Title: 418 Squadron, RCAF skins request
Post by: Karnak on August 18, 2011, 08:44:00 PM
I have been looking for online images, but no luck.  I will make Scherf aware of this thread as well and get some photo evidence.

What I am looking for in a skin for the Mosquito Mk VI and one for the Boston Mk III for 418 Squadron.  They started in Boston IIIs and then switched to Mosquito VIs, ending up as the top scoring Canadian squadron.  They were also one of the few Mosquito VI squadrons authorized to run Day Ranger operations.

I know the Boston Mk III skin may have to wait until it is redone by HTC.

Thanks.

Either 'Black Rufe' or "Hairless Joe' would be good choices.  Not sure if there are stretching issues on the Mossie's nose that would limit either of them.

I can do better scans if any one needs them.

Megladon,

Yes, those are much clearer.

Thank you.

Any skinners interested in doing one of those?  Black Rufe would be my preference, but I am not picky.

Here is another, flown by Flight Lieutenant Lou Luma when he downed an Me410 nightfighter. He was the only American to ace in the Mosquito.

Since we don't have any black bellied MKVI's IN GAME I kind have always liked this plane.

I had planned on doing a 418 skin, just haven't had the time to do any skinning in AH2 lately, it's been all MSFS and DCS: A-10C. Really looking forward to the finalized P-40s though, will probably pull me back in. If nobody jumps on this one I'll end up doing it eventually, just won't be in the next week or so ;)

Morning All,

The best images I have of 418 Squadron Bostons are of this machine, in overall black, markings duplicated on port side, to judge by some small shots of other aircraft (serial number, squadron codes and "Ottawa Ontario" in dull red):

Most of the best-known 418 Squadron Mossies have already been mentioned in this thread - my favourite is TH-J, City of Edmonton, the one in the pic above of Sid Seid and his dawg Mostitch.

There were however many more unique noseart examples, mostly characters from the L'il Abner strip. Mark Proulx is so far as I know still planning a 418 Squadron book, and I believe it's his intention to link as many of the noseart craft to serial numbers, provide operational histories, etc. Not sure of publication date, he was still trying to scrounge photos last time I asked him.

Here's another view of TH-J. I am all but certain the date given is incorrect - Sid Seid didn't join 418 Sqn until after D-Day, and the craft appears with all the kill markings in a group shot in October 1944. I'm also certain the serial number is incorrect - NT115 didn't appear in the Squadron Operations Record Book until January 1845, when 418 had already been transferred away from Intruder duties to 2nd TAF. I believe the serial should be as in the decal graphics above. See also above re: Mark Proulx's book.

Two points of order, Mr Speaker. First, I wonder whether or not the original noseart is going to interfere with the area of the AH skin reserved for AH squad logos. Second, the swastis will have to be changed to crosses - Swastis sind verboten, mein Lieber.

Think I have a close-up of the squadron logo, will try to post.

Here 'tis:

A black overall Boston Mk III would probably be received pretty warmly in AH.  People seem to like black skins.

I'm all for adding a 418 Sqn skin for the Mossie. I'm just not sure if it is worth putting a skin up on the outdated Boston III. It is one of the few planes left in AH that needs a facelift.

I am not sure, but a black bellied and grey bellied 418 Squadron Mossie VI might be ok.  It isn't like the Mossie is anywhere near its limit on skins, nor are they flooding in.

I'll revisit the Boston Mk III when it gets updated.

I was fortunate enough to fly for 418 Squadron during the "Enemy Coast Ahead" scenario. It was one of the highlights of my time with Aces High.

We didn't have a proper skin at the time and had to resort to a substitute.

I certainly hope one of you talented types can make this happen.

Hello all,

Haven't been playing AH2 for a while but I lurk the forums now and again. Greebo, please go ahead and work your magic on the Mossie, I did indeed call dibs on a 418 skin but it's unfair to sit on it if I really don't know when I'll get around to it. Been into other sims lately and am currently doing some post-war RCAF Mustangs for DCS, for fun. Learning all about colour spec maps and bump mapping. Good to see this stuff making it into AH2!

So no City of Edmonton for me but I can offer a Winnipeg and a Vancouver...

No. 402 RCAF "City of Winnipeg" Sqn.

All-over aluminum lacquer finish, standard post war RCAF markings

No. 442 RCAF "City of Vancouver" Sqn.

Also did some fictional Canadian A-10C schemes ;)

Nice P-51 skins Jocko. OK, I'll do a 418 Mossie as soon as I get time. I would like to do one with black undersides, preferably one with not only a photo of the noseart but also one showing the whole aircraft. I don't like using profiles as the primary source if I can help it.

They do seem to be a bit thin on the ground. If I can't find one I'll just go with a noseart photo and profile combo.

I've found a slightly less cropped version of the Moonbeam McSwine photo that shows more of the rear fuselage. So unless better info comes up I will go with that aircraft.

Thanks but what I'm looking for is actual WW2 photos. Judging from comments I've read on modelling forums, it seems 418 photos are hard to find. Profiles are often just educated guesses by the artist and I can do that myself if need be. Photos are the only real proof.

The less cropped photo of Moonbeam McSwine I found is here (http://www.hyperscale.com/2010/reviews/decals/aviaeology24005reviewmp_1.htm). It shows a bit more of the rear fuselage which proves it had a straight camo demarcation line there. That's the main thing I was looking for, as it could have been done wavy as on the TH-J profile posted earlier in this thread.

It has been noted that photographers focused on the noseart of 418 Mossies, usually to the apparent exclusion of anything else.

Is it me or does the mossy have the same paint setup as every other mossy besides nose art?

I really don't see a difference from the 418th squadron in any books or photos I have.
Title: Re: 418 Squadron, RCAF skins request

The disruptive camo schemes the RAF used on all their planes were factory-applied to a pattern supplied by the war ministry. So if you see a photo of a Mosquito or any RAF plane in a disruptive scheme, you can usually use that known template to skin the rest of the aircraft fairly accurately. The exceptions were aircraft that were repainted in the field.

This might be helpful.

The second photo is useful as it gives the size and position of the squadron codes. The first one is too low res to be of much help, except is does show that straight demarcation lines were the norm.

We don't have a Mossie VI with the disruptive camo on top and black on the bottom.  Either 'Moonshine McSwine' or 'City of Edmonton' will add that combination.

They both also have a lot of kill markers, which is different.

'Lou' Louma's aircraft, only American to ace in the Mossie.
