so, after i got my win98SE in me hot little hand, shood i do any prep to my computor b4 hand???
iv got too many people using the system for a 'reformat HD, start from scratch' method.
also, shood i wait till i GET my nu ultra 770 and CUmine cpu/MB b4 upping to 98???
like get the parts, install the nu ones get rid of the old ones and then install the drivers to my old win95B OS. run it for a time to check for stability and then up to win98???

Save everything you could possibly regret, later on, losing.
For Aces High save your custom gunsights, sounds and your [settings] directory - that one will save you from redoing your views all over again.
Save your bookmarks, email folders, etc to a zip drive or CDrom if you can.

ok, on that que ill make a mirror copy of my
current HD onto another HD, so ill have 2 identical HDs. ill upgrade the one, test it for stability, if it works, im great. if some files get corrupt, i can get them from the twin HD that will now be IDed as drive D...

That sounds like the best way to go. I have back ups of just about anything to ease any reformat I may have to do. Make sure you have a good boot disk and test it before you do anything. Download ALL the drivers you need before hand. DX7a too!
I'm still currently on Win95B. I'm contemplating a reformat and reinstall but I'm not sure if I want to stay with Win95B with USB or Win98SE. I'm afraif of hosing my system to be honest. Time with the PC is a commodity with me and I'd rather spend it flying than trying out new drivers and such to get it working again. Of course it could also be a snap with no problems. Thats's the gamble....

75% of folks have problems with "upgrading" 95 to 98. 5% of folks have problems when installing 98' from a clean hard drive.
I would highly suggest to get a tape back up, back everything you want to save on tape, reformat, and re-install with Win98.

Q's Guide to upgrading your OS

1) Create a directory called Install. In this directory place all your hardware drivers, patches, DirectWhatever, utilities, anything you're going to be reinstalling apart from applications that come on CD. Do make it a nice, organised tree structure.
2) Copy the contents of your W98SE CD to a directory eg c:\W98SE
3) Reboot to Command Prompt.
4) Rename your Windows Directory (eg to W95.Old) This is most important as if everything goes wrong, you can just un-rename this directory.
5) Change directory to your new OS directory and run Setup. Setup may default to your old Windows directory, so check this and amend if necessary.
6) Reinstall all your old drivers, utilities, etc.

QTS...if i copy all from the 98CD to the HD in the directory u state, wont the upgrade program look for a CD for the setup programs, find one not installed and ask, 'please insert win98 upgrade cd in drive' or please insert win95 CD in drive for comfirmation b4 upgrade'???

No, I'm saying get the full version of 98, and start from ground zero with 98 only, unless you're familiar with all the 'quirks' that are associated with upgrading.

You don't need the full version, you can do a clean install with the upgrade disk. (Done it many times.) All you need is either a win95 CD, or an old windows 3.1 disk 1. Like others have said, at least copy the win98 directory to the HD and run setup from there if you choose the clean install method. This is the best way to insure success. (If you use the upgrade disk you will be prompted to insert an old windows disk to confirm eligibility for the upgrade version. Other than that, there is NO difference at all between the upgrade and full version. Save yourself some money, get the upgrade.) Just save all your important stuff onto a cd-r or something and you won't lose a thing.

Done this many times.... upgradeing an existing system may, or may not work... but within a couple of weeks it will die... start with new drive.. my old c: drive becomes my D: drive so everything is there.. someone came out with a good suggestion...
1) after fdisking and formating new disk make a folder on c:\wincab (I think it was) copy cd file"win98" over to it and it will stop asking for the cd everytime you change something...

One other thing, and I hope this is not a dead thread.
After you install your base OS, get your Internet connection up and running and go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com) and install all the updates ffrom that site, BEFORE you install your video drivers.
Also, you can save some time by installing VM Update and the MS 5.01 IE update before hitting the rest of the critical updates.
And on the critical updates, be sure to load theem by using the oldest date first. Some of the updates require and expect the older updates to be in place. NOTE: Not all the files have dates, but the ones that do have dates, have them for a reason.
After you have all the critical updates done, get the recommended updates, such as DX7.0a and get them installed.
After that, then install your video drivers, then go to the rest of the web sites for updates to your peripheral drivers.
It is a rather long process, but the end result will be a more stable platform for you.

too late skuzzy, i went to the update site and selected ALL of the critical updates that wood seem pertnent to my situation and DLd them and installed them, or actually let windows do that...
r u saying i shood have DLd the updates one at a time, the oldest to the youngest??

Yes, whenever there are dates on the updates, and the updates appear to be for the same type of thing, it is best to update in the order of date.
Somtimes the updates contain files the next update depends on being there, especially when it is a security update.
And some of the updates do not check to see if the update previous to it is in place.
That is why there are dates on some of the files, not all of them. The ones with no dates do not depend on previous updates.
Just a little tidbit MS does not mention.
Sometimes the order is not intutitive either. For instance, the IE 5.x is on the "recommended" list, but when you install it, a whole new set of critical updates have to be done immediately after that. So I install it first, then move to the VM update (in the critical updates), then start the critical updates.

Just a tip for those who have the FULL version of Windows 98SE and want to use it for an upgrade.
Normally you cant use the full version for an upgrade (it wont let you). But if you go to the Windows directory and rename WIN.COM (say to WIN.CO_ or OLDWIN.COM) you can then do the upgrade as if you had the upgrade version of Windows 98SE. The full version looks for this file to determine if a working version of Windows is already installed.
