There are very few goon captures relative to m3 captures. What if we tried a tour with 20 troops in a goon? It could supposedly carry 28 paratroopers vs 12 in the m-3 (according to wikipedia). I think it might change the fight dynamic and make things interesting. Can always change it back if it is too destabilizing.

If I remember right Hitech once said if he ever raised the number of troops the goon could carry he would raise the the number of troops to capture to match.
I understand the reason why you would want the change, but it is much easier to hide/sneak in an M3. Goons are too easy to find and shoot down so players dont use them.

This!

Thats precisely why I think giving a goon the edge by giving them more troops would get more people to use them!
-
would also help deter against one man M3 caps in the middle of the night
-
A better idea would be to lower the M3 troop number to 5 making two M3s needed vs a single goon.

I’d go for that.

Or 9 troops. Then you could actually use jeeps for captures!

Why encourage even more people to take GV's?
Honestly, letting a Goon carry 28 troops while making no other changes is probably the best plan for increasing goon usage.

goon carrying 10 or 28 doesn't matter if they can't make it to town. we lost 4 or 5 yesterday trying to take a base, we all came at same time from different directions.
i have stopped base takings with 3 or 4 fighters around just by killing the goon then climb back up and wait for the next.
goons are slow easy targets, can't change that.

You can use jeeps for captures. Just take four jeeps. If one gets killed, make a second run. If you are fast, you should be able to make a second run with a jeep and still get troops to the map room in time for the capture.
If I remember correctly, each trooper counts as damage against the map room. It has a repair time, just like any other item, but I don't remember the repair time.

i believe it's still the case where if you drop troops and you up again, your troops die.

Yeah, but how else do you promote the use of Goons, or discourage the use of half-tracks? It needs to be done in such a way that the solution is not just to send more players in half-tracks. That would be counterproductive.

I'm pretty sure once they're in, they're counted. At the end of the day, they're like a bomb. Once they "hit" the maproom, you can reup with no effect on them. If memory serves we speculated troops repair over about 7.5 minutes if they follow the same rules as bombs, but I don't know that anyone's ever confirmed it.

only way you gonna discourage use of m3s is if you get rid of spawns. think about it, 5 minute drive in m3 vs 15 to 20 in goon.
m3s can hide, and are harder to kill. goons have nowhere to hide and are big targets.
anyway, good luck trying to fix this "problem".

Part of the problem with goons is the map shows everything around you regardless of radar being up or down with the newer player distance dar. At some point a goon is going to have to avoid trees and climb with elevation changes, they pop on the map for a second and that's it for them. you could get 5 to 8 m3's with 5 troops there before you get a goon with 28 troops.

Yes ny thought is giving the goon one area where it has an advantage over an m3 would at least increase their usage to a certain degree. Right now it has no real advantage.
-
A while back hitech experimented by removing m3s for a bit. A lot of people complained but I think making some changes every tour and even changing back keeps the gameplay or tactics from becoming too stale.
Imagine some tours where you could take a town with 5 troops. Or others that require 20. Or changing the amount of town damage required to WF. New challenges. And much easier than creating new maps.
-
Why would having 28 troops in one goon be an advantage? You only need to 10, your still slow, and your still a big easy target

It would not be a huge change, but at least with more troops you have a better chance of making your mission count if you make it to a drop point, since only 10 of the 28 need to make it to the map room.

I totally get it, some changes would be good if not great.

Because goons are easy to pick off before they release troops and all it takes is killing 1 troop to save a base if they do get to their drop point. This way if they make it to their drop point they have a good chance of taking a field even with aircraft strafing troops.
Would be a change. Doesn't have to be permanent. But could make things interesting.
-
Biggest complaint I could see about m3 having it dropped below 10 is people yelling about not getting credit for a capture lol
-
Proper planning will get a goon in.

I don't see much of that any more, like none. More often than not it's "town is white flagged bring troops!!", if an M3 doesn't get the capture then yelling about why no one brought troops or the goon is dead.
-
I just think it would be fun to see more troops falling in the sky with defenders scrambling to kill them. Right now its too easy to defend against a goon take.

only if they are running...
If a landed goon didn't show up as a big sitting duck Icon on dot dar..that would be helpful....

yup so many ways to travel to town from the nearest base. also Goons are slow so time is critical. rarely do you get a second try unless you get shot down early in flight.

Since the proximity dar thing came along you can't hide a goon. Before you could hide it under a tree and people would fly right over you without seeing it. I think if you turned off the proximity dar for planes on the ground or at very low alt people might start sneaking goons in again.

Real goon carried 28 paratroopers so why not in game? BTW, 28 combat equipped troops is a really packed bird, we were loading 20 slick jumpers on and that was crowded. Also, you'll need to up the base take requirement for troops because that is normally a Battalion (+) objective in the real world.

That's a very good question.
Let's wait for the 'expert's' to give us an answer.
Then they can tell you why this borked radar is better than the original.

Well, I'm not an expert and all (in face of crudely attempted snark) but ...
Adding more troops per drop is a bigger frame rate hit.
Having said that, since it wasn't unusual to see three goons drop on the same town back when goons were popular - if AHIII and the average player's machine can handle three sticks of 28 (84 objects) versus three sticks of ten (30 objects) *ShruG* then why not?
-
Why not make the town three buildings and one gun.

seen 7 goons drop on town, it isnt that big of a frame rate. more like hitech said if he increased the number of troops, it will match the number of troops to take town. so m3's troops will sit on top of each other.

I think it would be a cool experiment.

Increase captures to 100 troops. Make it more realistic.

Why not just turn off the dar/icon for planes on the ground?

dont allow you to bring a blender in the p38, after all ww2 pilots didnt have one. that would be realistic.

well my friend i may be wrong but i think a C47 can only carry 12 troops and it only takes 10 to capture a base. although you have to use a goon to capture a base with no spawn in's but with currant radar set up goons are easily spotted towns or V-bases

well my bad maybe--if our goon is a C47B-DK it carries 28 troops.
HiTech which C47 do we have-Skytrain/Dakota

think number of troops is arbitrary. if he increases number of troops then he'll up number of troops needed to take map room.

He should test the max number of spawned objects before our collective computers cry. Make it a million per goon. :D
