hi guys,
this is betty, july 28th and 29th is the date of the dayton airshow. i hope that yall can come, will be lots of fun. reply to this and let me know if you plan on attending. k
details follow :
its sounds like general admin is gonna b the best way to go, 19.00 per ticket and u can bring a folding chair, was told its the best way. go to http://www.daytonairshow.com and get ur tickets, they might b more at the gate, gate opens at 9am to 6pm, july 28th and 29th. i am gonna bring my folding chairs and a blanket to sit on also so if anyone needs a place to sit should be plenty of room.
i got us a good deal on room rates at the local holiday inn in dayton, its 14 miles from the airshow location and its right off I75. i had them put a block of rooms on hold for us, the group name its under is ACES HIGH room rates is 89.00. lots better than the 139.00 they were tryin to charge. we have 50 rooms held, but if they r not all taken up with in 30 days from arrival, they will put them back to rent to other ppl, just wanted to make sure we had enuff rooms for everyone. i think i'm gonna call her back and request that everyone have second floor rooms that way all us puter geeks wont bother other guest :)

I Still Have some Tickets for a Concert on Friday Eve the 27th. It's 5-10 mins from the Holiday Inn. $55 for Counting Crows, Live and Collective Soul at Fifth Third Field (yes it's outdoors and will go off rain or shine)

Also I can pick up Discounted Admission Tickets for the Airshow at $16 each so just let me know and I'll pick em up for you. I'm 5 mins north of the airshow parking nightmare. Park at my house and I'll take you to the entrance and drop you off and pick you up. (Cell Phone Required of course)

well dolby i'm pretty sure somewhere there will be, shegotya has next years to plan, we are taking turns planning stuff to keep it interesting :)
so just watch the boards prolly around the end of the year and shegotya will keep us all informed on next summers get together :)

I would like to offer my apoligies for not being there.
This sounds like a great event. Heck, I read Mr. Shaw's book while playing AW. I would like to personnally thank him. Please let him know that his book has been read and while it may be cartoonish, it has had an impact.
In fact, while returning stateside from Korea, I had an F-16 pilot ask me why I was reading it. AW explanation.....y'all know the rest.
Please keep posting these events. Hopefully, one day, I can make one.

I wasn't sure of how many adult beverages I'll be drinking so I reserved a room at the same hotel. At least its a worthwhile expenditure of hotel points :)

OK, I tried to set something up at Brixx for Friday night, NO GO.
So I checked out the Holiday Inn everyone is staying at and they have a nice Bar/Lounge area.
So I'm thinking thats the logical place to meet up.
The holday inn is right off i-75 south of downtown dayton exit 50 (dryden Road exit)
Lets say 8-9pm both Friday and Saturday nights.
A few of us won't get in till later because of travel plans or concerts.
I'll be there around 10 Friday night with betty and t-shirts in hand I hope.

Hey y'all...
I will be in Dayton on the 30th, so I will miss out on all the fun. The hotel you all are staying at is the hotel my company puts us in for weeks at a time. (NCR)
The bar is nice, with drink specials everyday. WHen checking in make sure and get a room with a view of the pool. The reason why is the Morraine(sp) water treatment plant is nearby, and the smell can be overwhelming at night. Don't eat anything from the buffet there...trust me,however, off the menu is usually ok.

Auger, his daughters boyfriend and I are planning on flying in tomorrow morning. Due to other scheduled events we'll be returning that evening but we'll at least be arriving in style :D

Just saw on the news a stunt pilot crashed and died today at the Dayton Airshow. What a horrible week for aviation.
WHIO-TV reported pilot Jim LeRoy of Billings, Montana, died on the way to the hospital after his S2S Bulldog biplane crashed at the end of a runway at Dayton International Airport in Ohio.
The plane was one of two making loop-the-loops with smoke trailing as part of Dayton's annual air show. It slammed into the runway across a field from spectators and caught fire.
A Blackhawk helicopter that was already at the airport transported LeRoy to the hospital, but he died en route, said Mark Carpenter, the airport's fire rescue manager.
The crowd stood stunned as the show was shut down for the day, witnesses said. The air show's general manager, Brenda Kerfoot, said the show would resume Sunday.

I was there when it happened. It was a Bulldog biplane that was part of a 2 plane act that did extremely low stunts (extremely stupid.). They were doing a extremely low half loops and on the third loop the yellow Bulldog did a tumble roll really fast (Too fast I thought) and basically he was too low to pull out. The biplane hit the runway tail first and the prop caught on the runway afterward. Causing it to cartwheel. Few mins ago I saw a video of the crash and when I saw the tail hit the runway I knew the pilot had no chance. He was alive when they evaculate him by Blackhawk chopper.
The officals canned the rest of the show due the NSTB investation. They'll offer the people who went today a free admission tomorrow if they show up with their ticket snub from today. I'll try to go there tomorrow cuz I'm very interested in seeing the 2 female thunderbird pilots perform.

Here you have some stupid AH seat jocky wannabe that went to see the "stupid stunts", as you put it, that a professional like Jim LeRoy perform for people like you and gave his life doing and you have the audacity to call it stupid. Shame on you, you ***** pixel pushing wannabe.
Get a ***** clue Falcon!! Jim LeRoy was one of the best of the best. Performing and flying in an unforgiving career flying a plane to the edge and back so dumb arses like you could walk away thrilled that you got to see an amazing show.
You ignorant mother fker. That guy gave his life performing for you. And you have the audacity to call it stupid. Jim LeRoy was the peak of aerobatic performance. You watched one of the greats meet his demise, unfortunately like many others before him, giving his all for you.
Professional Airshow aerobatics is the most risky entertainment, extream sport there is. What he did was not stupid, it was pure genius in an airplane. Have some respect even though you obviously have no capability to understand what you were watching and ignorant to think you have a clue enough to call what he did stupid.
Bow your *****g head in respect and shut the fk up.
Jim LeRoy was the best of the best, but his greatest talent wasn't in the air. It was sitting at the autograph line until the last person, child, adult, left connecting with people less ignorant than you and maybe sharing the dream that it is to fly the way he did.
Airshow aerobatics spares no one, the worst or the best. Maybe when you go to the show tomorrow you might understand what these people risk every weekend so that you can walk away thrilled and fulfilled and feel like your 20 bucks was well spent.
You may think I am being a little harsh but your indignant, ignorance and stupidity to make such a statement can not go unnoticed.
We lost a great hero, performer and man today. God speed Jim LeRoy. You were the best of the best.
And HT et-al if you edit this post shame on you. You guys of all people should know better.

Mars thank you for putting my thoughts into more polite words than I was capable of tonight. I cut loose a string of MFs and bottled up so much fury watching the ignorant masses trying to catch a glimpse of the aftermath of what was almost certainly a fatal crash. I won't repeat the things I heard today because they are not worthy of a response but I was set off tonight releasing a bit even amongst the folks at the gathering when we saw Falcon's post.
Thank you for using more class than I would have tonight and saving me the embarassment of actually following through with something foolish.
Jim LeRoy was within 3 feet of not having a scratch on him today. A huge error or massive fault it wasn't. He lived on the edges I dare not dare to entertain us and it doesn't take a big mistake to cause catastrophe. His airplane hit the ground with the nose level or even slightly up, left wing low and damn near made it out.

Sounds very entertaining, but I wonder if an "extreme" show can go from entertaining to just flat out dangerous. There are some in the business who feel that another collision is a real possibility, either between the aircraft or involving the ground acts. Also it will be interesting to see how many shows could afford such an act with todays limited resources.

I?d like to share my view on the post by aerojet49. First of all, a collision is always a possibility whether it is with the ground or with another vehicle and the risk factor increases with an increased number of vehicles/elements in the show; it?s a simple matter of mathematics. I wish I could say it wasn?t so, but as an engineer, and a realist, I?d be lying. We all try to minimize the risk by proper choreography, practice, and preparation. We try to learn from our mistakes as well as the mistakes of others. The reality is harsh? in our business, there will always be more accidents. We try our best to not let it happen, but we all know that at the end of the season, we will sit down at the ICAS convention and watch a video paying tribute to our comrades that were lost that year, and our hearts will break, again. The only solution is to keep the airplanes in the hanger, but that?s not why we build airplanes, particularly airshow airplanes.
I think the X-Team charter is clear by now to everyone ? we want to increase the quality of entertainment at airshows. We also want to expand the public awareness of airshows ? too many people know nothing about what airshows are all about. We feel that this is a path towards increasing attendance and bringing more attention to airshows and aviation in general. There is risk involved with anything, and when you try new things in a business such as ours, there will always be critics. We try to listen to them - sometimes there is merit and sometimes not. If there are people in the business that are truly concerned about X-Team I would be happy to discuss their concerns with them, to include our methods and procedures. Everyone in the business knows how to contact me. All X-Team pilots fly very aggressively; consequently, we?ve all heard ?you?re going to kill yourself? over and over and over. You get numb to it after a while, but you have to be careful not to brush off a legitimate concern, and you have to acknowledge the risk and know that in the end, they might be right. No matter how well you prepare and practice there are no guarantees.

Yea it was a bummer... but no use slinging insults about it. I was there and had a blast despite the very sad incident. Had fun and got to meet a lot of class act Aces High pilots.
SHAWK was an excellent and courteous host and everyone else I met was just as excellent.

I doubt falcon meant to offend anyone, but in this sort of situation, typing what you *think* happened is just asking for trouble.

I wasn't there for the full experience but it was a joy to meet some of the faces behind the names. Flew in on Saturday morning with AKAuger and his daughers boyfriend. Saw some great flying from Skip Stewart and Jim LeRoy's last solo performance; both of whom are truly awe inspiring. Intense demos from the Harrier, F15 as well as F18. Hertiage flights included an F18 Hornet along with an FG1 Corsair. The Air Force memorial flight included 3 rock star airplanes. P-51 flying lead with an F4 Phantom and F15 Eagle on its wing. It was a true thrill to see the Phantom fly again!
After the early ending to the airshow AKAuger and I beat feet back to Columbus to drop off his guest only to return to SHawks house later that evening. SHawk is a damn fine host for anyone who gets to stay in the Dayton area and he more than lived up to his reputation. There were some AH items that were handed out as well as a great keepsake for all who attended:
Posters (provided by SHawk...THANK YOU!) signed by all of those in attendance. I was lucky enough to have an A-26 Invader poster signed by those who showed up. I hate to start listing names for fear of forgetting someone but I think a solid 20 folks were there at one point or another.
Today we toured the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base before parting ways back to our normal lives. It was a good time and I'm looking forward to the next little gathering of nerds...err...AH players that might happen.

Well we just got back and *lol Angel forgot her purse at the arbys in tipp city, not to mention all 12 or so credit cards. Anyway the nightmare has a happy ending as Shawk saves the day again by going to pick it up and spare my credit. I would like to thank Shawk for everything I met some great people and cant wait to do this again you all know who you are I have a slight bit of respect for the Bish now (not alot) but a little the rooks are the rooks what else can I say and Bearkats and Weasley aka Jokester you have a home with the Knights on my squad if you want it.
Anyone who didnt go this year and has a chance to go the the next gathering I highly recommend it, well that is all or I will just keep going.

Oh and one last thing before I go, It is now a squad order to find and blast mr. falcon out of the sky every chance we get and dont even think FALCON if you read this that you will get a salute because it will never happen sir.

I'm not going to get into the "bad thing" that happened at the show, but I will say I just got back, and I had a great time. I was lucky enough not only to attend and meet everyone down there, but I also had a few of my squaddies show up as well. Was pretty nice spending the weekend with the guys you talk to everyday, but never get to see.
Was definitely different going down there and puting faces with names. In fact, I think the most common thing said this weekend "You're not what I imagined" or "I thought you were older" lol Was pretty fun.
SHawk, as always, you were great. Same old dora dweeb that I remember from the first time I was down there with ya, just a little older :) Thank you for your hospitality, was greatly appreciated.
For all those who came, was definitely nice to see you, and hope to do it again next year.

First, I just want to say one thing to Falcon, have a little respect for the dead. What if his family were to read your post? Think about how you would feel before you so freely give your opinion.
I just want to tell everyone that it was an incredible experience getting to meet everyone. I have not been on the game for very long, and the advise that was given me this weekend is invaluable! It will be nice to have a face to go with the names of those that will inevitibly shoot me down :lol I look forward to next years get together, and hope that even more will be able to attend.
As for the Tipp City incident Swoop mentioned, what can I say, the adventure never ends... SHawk, thank you, thank you, thank you! I appreciate your saving my butt. You kindness is truly appreciated. And a big thanks to you and your wife for being wonderfull hosts.

Let me start my rant by saying the idea of getting together last year was great!! I planned it for a year ... you know stained the deck, painted a few rooms etc. Nghtmare and I invited any AH member who was able to make it ... how scary is that? We had a week of events planned and a squad CO/my best friend badger8/Dan help make it a great turn out. SHawk was wonderful with sharing his jet skis and we had plenty of time on the lake and beautiful weather to use them and everyone who made it was respectful and pleasant. It is not easy to pull together with emails and times and coordinating schedules but, check it out (if you haven't seen already) how cool it was ....

The air show event was tragic as anytime something like that happens. His family and friends have been in my thoughts since it happened. Gat76/Chris and his gf had never been to an air show before and I felt terrible I had to bring them to one that ended as it did. Along with them missing their original flight, my basement flooding the night before they came out, and a jeep problem last night taking the last squaddie home :( not all the events I planned but, all is well, Gat and gf made it home, basement is now drying and squaddie got home!! It all worked out and I am a firm believer in ... things happen for a reason so I don't ask why I respect the choice and make the best of everyday!!
It was great to meet all the peeps I did and that is what this weekend was ALL about. What a great comradery!!

To everyone that attended, it was great to meet you all and I a whole lot of fun this weekend. The jet lag, lack of sleep, huge timezone difference and all that alcohol really hit me hard, yet I managed to make it out alive. It was great to actually hang with Robert Shaw, I only wish I could have at least taken a picture with him. The airshow was very cool and the A F Museum was like nothing I've ever seen before.
Betty, you did a great job and organizing this event for us. It was great to meet people that I've yet to fight in this game as well as learn about others Gaming history.
to all those that attened. It was also fun to really talk about this game, face to face with another person.
