I am sorry, but I cannot help it - Otto Carius sound like a terrible medical condition...
A: "what I'd wrong with him?"
B: "He has Otto Carius".
A: " Poor guy".

Thanks for posting! I had never heard of him.
Quick question. When you scroll down on the page there is a video that plays some music and shows picture of the gentleman. What is the song being played? I am guessing a military tune similar to US Taps or Amazing Grace.

All German tankers wore black uniforms with Totenkopf insignia.

Yes I do. Thanks Bailey.

Sorry to hear this. Being kinda a German tank afficienado, I knew of Otto Carius from way back. His Book "Tigers in the Mud" is an excellent read. I was actually going to name my present German Shepard dog after him but my wife over ruled me. May he rest in peace :salute.

I am a us citizen but you can hardly say, I am colonial. my german heritage goes along as I was born in the canadian province of mexico. I right now live next to ontario. I have family that fought for both germany and the usa. heck I also have raramuri and spanish blood.
but truly zack you calling anybody in the usa colonials is kindda getting old. heck i bet most us citizens arent even descendants from england by now. btw didnt we get into the war because you British blokes signed stupid treaties and so we had to go rescue you :devil.

Japan atacked Pearl Harbor aswell as many other islands in the pacific. Hitler, being allies with Japan, actually formally declared war on the U.S (only time he ever did that). By creating a two front war he probably thought America would have huge problems producing anything that could stop his roll through Europe.
But irregardless, this thread is about a man who followed his orders. Not all German soldiers were bad people. They are indeed humans and only following their commanders orders.
-
You are responsible for your own actions
-
Everyone is responsible for their own actions, and only their own actions. Regardless of whether they are German tankers on the eastern front or for example British bomber crew over Dresden.

I knew Harris' bomber campaign would eventually mentioned.

One would hope it wouldn't be necessary, but...

Dont start wars and you dont get bombed
The Germans wanted the war while they were winning and moaned about it when they were losing.
So terrorists today should not be bombed?

Last time I checked Britain declared war on Germany.

Heh. You've been reading AJP Taylor, comrade.
Poor victimized Germany....

War is hell, Nazi leadership was evil. Imperial Japanese Leadership was evil as was the bushido code as it was used to justify implorable actions. The allies made mistakes in hindsight.
A very small percentage of the German military personnel were Nazis and did evil deeds. As another poster mentioned, the subject tanker did his nation's duty. We shouldn't hold ill will 70 years later. Thank goodness as I have to live with and work alongside Germans and Italians.
Go read The Forgotten Soldier.

Who is AJP Taylor?
France and Britain declared war on Germany September 3rd 1939. September 4th RAF bombers raid Germany for the first time since WWI, half a year before the first German attack on Britain.

:salute Otto Carius
Predator, how about not hijacking another thread with your political views. We are simply acknowledging the passing of a WW2 combatant.
-
Zoney, you need to speak to Zack1234 about that.
-
What country has gone to war and captured territory only to give it back and rebuild it for the loser. :headscratch: :headscratch:
-
Many countries have done that, even in recent history. Wars to expand borders haven't happened in a long time by most large nations, but now it is done through intermediaries. For example 'volunteers' that fight for one side in a civil war and are incredibly well outfitted for 'volunteers'.
(probably belongs in another thread tho)
I read Carius's book, it was a good read and helped me see the conflict in a view I haven't had much experience with. Regardless, the stigma of the SS will haunt anyone who wore the uniform until the end of their days. This thread is a good example of that.
-
Except that Carius was not SS. Nor was he a volunteer. He was drafted into the army.
-
Sorry, you are right. He did fight along side them and if memory serves was invited.
-
See Rule #4
It is quite inappropriate for the thread.
-
This is getting way off topic folks.
-
Oh, almost forgot.
:salute Otto Carius.
