Word is out that Robin Olds, 479th FG Ace in 38s and 51s in WW2 and 4 Mig kill, F4 Pilot in Vietnam, died in his sleep June 14th.
One heckuva pilot and leader according to those that flew with him.

Well this is sad news. I saw him at my first Warbird MiniCon in Seattle. He was the speaker there. I had just read about him in an articile in Aviation History mag. Very interesting to listen to him. The one story I remember him tell us was that he was out in New Mexico doing some one on one in a T37. His neck was still sore from that flight.
Blue Skys to a great American.

Gen Robin Olds, a true hero of our squadrons namesake.

Wow he looks like a kid in that photo next to the 38. He must be 19 or so but looks 10. It's amazing they sent kids up that young flying in such duty handling such complicated planes. I don't know how it all worked. Robin Olds was one of my favorites, very colorful, funny, and just seemed like the type of guy you could walk up to and shake his hand. Wish i could tell him thank you as well as all the other veterans. Wish we had more people in the world like him. Salute Robin Olds Salute! :aok

I'll bet he never envisioned himself passing on in his sleep when he was younger.
One of the many I would have liked to meet.
It was my honor to serve at Udorn-Thani ..after he had gone, but his spirit was alive and well in the pilots and people there on the line every day.
Here's to the Mig Killers.
