing has their own store where you can buy "PigWare" products.  Nguk nguk nguk!

This was my alternate patch, created for the 332nd Flying Mongrels:

Well, here's what I came up with.  Lots of history in this table:

Congrats to ALL you guys who have kept the faith and kept these squads going for so long.    :salute

Three squads I can think of that I was a member two of the three:

1.  Army of Darkness (AOD)- Led by SkyD - Late 90's until 2001 Air Wariror's death then jumped to and Aces High until it folded around 2003 but re-activated in late 2000's led by BADR to fold again few years later.  :salute

2. Jabostaffel (JB) led by JB42  (I was a member of for two years 2003-2005 as JB27) I don't know the squad history but I believe this squad lasted close to ten years in Aces High.  It was a Axis only squad (except for free day Fridays... :rofl) Great bunch of fighter pilots. Wonderful times such as flying 15-20 TA152's at 30k looking bombers and what a sight to see.  Til this day a former squaddie still flies under JB11.  :salute

3. I wasn't a part of but I they were our rivals while I was part of the JB's and we had many countless encounters with them is the MAWS. I don't remember who led the MAWS but they were a huge squad. Much respect to my former foes.  :joystick:

Sorry to hear about the 479th, Ack-Ack.    Little Edris is one of my favorite 38Js in the game.   Are you still flying?

Yeah, it was sad pulling the plug on the Raiders but at the end I was the only one left as the others had moved on to life outside of AH. Yep, still flying.

BigB is still posting over at FW from MAW, and yes, his posts are as unintelligible there as his posts and 200 chatter was here, but he is still around, sort of, and the only MAW I know from those days.

I remember the JB guys well, great bunch of LW pilots, some great, really skilled 109 pilots, it's too bad they all aren't still around, but whenever I still see JB11 I think it is, I always remember them in their hey day.

It's funny how much things change, I remember when I flew with the 13TAS P51 guys for a while, the 412th Braunco Mustangs were another P51 squad where I knew a lot of guys. I don't know any of the new ones, even when I was speaking with their CO or XO recently, about how the squad got its name (the original CO's father had a boat called Braunco), they had no idea about any of that.  It's hard to remember some times just how long this game has lasted, and how much has changed over the years.  Hopefully in another 15 years somebody will be saying the same thing about all the squads playing now.

Thanks I'll include CMC.   Can't find a website for the 4th FG.   Who's the CO?

I did find this very nice webpage for the Loose Cannon Association though:

http://david.tenifer.com/aceshigh/ (http://david.tenifer.com/aceshigh/)

A squad of both people AND other squads.   Pretty interesting;  not a pure FG or BG, but sort of a composite group like the Air Commandos in the Far East.   Great webpage; very modern and clean layout.

Wish AH webpage still had a search function to list all the squads and their webpages.  I can only find the function that allows you to look up a player's squad...

Good stuff Oboe.  I am unsure when Daff started the 56th in WBs, but definitely before 2000.  Maybe Save can say?  When I started WBs in 1998, the 56th was active there.

In about 2008 I joined the 81st Krewsaders the squadron which started in 2000. Most members of which have left the game entirely. Some members I see sometimes are Army81st, Frod and Limbo0. DEMAN was the first CO of the squad with Swillie, Zulu, TTiger81, Earshot, and Swoops to be other commanding officers of which after Swillie left. I managed to save these really old images from a website that is now gone. But I still have them all the same. I just thought this squadron was worthy of mention because it literally had the whole map trying to kill its force of some 15-70 bomber pilots and escorts every titanic Tuesday when Swoops was running it. The squadron officially disbanded in about 2012, the 777th Heavens Demons being its successor leaded by Swoops. At its height it had some 80-90 people in it with another squad ran by Limbo0 and Greens being its sister squad consisting of mostly fighters and escorts. I greatly miss this squad but I am glad other squadrons took the moment to follow in its foot steps and lead other massive bomber raids across the map and to continue sporting in friendly, fun, and just awesome game time of a community squadron.  :salute

Yeah there's a couple 777th websites I had up, the ones still up are the ones I keep for those sentimental purposes. The 777th Heavens Demons disbanded before 2013 only being around for about 2 years. The result of which was Swoops having to leave to do his job as a commercial pilot and leadership chain not kicking in like it should have.

Was in 52nd Kiwi from 2001 on and Kiwi Red in AW3 and AWMV before that from about 1996. Joined 71 (Eagle) Squadron in about 2008 when the Kiwi Red leader retired from flying. Currently on hiatus.

Most of the people I enjoyed winging with have disappeared over the years.

Using the squad list link that Fugitive provided, I examined all 700+ squads listed.   More than half the list contained defunct squads, where the squad CO is no longer a player or member of the squad.  I eliminated these and sorted the remaining by total membership.  Where squads have exceeded the 32-member limit, I combined all the squads into a single squad.

My congrats to the COs of these squads for building such large and in some cases, very long-lasting organizations, and best wishes for the health and strength of your squads.   I really do think that a healthy squad environment is one of the factors in Aces High lasting so long.

I can make a case for the Flying Pigs. Not AirWarrior old, but started with Hitech Creations certainly.

We used to be at www.flyingpigs.com. I started playing Air Warrior on GEnie in 1991, and that's when I met DoK GonZo and many of the legends of the Air Warrior crowd such as Drex flying the A20. If you want to hit the way back machine, I can remember when Air Warrior had a new module, a film editor, coded by a young programmer turk named Dale 'Hitech' Addink. Oldest player I knew then, and this was 1991, was Ghost Rider, who was in his late 60s early 70s back then, and I believe actually served in WW2.

The Pigs started in Dale's first venture, Confirmed Kill. This predated Warbirds. It was for pre IP stack Windows, pre Win95 machines where you had to install a telnet client and telnet to the server once you established a SLIP/PPP link and then started the game and ran it that way.

Early members were Tigershark and Sean 'eagl' Long. The Pigs fought for the Gold color (never Red, and especially not purple, that was the Black Sheep color). Chris "CJ" Martin (callsign: smut) actually founded the squad via a mailing list. Chris is best known for being a producer on what is, arguably, the finest flight sim for the PC ever created, Jane's F-15 by EA. Up there with Falcon 4.0 and the follow on F-18 game.

I commissioned an artist by the name of Mary Lynn Skirvin to draw the FlyingPigs logo. I'm ashamed to say I can't find the logo at the moment, and the flyingpigs.com web site is no more. But it was so top notch that I had to send cease and desist letters to guys in Singapore who made coffee cups and t-shirts with the logo and sold them on the street. A USAF squadron approached the Pigs and the flying pigs logo is now the official logo of a real B2 bomber, the logo was etched on the plane itself, on a steel plate near the ladder.

I know weird little tidbits, like the blue doll under the desk in the old Warbirds tower with the pins sticking out of it is Dale's little message to a certain player from that era.

If I can find somebody who has the flyingpigs old logo, I will try and post it somewhere. Tigershark had it professionally inked and it was very popular for a time. Other Pigs of that era where Steve 'ichi' Dunbar and Bernie 'Worr' Worrell, Glen 'roamer' Becker and many others, including Marko 'mili' Milisevic and Vila.

-XX- - apologies for any inaccuracies in advance

Edit: I found the logo. If you want to strip it and add it to the time line, here it is:

If I recall correctly "The Flying Pigs" was officially a squad by late 1995, growing fairly rapidly and gaining several members through 1996 and 1997.

A tidbit to add to the flying pigs lore, we won the inaugural 10 v 10 dueling tournament.  Can't remember what year that was but the fights were epic, some of the duels going down to the last couple of planes on both sides.  I vaguely recall there being a second tournament and maybe we won that too?  My memory fails me but at the height of The Flying Pigs strength we were arguably the toughest squad to beat both in group or individual duels.  Strangely enough, other than the 10v10 dueling tournament, few of us spent much time on the dueling ladder.

One of The Flying Pigs favorite squadrons must have been the Dweebs of Death.  Those guys would launch 40+ aircraft on a massive base raid and half of them would auger during their first dive bombing pass, and later find out that most of their troop carrier ships either ended up at the wrong field or aborted due to the phone ringing or a pizza delivery or some such non-game nonsense.  Those guys had a lot of spirit and a lot of fun but darned if I can remember a raid of theirs that we opposed that didn't end up with me augering because I was laughing so hard :)

A few years before we slowly faded out, The flying pigs and a few other squadrons formed the "BarnYard Animals Composite Air Wing", or "BYACAW".  It was dreamed up by a few of us at one of the conventions.  We'd have a handful of squadrons full of people we met at the cons (such as the Rogue Gryffins) join up in a single country and we'd spend a few hours crushing the arena.  We tried to not do it too often since it probably wasn't too fun for everyone else to see 100-150 well coordinated opponents rise at once to kill everything in sight and attempt to take the whole arena in a few hours, but that's one of the things we'd do every month or two.

I'd have to ask "smut" but I think the original flying pigs designation was VF-214 or something like that?  I can't remember for sure but the original idea, before the squad formed up as a non-denominational killing machine, was to represent a historical Naval squadron.  The squadron had switched to "The Flying Pigs" before I joined and I remember fighting against the likes of -XX-, smut, worr, sqid, mili (who made the original WB/AH scoring pages that still haven't been matched in quality), and the rest, wondering if I could ever join such a squad.  Turns out they were a great group of guys and joining wasn't hard, just had to have the right mix of fun and desire to kill everything to fit in.  Good times, lasted for years.

Oh yea, I also remember running across a lighted sign for a "Flying Pigs" pub in Amsterdam in 2005 that was essentially our squadron logo with a couple of very minor color changes.  Strange how some things spread around.

Very interested in more info like this.  Wish I had a screenshot of the old WB tower.  I don't recall a blue doll, abd I started in late '98.  What is the message?  A warning?   Who is he other player?

Funny, I remember my exposure to AW was AW III, and I could not deal with the cockpit/screen arrangement.   I never made it online.   But WB grabbed me immediately.

The stories are Hitech's to tell.

Last bit, because the Pigs are a storied group and there are alot of stories. But these two deserve mention - Lephturn from the Pigs for at least 2 years in 98-99 ran the trainers in Warbirds. He spent countless hours helping new players learn the game and get good to keep them interested.

And James 'snak' Schuldes.
http://web.archive.org/web/20030114014352fw_/http://www.flyingpigs.com/pigs/snak.html

Snak should be familiar to many here. Snak and another non-Pig player (if anyone can help me here, it would be appreciated) ran the scenarios for several years. Weekend events such as the Solomons and the Fast Carriers series, which had online moments so insane I have yet to see modern games like Eve Online that are built for carrier war and metagaming haven't equalled.

Solomons II was such a big deal, I know DoK came back and helped put work into that event. Multiple weekends, strategic objectives. I found a PDF map still around:

DoK still has his design for his T-shirt up after all these years

Snak would come to the arena and only fly bombers just to test accuracy and spend time on autopilot so he could network all evening with players and squadrons. He spent countless hours planning and coordinating these large events. Those were fun.

<S> Lephturn, SNAK, DoK

Whatever happened to Bob Heffner?  His maps and aids made a big impression on me.    Great quality, great looking documents.

The Aggressors, a Air Warrior squadron from the early 1990s, had lots of jokes about mating with sheep.

Here is one of their recruitment pictures, this one REALLY needs to make your timeline:
