Title: New/ returning player looking for info please
Post by: Leptic on February 25, 2023, 08:52:19 PM
Hello, I was hoping to get some info. My father was an aircraft mechanic and pilot who introduced me to this game, and his pride and joy was the renovation of the Memphis bell b-17 bomber. When I was 7 I ran up and down that plane for months, now 36. He praised the game for its life like realness and I loved playing with him in my 20s with what feels like a lifetime ago now (early 2000’s.) now with my own BA computer I find myself today thinking it’s time to go back, aces high was some of my best gaming memories. Upon doing some research I’m finding a lot of unsettling things. First of all days of 1000 players clouding the sky’s on a titanic Tuesday with gunfire and smoke seem all but a distant memory, steam says the player base is like 17 people on at once 😢 I read close to 100 some days but I can’t find any player base stats that support that, anywhere. I also read the customer service is horrible, not that I plan on needing any customer assistance. Before I go buy a nice joystick and take to the sky’s I’d like some clarification, is this game dead? Dead into comparison to what it used to be, are there hackers and immature admins ruining the game, mods that ban chat because they know not what responsible admining entails. I would love some answers, I’m a dedicated gamer who will play a game forever and deadly behind the stick. Thank you for taking the time of you do.

US Prime time peak numbers are between 90-140 players depending on day. Hacking is basically a non issue (there's lot of talks in game, but for some odd reason the films never show up as promised  ;))

Thank you lusche for taking the time to reply, I’m happy to hear that on a peak hours there’s still a sustainable amount of players to create a fulfilling dog fight and war scenari. can you or anyone else elaborate on the community’s toxicity or admin misconduct that I read about. I mean not to slander, just feeling some lackluster today when the nostalgia of my past doesn’t meet the hopes of my future. I’m sure some of the planes featured in the game could say the same :) I’d like to return to aces high as a permanent attendee, my fathers call sign was fester1, at that time a fester already existed and was well known in the community. I’d be disappointed if I couldn’t get into a good dog fight at any hour with equally skill matched players. Returning / new/ gaming skilled players such as myself.

Hey Leptic,

I don't think the community is all that toxic.   There are folks who push the boundaries of behavior on the AH bulletin boards and in game, and get disciplined for it.  These are probably the people who complain about the admins.

AH is far from dead, but it is pretty much down to a one man shop now, so there is no dedicated customer service person.   I've found the community itself is always helpful with questions whether you're a newbie or a returning player needing a refresher.  Both game play and hardware questions are answered here on this board.

Not sure which time zone your in, but Steam's numbers must be off.  As Lusche said prime time US evenings most often are well above 100 in the main or "melee" arena.  The fights are still good here, and good sticks are always welcome.

C'mon back - your favorite plane is in the hangar waiting for you.

And <S> to your Dad for his work on Memphis Belle!

My advice is do not engage in madness. For me, I never tune to 200 or any “all” chats and vox. Country, squad and room is it. So whatever nonsense or drama is going on in the main arena, free-for-all chat/vox channels… I really don’t care. :rock :airplane:

Also, nobody is cheating rather there is an under appreciation of experience and muscle memory.   :old: :joystick:

Thank you everyone for the feedback, my hopefully last question is; there was mention of only being only one map now and an arena. Is this main map still a classic scenario of rooks, vrs bishops, vrs knights? With carriers attacking basses? It was immensely fun to furball and attack basses. With coordinating teams planning attack runs, chat lighting up for defense and counter pushes. That type of gameplay and multiplayer experience was unparalleled even to my standards today. And I’ve played a lot of games in these many years.

Numerous maps with new ones added very recently..

3 country fighting

AH is the best online multiplayer a2a ww2 sim imo

Try MNM on Monday nights at 8pm est for furball action

Welcome back!

Leptic, there are a lot of people who love to complain, and love to tear down the game.  Don't listen to them.  This is still the best game of it's type around.  There are fewer people around, but it is still the game you came to know and love so long ago.

One of the reasons there are fewer people is that too many believe the poison that you listed in your original post.  Come in and check it out for yourself.

Its even better than it was.  We have Battleship groups now also, and you can man the big guns and engage in duels with shore batteries, pound towns and bases with 16" shells in prep for amphibious troop landings.

We have a good assortment of ground vehicles too - Jeeps, tanks, tank destroyers, troop carriers, etc - so bases can be captured by ground forces also, not just airborne paratroopers.   You get in these vehicles and control them just like you would an aircraft - they are not AI units.   Tank battles can be an enjoyable break from air combat, and combined ground assaults with air support is a lot of fun.

Number of players appears to be climbing recently too.  C'mon back

On my way to get a joystick and join the fight. Eager and excited, with alot of anticipation. Thank you everyone for the input. I understand a lot of old timers play this game, what millennials call dinosaurs lol. I’m hopeful that before I dedicate years of my life playing, and investing into the game financially, I will see a thriving adaptive community keeping up with the times. I have played so many games over the years and have never experienced an adrenaline inducing game like AH. Getting a kill or 2 and landing the plane successfully would leave me shaking with adrenaline and need to take a moment to recoup. I assure you there is no other games like that out there. I’ve played them all. I would love to see this game return to its glory and be part of that cause. My call sign will be leptic, I’m sure you’ll be shooting me down alot as I relearn to fight, but give it some time and I promise you’ll get a check 6 and see me :)

Hi Leptic!

Welcome back, I think you will have a great time returning. Numbers are indeed not as high as they use to be but there is still a lot going on. Get yourself a squad and start shooting us down :airplane:

Hope to see you in the unfriendly skies <S>

5 retail stores and I ended up having to use Amazon to get the joystick model I wanted. Hopefully by Wednesday I’ll be joining the team. Looking forward to seeing everyone in the Frey. I’m contemplating streaming content to my friends when I go live. Can’t wait.

I often stream to my friends as well on Discord. It even makes the game more enjoyable for me with them looking in awe. Hehe. We had the TOC event yesterday and there was a scenario running this month that concluded yesterday. They enjoy watching these the most. If your are on the American timezone FSO is a great event as well. I recommend it :aok

You also made me interested in what kind of stick you got!

Leptic with a killer PC like that you may want to try VR once you get settled in again.   AH has a very good implementation of VR.

Several next gen headsets coming out looking real promising, and the release of new headsets should drive pricing down on the previous generation headsets.   Consensus here I think is the HP Reverb G2 is best performance for the $, and the Quest 2 is solid build, with better software experience.  Pico Neo 4 definitely worth a look too.

I returned about a week ago, and I wouldn't say the game is dead. I found some friends who are still around from 10 years ago. Overall my focus is just trying to get back into the swing of things. Although the numbers aren't like they were , I still find the experience to be worth it. My favorite part about this community is the knowledge. It feels good finding a website with articles from 98/99 to help you improve today. Have you seen some of the old pilot training videos on youtube? Pull out a notebook. Immerse yourself in pilot training. It feels better flying someone's wing and helping them land some victories. I mentioned last night to a buddy while in vr ," man , we came along way from modification buttons and hat switches!!!" YEE HAW Im happy to be back. Even if the Aces of Aces High are hunting me down. <S>
