Title: Weather
Post by: svaalbar on March 26, 2020, 08:08:39 PM
It would be really cool if Aces High had weather in it. Maybe it did, probably before I started playing in late 2018.

Like snow, thunderstorms, overcast, etc.

Interesting concept.
:aok IN DEED,Sir! Since the VR users are a bit rare...and HT has enabled use of "Hat Switch Views" to work with VR! HANDS DOWN, the best! Unless in a Custom Mission in IL-2 or DCS(as I see it), I have NEVER gone through a weather event! ++ INMHO/first hand experiences for IL-2 and DCS It would add another level to our experiences/fun

Man if you could have varying low alt winds and fog, etc., it would make bombers have to up with secondary targets in mind.  And would make flying in terrain especially fun.  Yeah, not everywhere, but randomly on maps.

If I recall correctly Fighter Ace had weather.  I distinctly remember flying through rain.  Snow covered maps as well.

Or I may just be getting old and not remembering properly.

I am now playing WOWS since the fights in here became so poor and they have lightning storms.  Lol I sometimes forget to look for the enemy because I am enjoying the weather show!

Nah mate very unlikely.  I had some very unwelcome personal attacks that HTC kept allowing and that was the straw that broke the camels back.  I made complaints but the attacks came coming.  I left.

Also, I went through the AH evolution curve.  I was seal clubbed, learned to survive, did the BnZ, transitioned to TnB, got burned out when the numbers dropped and the norm was hit and run.  I know I went through the hit and run in my evolution, I like to think I was one of the more aggressive BnZ guys but truth is I was probably a pain in the bellybutton to the TnB guys.  I can only think that the tipping point was numbers.  I could accept being picked because I had fights in between.  Then it became less and less about the fights and more and more about the points, or if not points then not getting killed.  For a guy like me that tipping point was too much and added to my frustration.

There used to be a DA but the introduction of the - you know what I actually do not know what it is called now - killed off the DA crowd.  I had nowhere to go and no one to go with.  It seems the art of the fight is very much second to the points or the win and I do not think that is the way to go but c'est la vie.  I have seen people brag about how good they are because they killed player x but when player x says '1 on 1?' they not only decline but they actually abuse player x, often supported by others in the game.

Let me get this right. Player A brags, player B says '1 on 1 we can prove it'  Not only does player A refuse, he doubles down on how good he is and others back him up!!  "yeah man, fugg him you play your game he sux...."  wow in a combat game?

It is not unique to this game.  People have become conditioned to not lose.  They translate that into their gameplay.  I am having issues with WOWS for exactly the same reason.

It didn't have weather just the annoying cloud map that was partly responsible for worsening the player numbers.

What is WOWS   and does it have aircraft?

If it doesn't have aircraft then what on earth are you doing playing that when you could try DCS or IL2?    :headscratch:

if you want a lightning storm DCS has that and it is freaking scary, so no servers put it on and then you realise having no weather is the only sensible option for online play.    :airplane:

WOWS = World of Warships

I have both DCS and IL2 but have never found a server with decent numbers in my time zone.  Just got Half Life Alyx - the VR one so messing with that.

Can you do an experiment?

If you go into AH "choose terrain", choose the germanyw terrain, and download it.

Then take this cloud file:
http://electraforge.com/brooke/flightsims/ahScenarioGuild/cloudDesigns/med15klight5k.awa

Store it in this folder:
C:\Hitech Creations\Aces High III\chconfig\germanyw

Go into AH, choose terrain of germanyw, and go into offline practice.

Check frame rate of flying around with no clouds.

Now, open text radio buffer and type in:
.ulweath med15klight5k.awa
.sweath med15klight5k

Check frame rate of flying around with clouds.

Can you let me know the two frame rates (with clouds and without clouds) as well as graphics card model, and what AH graphics detail you have set, especially the "Environment Map" slider -- is that slider at "none"?

Here is what I found.

In flight without clouds is 53-57 fps.
With clouds gets me 35-43 with a drop to about 15 when I get into the clouds.

Running Nvidia GeForce GT740 and yes, I know I need an upgrade soon.

Set environmental map to 0. That's likely killing the crap out of your performance.

Yep.  I think a GeForce 740 should be good enough.

Make sure "environment map" slider is at 0.  Disable reflection.

GeForce 740 is 7 years old. In gaming, that's really old.

Aces High does demand a decent video card. The good news, Hitech does allow you to tweak your graphical settings to account for older PC's.

IMHO, we should at least be running 900 series graphic cards, or 970GTX if you want to experience VR.
Title: Re: Weather
Post by: Drano on April 08, 2020, 01:15:19 PM
Yeah when AH3 came along the game became more video card-centric than earlier versions. Not that a better GPU didn't help before but it's a lot more of a priority now.

This guy isn't doing VR or anything fancy.

He just wants to fly around and not have clouds reduce his frame rate to 15 fps.

Let's see what happens when he puts "environment map" slider to 0 and disables reflections.

I'm thinking his current card will be fine.
Title: Re: Weather
Post by: Drano on April 08, 2020, 01:45:46 PM
Yeah those two settings alone will help dramatically and IMO you won't really be missing much. I disable the post processing effects too like bloom etc.

I agree Brooke - he can also reduce some of his other settings such as ground, object, and terrain detail. For us pilots, you only need to see the ground when you're ready to land...

I wish that there were detailed overlay help/suggestions on some of these panels.  Never really sure of what the advantages vs the trades offs are on these things.

I have a pretty good computer i7-7820@3.60GHz, 32GB RAM, GTX 1080 Ti card and when I used to play I always turned off post lighting, reflections, shadows, ground clutter.

There is nothing wrong with the graphics in AH but running the extra fruit adds nothing and solid FPS is much better for you.  I was able to run 144 FPS no matter what with the fruit turned off.
