There can be ten players.
Chime in, if you want to play and I'll PM the password to you.

Send a PM to Steve, too. He's been wanting to get in on another game.

Okay... password is sent to both of you.

The map link will work if you remove the %20.
Not sure why it's doing this.

I'd like in as well.

Hmmm... Mr. Itdoesn'tlookcomplicated didn't read much, did he? :)
http://www.floc.net/dpjudge/?page=Email#join
Some of the commands on DPJudge must be sent via email the same way as you would in the Ken Lowe system:
http://www.diplom.org/Email/newintro.html
...but you'll probably get by without knowing that.
You WILL have to register with the DPJudge:
http://www.floc.net/dpjudge/dppd/

Would like to play :)

Did I do that right?
N/M I think I got it.

Ok got the refistration part.

Do i need to regsiter again?
-
First, you'll have to register with the judge. If you've done that already, you'll have to send an email to the judge to join the game.
To join, send the email to: dpjudge@diplom.org
In the body of the message type:
JOIN OCLUB_MODERN password
That's all there is to it.
-
Ah, I was leaving off the game name:o
-
Which password ?

It says on the Oclub screen you need a Password and a Privacy word.
-
oops... my mistake
To join, send the email to: dpjudge@diplom.org
In the body of the message type:
JOIN OCLUB_MODERN yourpassword gamepassword
-
Do I need another one from you? Or do I enter my login password and the game password?
-

Exactly... your login and the one I gave you.
-
Im sorry for asking so many questions, but where can I retrieve my login Password :D
-
Sandy...
Heh, well damn. I managed to join up as Power #1 AND as Power #2. I think I sent off about 10 emails trying to get it right, and must've doubled up somewhere in there. Is this something you can fix, or should I figure out how to withdraw on one of 'em?
PS...your PM box is full.
-
Also, regarding the rules of this game... I think that considering the leniency of the CD_Builds & CD_Retreats, I think the grace period should be cut down to 10 hrs. That way we don't have to wait an entire day for someone missing their orders, but they still have plenty of time to enter them after the reminder email is sent when they miss the deadline.
-
Still looking for help getting in....:(
-
I think you can go here: http://www.diplom.org/dpjudge/dppd, and set up an account, and then use the password you set up when sending out the join email. This isn't how I've done it in the past, but it's what I ended up doing this time.
-

It's the password you created when you registered with the DPJudge.
This is different than the password or privacy word used for the game.
-
Hmmmmm....
I used that link above to resend password and it was what I was using the join email....

I sent you the privacy word via PM. I don't know your password. You will need to use both to join the game.

Well you only gave me one password.
And Ive been using my login password, plus the privacy word you sent me.

What's the result?

Well Im not getting it right then...My password is correct, so is the Privacy word...

LOL, so I guess I moved to power two? I'm confused, but that's nothing new.
-
Only two so far, wheres everyone else?:D
-
Did you get in, Nefarious? I'm not getting any confirmation, either. Sent in my registration in about 20 different formats, too. :)
-
For those that haven't played before, you need to be aware that this game is a long term deal. Games can last 6 months. You'll need to submit your orders a few times a week. If you miss, you'll have a small grace period to get them in. Either 1 day or 10 hrs if SOB's change gets implemented. You can put the game on hold if you go on vacation or something else comes up.
If you can't commit to the whole game, please don't play. If you're someone who quits the first time they get backstabbed or start to lose territory, don't play. Nothing screws up a game more than someone quitting. So if you can't stick the game out until your last army, please don't play.

Sweet...still better than a whole day of waiting!
And to add to Tarmac's bit - if you join the game, know that you WILL get stabbed, and it WILL be by someone who swore on his Grandma's grave that he wouldn't betray you. If that makes you get all hot under the collar, then go play solitaire instead. :) And now I'll come clean and say that you might not actually get stabbed...but you WILL be lied to.

You'll be Power #1 until we have all ten players. Then, countries will be randomly assigned. If the power numbers jockey around, no need to fret.
-
I shouldn´t, but I will try this...
-
Hey Sandy, why the REALTIME rule?
REAL_TIME
If this rule is used, the game will be processed as soon as the last player submits orders (this player will have no opportunity to modify them). Additionally, players will not be allowed to direct that the game wait for any deadline before processing. This rule is used especially for games with very short deadlines (for example, 10 minutes).
Maybe I haven't thought it through, but this rule sounds like it would be pretty frustrating if you meant to change your orders at a specific time, ie lunch, and instead find that the game processed your "interim" orders insted. I know that I use the "wait until deadline before processing" box a lot, and I'd be screwed up without it.

Okay... I was thinking that more often than not, the players complain about other players using the "wait until deadline" box.
I'll remove the rule and let you guys sort that one out.

Just three more. Somebody pressure Nash into another game. ;)
BTW... whatever happened to banana?

We've got seven players.
I'm wondering if I can change the map to standard and start with what we have.
If not, I'll create a new game and we'll go with that. If that's okay.
-
I'll put $10 on Swoop to win. He's never played so you gotta give me some odds.
Any takers?
-
Heya Sand, I know I said in another thread I'd help out if you didn't have enough players.... but thinking about it today, I'm gonna be pretty busy this fall and probably don't need more distractions. Sorry m8.

No worries... I think everyone has joined except Swoop.
I've changed the map to standard. We're good to go.

This link has all sorts of good stuff, especially the official Diplomacy rules. I can't stress strongly enough the need to learn the rules. It shows you exactly how to issue orders correctly.
Also, when you issue your orders and click "Submit Updates", the DPJudge will tell you if you have any invalid orders. You'll then have the chance to correct them.
Here's a good place to read about strategy:

Steve didn't get in. I've got seven signed on. Steve wants in and Gunslinger said he would play.
I may have dorked this all up.
The question is... do we continue with seven or do I see if I can change it to the modern map and get one more?

It's only just begun, I say switch maps and let 'em in if you can!

The only way to take over a place in the game is by using email (http://www.floc.net/dpjudge/?page=Email).
The web interface doesn't allow for it.

Steve?

A basic synopsis for anyone who is still lost. I figured I might as well put it here since I'd already typed it out to one player. Rather not lose it. :)
-----
Ok, this is a basic game of "take over the world with your armies/fleets" -- similar to Risk. Basically, you want to control Supply Centers (SC's). For each one you have, you get a build (a new unit). Each turn is divided into 3 phases -- spring movement, fall movement, and winter adjustments. Movement phases are where the combat takes place. Winter is for building and disbanding units -- you equalize the number of SC's you control with the number of units on the board. If you control 6 SC's and have only 4 units on the board, you build 2 units. If you control 4 SC's and have 6 units, you choose 2 units to disband.
Combat is simple in theory, but gets more difficult the more units you have attacking every which way. There are no dice, no luck. 2 units dislodges 1 unit -- the one would be forced to retreat or be destroyed if there are no valid places to retreat to. 1v1, 2 v 2, etc causes a "bounce" -- nobody moves.
Here's the kicker: you can only have one unit per territory. Since you can see from the map that each of us has only a few units to start (probably only 3), it is essential that you team up with other players. That's where the diplomacy comes in. You'll need to negotiate with everyone, and I mean everyone, so you have as much info as possible regarding what's going to happen the next turn. If a player is not talking to you, they're probably plotting against you -- so keep them talking. Regardless, they're probably still plotting against you. :)
You give orders by typing in the text box of the DPjudge. There are a few basic types of moves - a "move" (can be an attack if the space you're moving to is occupied or someone else is trying to move there). Basically, you'd type "A MEX to TEX" -- this would move Army Mexico to Texas, assuming no other units blocked it. Other important orders are holds, convoys, and supports. Check the rules for explanations.
Armies can move from land territory to land territory, can move over sea if there's a dotted path (like Denmark to Sweden), or can move over sea spaces by getting convoyed by fleets (see convoying rules).
So read the rules, then head to floc.net/dpjudge and login to game oclub_modern as your power (germany). You send presses (notes) to other players from this screen by checking their box. Your presses are anonymous, so be sure to sign them. Be aware that since there are anonymous presses, anything you read could be from anybody. So you have to pay close attention to what they're saying and if it makes sense, because somebody could be messing with you. Plus, even when it is from the right person, they could be flat out lying to you.
-
I find the lack of communication rather dissapointing. Ive been quiet, but at least I sent out a message to the European community.
Maybe everyone is against me :noid

Hmmm... you're England, I think.
If you are, you better find out where you stand between France and Germany.
Of France, Germany, and England only two will survive the first four to five years. In fact, one of the three will see his doom on the horizon in the next two to three moves.
IIRC, SOB was England awhile back and I was Germany. Man did he not see that one coming. :rofl
-
Within a couple of years I went from happy-go-lucky to hapless victim. I ended up with Sandy's name branded into my ass, and had to work as his court jester for table scraps. Bastard! :D
-
LOL... I tell ya... that was my absolute best stab ever.
-
Hey, my name was branded on your bellybutton in that one too!
-
****! I forgot... Tarmac was France. Couldn't have done it without ya.
-
:D That one was a classic. I was on the edge of my seat waiting for that deadline, just to see if I was getting played as badly as I thought I was playing SOB.
Fond memories. :)
-
:D You and me both. I was almost certain that you and SOB we're playing me.
Didn't you and I end that one as a draw exactly as we planned from the start? Or did I stab you at the end? Can't remember.
-
SOB sure thought we were playing you. :)
Yeah, we called a draw, and I'm still pissed that you whacked Archduke Sikboy's single army right at the end. After all that effort to keep him alive. :p
-
I had to cut Sikboy. The board lacked semetry. :)
-
Steve! Swoop!
Italy! Germany!
You're about to miss your first deadline.
-
aw nuts.
-
You've got a grace period... still time to get them in. That's what it's for. :)
-
I've extended the grace period from 12 hours to a full day.
Until the newer players get a good handle on the game, I'll leave it at a day.
-
Boooooooo!
-
Yeah... I know SOB. I haven't forgotten that you asked for the shorter grace period.
We'll get there.
-
Whats up Germany?
-
He's got PM's, emails, and diplomacy messages. Hope everything is ok.

-
Well, Ill be out of town until Sunday. Just to let ya know.
-
Sandy, wasn't there another person who wanted to play?
Time to find a sub if Swoop doesn't get back to us by the time Nefarious returns. Game momentum is gonna be dead as it is.

I'm interested in Playing. Can I still join? Or is it too late?

I'm going to turn off civil disorder until this sorts out.

I turned civil disorder off, and you were dismissed by the judge. You'll have to send an email to takeover Germany.
-
So what's the deal? Is swoop back in, or are we finding a replacement?
-
Hmmm... we've spent over a week just trying to get started. At this point, Germany is open to the first person that can figure out the takeover command.
-
Let someone else take it, I thought I'd have the time for this but real life is exploding here right now.
I'll catch the next one in 6 months or so......

Im back

Well, all this time has given me a chance to re read rules and how to play. Bet I still mess something up. :D
-
Bump... we need someone to take Germany. The game hasn't started yet.
-
I'll do it. What do I need to do?
-
First register here:
http://www.floc.net/dpjudge/dppd/
Then, send an email (from the address you registered with) to dpjudge@floc.net
with this in the body:
---------------
TAKEOVER GOCLUB_MODERN yourPassword[/]
SIGNOFF
-
OK, I sent the email and got all registered. What should I do now?
Wait, shouldn't it be
TAKEOVER GOCLUB_MODERN mypassword gamepassword
SIGNOFF
?
-
Try both, but I don't think you need the gamepassword for a takeover command.
-
Sandy's order format is correct. From the website:
Okay. It allows a kind, much-appreciated soul to become a map-power in a game that has already started. Which means that one of the map-powers has taken a powder and left the spot available. The command has the same syntax as SIGNON and RESIGN:
TAKEOVER initialLetterOfPowerNamegameN ame yourPassword -or-
TAKEOVER completePowerName@gameName yourPassword
Remember that, like the RESIGN command, the TAKEOVER command does not follow a SIGNON command but rather is used instead of a SIGNON command. It does serve the same purpose as SIGNON, in that it does sign you on to the game -- that is, you may send press in your TAKEOVER message. You are only allowed to TAKEOVER vacant map-powers. Here are the two possible ways to TAKEOVER an abandoned position as Austria:
TAKEOVER Agamename password
TAKEOVER austria@gamename password

Oh whoops, I'm sending it to the wrong address.
-
Alright, it finally worked. Game On.
Now I just have to figure out what to do.
Alright, just reading over the newbie guide...
Any place with a dot of your color is a supply center? How is this important?
Also, are the fleets actual fleets of boats? They can travel the water but the armies cannot?
What are the rules to building new armies and fleets?
-
The rules: http://www.avalonhill.com/rules/diplomacy.pdf
Also, skim over this thread. I posted a very basic summary of the game on pg3, and posted a bunch of helpful strategy links on pg2. I'd read my summary on pg 3 first, then read the rules, then read some of the strategy links.
To answer your questions:
Supply Centers (SC) are the objective of the game. Control more than half of them and you win. SCs get you builds -- for every SC you control, you get to build a new army or fleet in one of your home SCs. Lose one and you'll have to disband an army or fleet. Basically, your SCs = # of units on the board (with some exceptions).
Fleets are your navies, armies are your armies. Fleets can move on water or on coastal territories. Armies move on land only. Armies can move over water if they're convoyed by a fleet (see the convoy order in the rules), or they can move across the dotted lines you see on the map without the aid of a fleet.

Alright, I just read over the hasbro rules thing. I think I'm good to go.
One question though. Can I support a foreign army? Or can I only support my own?
Also, is the starting turn in Spring? Or fall? Do I have to issue build commands? Or is it done automatically. Is it done after the fall turn?
Lastly, are all the orders completed at the end of the turn? I.E. Do all the moves and attacks happen suddenly? Or is it as I submit?

1. There's a reason they call the game Diplomacy. Support from other countries is the only way to win.
2. The starting turn is spring. Your forces will move again in Fall.
3. The orders are completed at the end of the turn. All moves and attacks happen simultaneously.
-
Lastly, a list of all the people and what country they are...
Oh also, when counting the number of armies you have...
You only have the amount of SC's you own. But does this only count SC's outside of your home?
I.E. If I move a unit off of a home SC, onto a foreign SC, do I gain one more unit? Or not because I only have units on 3 SC's.

Greetings,
WooWoo!
Finally game time!

Press is the key to winning. I suggest you introduce yourself to the other players and start your dialogue. You'll soon figure out who is who.
-
Man, I'm having fun already.
-
One more day!
-
If someone (dunno who) would uncheck their "wait until deadline" box then we could have this turn done in 20 mins. :)
-
Der uhhh, oopsy!
-
Umm, quick question, whats bounce mean ?
-
Two forces of equal strength tried to occupy the same territory, therefor they "bounced" back to their original positions.
-
Wait, are the build orders given during the fall turn? Or after as a pseudo turn?
-
Build orders happen only during the winter.
-
Do enjoy not answering the questions?
After the end of this turn, there's going to be another short turn to determine build and abandon orders?
Also, who are the gnomes of zurich?

That was the answer. In the game, much like this planet, there are seasons. It starts with spring, than summer, fall, and winter. Then, it's spring again; a neverending cycle until someone controls eighteen supply centers.
There's a spring move and a fall move. There is no move in the summer. After the fall move there is another phase called "winter adjustments".
This is all pretty basic stuff and it's all covered in the rules (http://www.wizards.com/avalonhill/rules/diplomacy.pdf).
As for the Gnomes, he's an observer.
-
Can you and the Gnomes see all conversations?
-
I don't believe that the Gnome can, but I see everything.
-
I see dead people.
This is tons o fun.
-
This is like crack, I need more...faster...
-
:D
Welcome to the club. You have arrived.
-
Every week its the same thing. Most all the countries have their orders in except maybe 2or 3, and we end up waiting 3-4 days for the deadline. Then we wait while they put their orders in after the deadline. Is it possible for the deadline to be shortend? This would make those last minute guys, just last minute a few days earlier.
-
Come on, lets get the orders through before the weekend!!!!!! Purty Please.
-
No. ;)
-
There's a reason the game is called, "Diplomacy" and not "War".
Go "diplom" or something. ;)
-
I been "diplom" so much my right hand hurts. Oh wait...
-
Umm, I'm currently having trouble accessing the game. Anyone else?
-
Yeah, haven't been able to get in for at least 24 hours either.

Server puked, you can't submit orders but the games are still processing. They're working on it, but they don't know when it'll be back up.
According to those posts, you can still submit email commands. Sandy, it may be a good idea to pause the game so it doesn't go forward with no orders submitted. I assume there's some way to rollback turns also, but don't know how much of a PITA that is.
-
I'll see what I can do.
I've been searching through the email commands looking for a "pause". No luck so far. When I get home, I'll just set the deadline for January 1 and change it again if the server gets moving.
-
It'd be great if you could at least somehow put a pause on this turn. I never bothered to learn how to do it by email because it was all there on the web page.
-
btw, the diplom.org webpage still works. it's just the floc.net page and the dpjudge that are down. So some of the reference stuff is still available.
-
Well, right now I'm studying electrical building systems. After that I'll be studying electrical hi low pass filters. After that I'll be studying modern architecture.
The email Diplomacy structure doesn't fit in anywhere in there.
-
Thanks Sandy
-
Well... if the judge is running, it doesn't appear to be answering emails.
I can't stop it. I sent a couple of emails to dpjudge@diplom.org and I got nothing in return.
Trying dpjudge@floc.net next.
-
Think I got it now.
-
Game on!
Deadline is set for Monday, 2359 Pacific time.
