why is a card like this so expensive, and what is it good for?

That is a workstation card, which is designed for OpenGL.  Workstation cards are meant to do high end rendering (usually 2048x2048 at 32/64bit color) at very high speeds.
They are not designed to handle the low end game type graphics.

ahh thanks, you talking about like game / graphic design, and CAD type stuff?

Actually, there is very little use for a game company to use that card.  CAD, movie production, and things of that nature would be better suited for that card.

well thank you for taking the time to answer this LOL. totally non- game related, i was just curious because i cam across this looking for a high end video card.
