Title: Throttle just died....recommendations?
Post by: DaddyAce on November 30, 2020, 09:04:52 PM
After years of great service my trusty old CH Pro Throttle USB just apparently went belly-up.  No lights, Windows does not see it, tried the usual reboots, different USB port, no more signs of life.

So now I'm looking for something to replace it.  Would love to replace it with another like it, but as many have noted on these boards CH seems to no longer produce a good product.   Took a quick look at Virpil & VKB, looks lke great stuff but expensive and overly complex for my needs as Aces High is the only game I play, and I have a great stick already.  SO I'm hoping for a decent throttle similar to my old CH pro, and suggestions?  Thanks in advance for your thoughts!   :salute

Open it up and check the connections. Seriously. It's not like you have to worry about the warranty at this point! Maybe a connector on the PCB just came loose. Or a wire off the pot. Could be something that silly. They usually don't fail like that. I haven't looked into a throttle. I'm still using my pro throttle too, hoping it holds out til VKB finally comes out with theirs. They only announced it 3 years ago! So... In two weeks prolly?

Thank you Drano.  Well certainly worth a try...looks like it's not made to come apart, looks solidly glued together, but you're right Drano, nothing to lose at this point.  I was also just browsing for replacement options and so far the only other throttle I've found that seems reasonable at first glance (non-Virpi or VKB) is the Thrustmaster TWCS.

Nah, it has I think at least four Phillips (#1) screws that hold the base on. They're under the rubber feet in the corners. Just pry them off.

Cool, was wondering about that, thank you again Drano!

It can be something as simple as the USB cord. There's four colour coded wires inside, you can easily get a replacement by getting a USB extension or A/B (printer etc) cord and cut the other end off.

There are 5 screws on mine. 4 are visible, not under the feet in my case, and the 5th is under the warranty sticker. Just poke around in the middle of the sticker until you feel the depression of the screw hole.

oops, thought we were talking about the Joystick. nm

Thanks for the tips Drano, Bizman & Easy; will have to take it apart and see what I can find.

Eagler, last night when I would otherwise have had a bit of AH time, I was online reviewing throttle options, and it looked like that throttle was the best option....bad news is it looks like everyone is currently out of stock on that rascal...

I ordered an X52 Pro throttle from eBay some months ago - works fine.  $45 if I remember right.  That might be an option for you, if you don't mind buying used off eBay.

Okay, opened it up, easy to pry off the rubber feet, 4 screws in the case of my throttle.  There was a broken wire.  Dug out  my  solderless connector kit, and a couple of small cable ties to keep things neat in there, and am now back in business with my trusty ol CH Throttle.  Thanks again all for the help!   :salute      :airplane:

While I had mine open the last time I added a piece of velco to the slide base and now my throttle handle has some tension as I slide it back and forth  :)

Great idea as it is too lose from the factory. Moves way too easily.

If you have a CH stick and find the springs too loose, you can wrap a rubber band around the base and gimble to stiffen up the tension.

Do you have a rubber band around your gimbles ack ack?

Good idea Fugi.  I don't have any rubber cement at home so have not yet replaced the rubber feet, still easy to open it back up, thanks!

Wow, thanks for your generous offer Clu!  AM  hoping this thing will continue to perform well enough, but if not nice to have other options!

I got a sticky rubber pad you'd use for putting a cell phone on the dash of your car. From either Amazon or eBay I forget which. Been a while. It's like four inches square. Really grippy but it doesn't use glue. Once you get it where you want it you really have to give it a good strong tug to get it back loose again. I think it works way better than the rubber feet. The throttle doesn't weigh much anyway and I found I was shoving the whole thing around. No more!

I like that idea, going to have to try it Drano.  I have the  sam4e issue with this light throttle, sometimes I have it  sliding off my desk.

A quick fix.... wet your finger with coca cola then rub it on the bottom of the rubber feet. They stay where you put it then. Works for throttle and pedals too.

You don't need to put soda on your fingers, just rub the rubber feet.

Clean rubber feet are better than dirty ones for sure. Coke just makes them extra sticky.

Glad you are back up and running with your CH Pro Throttle,  DaddyAce

Another recommendation for all who use CH Products controllers is when you have them open servicing/ repairing them

It is best to crimp down on all the female spade wire connectors.... This will help with more thorough and effective contact which will reduce spikes, spiking and smoother response from your controllers

As AckAck posted,  you can add rubber bands to increase the tension... I've used from 1 up to 10 rubber bands in the past messing around with the tension and using around 6 to 10 rubber bands makes the tension resemble the tension the old CH Products Force Feedback Fighterstick had er gave you

Thanks for the tip regarding the rubber pad, Drano

I'm guessing that you only used the fuzzy part of the velcro for this, Fugi?  interesting and thanks for the tip

I finally got around to fixing the twisty Z axis on the X52 stick this morning. Took it apart and lightly sprayed the pot on the stick with WD40 while moving the shaft on the pot back and forth. Its back together and no more random spikes anymore. Can actually hold on autopilot for more then 3 seconds now

I hope you lubricated it after the WD40.

Just another of the zillion uses for WD40. It's prolly not the best thing for that tho. They make electronics cleaner spray for that exact application. A little can lasts next to forever if that's all you're gonna use it for. Works a lot better too. Just make sure that it's labeled safe for plastics else it may weld/melt your plastic parts. Problem with WD40 is its a petroleum product. When you spray it on some plastics and rubbers that are also petroleum products it will tend to break them down and make them brittle. The good news is its fairly weak stuff!

At least it says nothing about not using on plastics, but also if it turns into a puddle of good and wires in the next week I will know not to do that again

....

I applied a Jimisha antislip Dashboard Pad to the bottom of my throttle yesterday.  This one is a good size for my throttle without cutting it.  Sticks great to the desk, as you said Drano, no more sliding around.  Best part is I can then easily enough remove the throttle from my desk, no sticky residue, and then put it up out of the way.

Yeah I don't know what they're made of but they do work great! The best part is if they get dusty you can just wash em off with a little soap and water and they're good as new.

They hold so well I was afraid to pull the throttle off by the handle. I pried it up from the bottom.

Waiting for VKB to make theirs. Been waiting for years now. In the meantime, I have been using a cheap throttle from thrustmaster. A twc I think its called. It's actually pretty good. Halls sensors I think. And it has a bunch of buttons.

VKB gunfighter stick and their rudder pedal are the best in my opinion.

I saw that throttle and wanted to wait for it just to have my gear all from one manufacture, but 6 months was long enough for me. Just preordered the Virpil VPC MongoosT-50CM3.

After decades of owning Thrustmaster gear that required regular maintenance/repair, I finally switched to a full HOTAS setup by Virpil.  Very happy with it and would never go back to TM.  You get what you pay for!
