Title: Which cable modem to buy
Post by: bashwolf on February 19, 2002, 02:29:30 PM
Hello,

Soon I believe I will be qualify for cable internet after 5-6 years of waiting (finger crossed).  Comcast took over our cable and will start rolling (hopefully  like next 2 weeks).  I just like to know which modem to get for gaming USB, serial, which brand etc.

Thank You

Bash

why buy a cable modem? Here in Tampa one is issued to you when you sign up for the service along with a 3Com NIC. Time Warner is responsible for it and replaces it if it goes out or gets flaky. They do not offer a discount for cable modem owners as it is a bigger headache than if you had their modem..

Never understood the cable modem ads, almost makes it out that all you have to do is buy the modem and you'll get "free" monthly service, which ain't the case.

if you buy, don't buy USB. Use a NIC

Suppose it depends on the company.  Cox used to charge me $15 a month for modem rental.  Having your own could save you money in the long run, however, check around and see if there are any plans on changing the modem type.  I never bought one because the guy that came over and installed my cable warned me about a change to the Doxs or DOCS or something or another that was (is) to be the new standard.  Time-Warner however has the best deal I've ever run in to.  (for what it's worth, I heard the Toshiba cable modems were garbage, much like thier computers were lol)
