Whats your favorite beer/lauger?
I dont mean what beer do you drink once a month when you can offord it, but what do you normaly drink?
--
Its normaly a toss up between :
Fosters(Bitter or regular)
heineken (not the special dark, thats nasty crap)
Honey Brown (good smooth drinkin!!)
just depends what i gotta do the "day after"
**heinekens for when i got the following day off :)**
***DISCLAIMER*** I Know most aussies hate fosters because stupid people believe the comercials and think that you all love some fosters and act like the idiots in the adds**
But its good brew, best i can find for the $$$
-
Doh, misread as usual, my "regular" is something different each week, sometimes Hieniken, sometimes Redhook (Its always a premium beer since my wife and I drink very little, about 5 beers a week avg. for me)...but when I'm in a good mood, we like to get Guiness, they now can it with those little CO2 thingie's that inject CO2 into the can when you open it.

Samuel Smiths "India Pale Ale". Imported and pricey at $3.50 a bottle I 'll gladly take a local Sam Adams India Pale Ale most any time of any day instead :)

Red Stripe.

Paulaner Premium Pils

Guinness most likely my favorite... and you can get it virtually anywhere on earth.
Local brews boils down to two:
Black Butte Porter
Widmeir Hefeweisen
I haven't found a company that does either a porter or a hef better (yet).
AKDejaVu
-
Saranac.
Almost any of theirs, but their Pale Ale is excellent, as is the Black and Tan. Even the Amber and the Lager are good.
Seems to be a western New York brewery. My kid found it when he went to school at SUNY Buffalo to play football.
Bless his heart.. he brings old Dad a couple case of mixed when he visits home. :D

Im not a "big drinker" my self, most nights i'll only have 1-3 beers (or a pint can :)), if any.. but damn i love the taste of a good brew.
i'll have to check out guiness, ive heard nothing but good things about it.
Sadly most folks forieng to the U.S. think we all drink "bud-mud" (budweiser), due to all the marketing propaganda. my self think it taste like horse piss :D

Alexander Keith's Indian Pale Ale.
-a Brief History of Indian Pale Ale
Regular (dark) ales would go bad during the trip to India. Brit troops wanted their beer to. They changed the brewing process, so the alchol content would be higher. This preserved the beer better and made it lighter in colour.
-
..until some scrawny bald guy wearing dorky glasses took their beer from them ;) :D
Beers:
Sapporo (dunno, taste is different.. saltwater?)
AGUILA (oooh strong)
and that canadian ice brewed beer.. goes great with pancakes. :)
Others:
Sake (Japanese)
Aguardiente (Colombian)
Pisco (Peruvian)
Whiskey/Scotch (johny walker)
and call me shirley, SANGRIA (goes good with pancakes as well!)
Yumm...

Dilettantes!
Budwieser if it is on ice, Busch pints if not, in a glass. Red Stripe, the best beer made in Jamacia, is also good hot or cold.
Killian Red or Ichiban, if I only plan on drinking one or 2. Esoteric would be Purple Haze by Abita beer, or Elephant, both almost a class IV narcotic.

And many more. :D

American beer tastes like water ;). I like a real Aussie beer like west end draught or coopers sparkling. If i'm feeling fancy I have a Beamish, but generally speaking i'll drink anything beer-like thats not from the US. Sorry guys. Make some suggestions, make me change my mind :).
Worst beer ever is Samuel Adams. I hated it so much that i donated a left over 6 pack to my cricket team and no-one finished a bottle. All went in the bin.

James Boag
Cascade

James Squire India Pale :)

I'd tell you guys how easy it is to brew your own beer thats better than most stuff you can buy. But then you'd all be off homebrewing & drinking and who would I kill?
Got 12 of a nice Newcastle type stout left I'm saving for the Holidays.
Just put down 2 cases of Extra Pale Ale that smells SOOOOOOO good.
Did I mention you can brew it yourself for half to 1/4 the $$$ of storebought?
-
My uncle and a mate does it and they worked out that it costs about 30c a bottle as compared to 1.50 odd from a store. And it tastes great. My mate makes this ginger beer thats extremely evil, it tastes just like normal ginger beer but after 2 or 3, wooooo. You feel real good.

Not all of them. Most of the mass produced and marketed ones, yes.
However, there's quite a few specialty brewers and microbrewers that do an exceptional job.
but don't believe me. Try some. ;)
-
I think I might do just that, Toad. Do any specific ones spring to mind?
-
Don't know if you'll be able to find them very far from their breweries.
Here in Kansas City, Boulevard Brewery and Pony Express Brewery both make nice lines of beers, ales and stouts.
Pony Express (http://www.ponyex.com/flagship.html)
Boulevard (http://www.blvdbeer.com/product_set.html)
I also like some of the Free State stuff, brewed about 30 miles away in Lawrence, Kansas.
Free State (http://www.freestatebrewing.com/FSBBeers.html)
Out in Seattle, I always make it a point to drop in on Redhook.
Red Hook (http://www.redhook.com/ales/index.html)
I like Squatters in Salt Lake and some of the Wasatch brews as well.
Squatters (http://www.squatters.com/03.htm)
Wasatch (http://www.wasatchbeers.com/pages/beers.html)
I guess just about every reasonably sized city in the US has its own brews once again, like we had in the "old" days before the giants crushed them out.
Not every one is good, but it would also be pretty hard not to find ONE that is excellent and to your personal taste.
If you ever make it to KC, well round up the AH guys and take you on a tour. ;)
-
Being from the northwest (origionally), I am quite a fan of several area breweries, though my favorite brewery is Deschutes River Brewery. Best stuff on earth. I heard a saying once, that "When God has a beer, He has himself a Black Butte Porter".
I really don't think Budweiser is all that bad, when I drink a "Butt Beer" (what my wife calls the major domestics), that's what I prefer. Just not in the same class as most microbrewed stuff.
On the flip side, I've tasted microbrew that might as well have been bottled piss. Alcatraz brewing (I think LA, and SF bay area) comes to mind.

Nice replies. Matter of fact I've found my New Years resolution. I'm making a list of the beers mentioned here and my goal is to try each at least once during 2002. The scotch and Coors Lite mentioned obviously don't make the list not being beer and all ;)

"if you have 3 beers a night- consistently, you are a big drinker."
So what does that make my dad? Until recently he drank a case a day; now he's down to about 8-12. Not bad for a man in his 70's!

Good replies guys, i dont know about you all but this post makes me thristy! :D
Gavor- i gotta agree with you, american "Beer" is normaly horse piss.. most likely due to it being made for mass production and not flavor.. BUT theres a few good ones if you look hard enough, the normal ones you'll find like "Miller" "BudWeiser" "rolling rock(nasty)" to name a few dont have a strong taste, and are very watered down.
I took a liking to "honey brown lauger", that stuff taste so good and smooth you can help but drink it.. if you ever see it somewhere on tap do your self a favor and get a pint of it, you'll thank me.
also any of you tried out Killians Irish red in the keg cans?? MMMMmmm good.. who ever thought of making minature kegs the size of a large can of beer is a evil man, and i want to shake his hand
Ok i gotta stop im at work and this is making think twice about what to do for lunch :D
-
Newcastle Brown is my first choice at most places, and from the grocery store I shop at. I even adopted Newcastle United as my football (soccer) team due to the beer! I was pissed when they put ntl: as their sponsor on their kits. I need to order the 1999 blue away kit before Subside runs out. :)
I prefer porters and stouts after that, as I haven't found another ale that tastes as good to me.
Guinness, Watney's Cream Stout, Imperial (I think it was called this) and McGuire's (local pub here in town) for stouts. Oh, Sam Adams cream stout isn't bad.
Porters - the McGuire's is good, I also like Sierra Nevada (and have some in my fridge next to the newcastle right now). Anchor Steam Porter is good too.
Only lager I really care for is Red Stripe. I haven't tried any of the Asians, tho I hear they're good (Sapporo sp?, TsingTao, and one other that starts with an A i think.)
Can't remember the name, but there's a fantastic Polish pilsner I've had... Nice place in town has 100's of imports and microbrews. Their motto is no crap on tap, meaning only Bud you're getting is out of a bottle (if they have iced any down that is!)
Interesting beers.. Samichlaus!!! (sp?) Swiss beer they only made once a year (dec 6yh), then barrel it for 3 years! Sadly, this beer has been discontinued. I only had it once, a 1994 vintage (funny to say that about a beer!) in 1997 or 1998. I'm glad I kept the empty bottle. Maybe they'll bring it back one day...
La fin du monde - Canadian beer. cloudy and strong (9% alc/vol). Fantastic beer!
Humpback Honey Wheat - Microbrew I had once back in mid 90's. I haven't seen it around these parts since. Think it was made in Minnesota, but not sure. Anyone else know of this micro?
McGuire's Root Beer - it ain't real beer, but it's the best root beer I've ever had! I order this more than their stout and porter combined!
Ghost, I want some of that Newcastle like stout. That sounds damned interesting!
oh, worst beer I've ever had. Apollo. It's in some blue bottle, and boy, it SUCKED!
-
I highly recomend the Northern Brewer Nut Brown Ale for Newcastle & Guiness lovers.
Its an easy beer to make that will knock your socks off its so good. But the sky's the limit!
-
Westy-
add Paulaner Hefe-Weissbier to that list :)
Also, Salvator Doppelbock is very very good...just don't plan on doing much the night after you drink a bunch of it. ;)
-
Would have to agree with Raub, Paulaner hits the spot for me.
-
Paulaner is king!
Their amber lager is good too.
St. Pauli and Warsteiner are pretty good beer too. You gotta love countries (read: not the US) that can make a light beer (read light as in color, not lite as in no fat) that A: doesn't taste like piss; B: Doesn't give you the... um... trots.
-
Never got the trots from McMenamins "Ruby", but you just can't go out and buy that unless you live in the Northwest (Portland area has lots, I think they are in Seattle now). I wish they bottled the stuff.
My favorite light beer of all time is Full Sail's Very Special Pale. Find it, you'll be happy. :)
-
Beer ain't drinkin'
But I like
Sierra Nevada
Anchor Steam
Pilsner Urquell
Zywiec
Bud in bottles
Aussie beer tastes like piss. :)
Actually I drink a toejamload of Fosters every year at Indy, but only because they have big cans.
-
damn i forgot about "La fin du monde" (the end of the world)
as far as i know this beer only comes in the 750 ml bottle (26 ounce) and it is corked!
it is fermented with the yeast still in the bottle, so if it is cloudy you shook the bottle or set it on it's side.
if you try la fin du monde and like it, be sure to try "maudite." it is made by the same brewery, in the same bottle, has a cool story behind the name, and is a nuttier and more full bodied beer.
-
I thought one of the stipulations of "beer" was the alchol content couldn't be more that 5%. Someone correct me if i'm wrong. Having Dabbled in home brewing.
HEY NATE!!!!! wheres my Hellfire brew????????????

If you like to put hair on your chest, try Spaten Optimator or EKU Kulminator. The latter is so alcoholic as to be easily confused with something other than beer.
Everybody should try one... once. :)

Cheers Toad, I'm going to look around and see if i can find someone importing any of the beers you mentioned. If for some reason I ever end up in the US i'll be sure to do an AH beer tour ;).

Sadly, I am not allowed to buy any beer until I have finished my 40 pints of homebrew. I say sadly because 2 pints of it makes me fall over and then I get the sh*ts bigtime and I fart blue flashes.
If given a choice I will drink Staropramen, from Czech rep. or Veltins aus Deutschland (which you can't get in UK, why oh why did I leave Germany, they have everything.. Gluhwein, bratwurst, balkan restaurants, proper cakes, good coffee, kartoffelsalat, ............................. ...........................fr ites mit mayo (drones on)

Sorry to drag this on, but my favorite tends to be a very well known type.

On a searing hot day it's Red Stripe or Labbatt's 50(Ice cold from freezer..you know..like just before ot freezes)Only problem is the beer you forgot about tends to make brown slush all inside your freezer.. :D

Can't stand beer (all the more for you). I go for cider: Scrumpy, Strongbow, and Merrydown are my preferred ones.
But I'm more a wine drinker - I find a good Burgundy or Alsatian wine hard to beat.

Originally posted by qts:

I mostly drink cider and enjoy most makes, including the ones you mentioned.
But I'm more a wine drinker
I like drinking wine too - often home-made from kits most of the time, but occasionally enjoy a bottle of something like Hock or Liebfriemilch (sp?), or a red wine.
I enjoy drinking beer also - Boddies, Theakston's Old Peculier, Murphy's are among my favourites... (I'm also a member of CAMRA - Campaign for Real Ale <g> ).
Mustn't forget the spirits - whisky in various forms always goes down well for me, either neat, or I may mix a cheaper make with lemonade. I very occasionally like Gin & Tonic or Rum and Peppermint also :)
Other favourite drinks include Port and Sherry - heck just about anything! :D
Although I do like a drink, especially while I am flying, I am often just as happy with a glass of lemonade or shandy... ;)
-
Those Saranac sampler six packs are good for variety. The different brews taste pretty good too, and they're not too expensive. I think it's brewed by Matts, of the beer-ball ilk.
