Nexx, I didn't realize you were so close! I'm in Lakenheath (small village just north of Newmarket, but it's got the base there) at the moment, although in a couple months I'll be back in the States.
-
Hey MJ
Yeah, I'm about 70-80 miles from Mildenhall/Lakenheath, though it's only a 1hr 30min drive. How you enjoying it? You returning the states for good?
Have you been to Duxford yet? That must only be about 30 (?) miles from you. Also Hendon museum, North London, will be around 50-70 miles south of you?
-
It's been a good year, but yes, I'm going back for good in August to start pilot training. Who knows, I may end up over here again in a few years. My wife (AKAthena) and I did go down to the Duxford museum a while back, got some great pictures. I hadn't heard of the Hendon one, I'll have to check it out.
-
You must go to the RAF Museum Hendon before you go back. They've got some really good exhibits there which include:-
B17G, P51D, Typhoon, Beaufighter, Beaufort, Blenheim, Mosquito, Spitfires, Hurricanes, B25, Wellington, Lancaster, Battle, Defiant, parts of a Halifax, He111, Ju88, Ju87, Me110, Me109s, He162, Fw190, Short Sunderland (you can walk all the way thru), Lysander, V1, V2, Gladiator, CR42 Falco, Seagull, Anson, Hudson, Tempest II, plus many WW1 and post war/cold war jets such as F86, Meteor F8, EE Lightning, Tornado, Phantom, Buccaneer etc.
There's also RAF Museum Cosford as well. Aircraft include:-
Me262 (moving to Hendon late 2003), Me410, Ki100, Ki46, B24, Catalina, Mosquito, Storch, Meteors, Spitfire, Hurricane, Ju52, P47, Yokosuka MXY7 Ohka plus many British experimental jets and also loads of missiles/rockets from WW2 onwards (a lot of German missiles/rockets especially).
Check the websites out at: http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/

Hi Athena, if you go to both the links below you should be able to find directions.
Duxford http://www.iwm.org.uk/duxford/index.htm
Duxford is just south of Cambridge, so if you travel west briefly on the A14, then A11 and then A505 you'll get straight there - if you're only north of Newmarket then it only looks a 25 mile drive ( only a 30-45 min drive?)
Hendon & Cosford http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/
Cosford is on the west side of Birmingham, near to Telford so it's quite a drive and a little awkward. If you travel all the way west on the A14 until it joins on the M6. Follow the M6 on the north Birmingham ring-road and then join the M54 at Junc 10A. RAF Cosford is just off Junc 3 - follow signs for museum. It's probably about 150 miles.
Hendon is similar route to Duxford. Follow A14, A11, M11 (south) until M25 London ringroad - take M25 West to Junc 23 and take A1 South into London. Hendon is about 8-10 miles south. Overall it's about 80-85 miles.
Incidently, if you carry on the M25 for one more Junction (Junc 22) you will find the De Havilland Aircraft Heritage Centre http://www.dehavillandmuseum.co.uk/index2.html and http://www.aeroflight.co.uk/mus/uk/dehav/mosqmus.htm
Here's you'll find the Mosquito prototype, a couple more Mossies and other DH aircraft. This is actually where the prototype was built!
Enjoy!

that map of England is completely wrong on the SE coast by the thames.
Essex is missplaced and theres no mention of East Anglia on the coast by the bulge(above thames estuary)
Im not too good at remembering the names of all the counties but they are to my memory a lot larger than the tiny ones on that map.

Hazed, if you're referring to the map I posted then you may have missed my follow up thread (above).
East Anglia is only a region, not a county.
Anyway, I posted to show where I live, which still exists, and besides this map would have been valid in WW2 :)
