Title: P-51B "Snoot's Sniper" Lt Francis Home, 352nd FG / 328th FS
Post by: oboe on June 28, 2020, 11:51:11 AM
Lt. Francis Home was given credit for 5.5 kills while flying "Snoot's Sniper" with the 352nd Fighter Group out of Bodney, England.

The Mustang was supposed to have been named "Snoot's Snipper" in recognition of crew chief Art "Snoots" Snyder's ability as a barber.  He painted the airplane as close to a barber pole as he could manage with red, white, and blue stripes on the trim tabs and around as many places as he could.  The right side of the aircraft featured an image of a barber pole. The airplane became a flying advertisment for the "Snyder Treatment".

Great work! Love the Blue Nosers! How about a Blue Nose "West By Gawd Virginian" <S>  :aok  :D

I think your blue may be a wee bit too dark on this one. The red and white seem great, but may be a shade too dark on the blue. Good work.

According to this photo, Oboe's blue is dark enough.

But it does look like the wheels are red and black, not red and blue.

That photo is probably a tad dark itself I'm guessing...

Maybe it is right, I don't know. It seems that if one goes by the black and white, that is too dark. If that is a true color photo from Devil and not a doctored photo, it looks about right.

Hard to say for sure.

I also had this one to go by, and I was sure I saw blue in the wheel rim:

The blue in this photo seems quite dark, and if I lighten the nose blue to a more familiar 352nd blue, the wheel definitely looks more blue too.  Snyder was so devoted to his art on the plane, don't know why he would use red/black on the wheel rim when the scheme all over the plane was red/blue/white?

That is quite dark, like I say, if it is doctored it may explain it.

The front quarter shot seems colorized to me. The wheels and gun ports look orange while the red stripe on the cowling looks more of a proper red.

That wheel in the "colorized" photo is black, not blue. The wheel also does not look red, but a more orange as compared with the trim colors on the nose.

IIRC the West By Gawd Virginian didn't have the Malcolm hood, at least I couldn't find images of it in any of my searches.  Great looking bird though, and I would gladly contribute to a kick-starter campaign to get the bird cage P-51B added to AH!

Another profile of Snoot's Sniper - all the images I've find indicate a darker blue on the nose than we typically expect to see on a 352nd blue-noser aircraft.

Still pondering about the orange/black wheel rim versus red/blue.   I lean toward a colorization error, but can't deny it definitely looks orange/black in the photo.

I don't think orange/black makes any sense considering the border trim colors.

I'll ask - are both photo's originally B&W with someone doing colorization?

If so, it could be the person who 'colored it' got the wheel color wrong. But TWO colored photos - would make sense to have it orange (in case one of them is an actual color photo).

To me the "orange" is the same shade as the red, the color balance is off in the picture I posted.. The only color that makes no sense is the black.

I don't know. The wheel colors are not even close to the nose colors in either color picture. I could be seeing something oddly, though.

Then it's clearly red.

I don't think this is an actual color photo.   I think it's colorized.

In any case, it becomes a judgment call.

agreed V then it’s totally guessword as to what the actual colors were on the wheels since the colorized photos were not 100.00% accurate.

Nice job Oboe!  According to some accounts at the time certain types of Color Film when taking a photo and processing it the yellow that one saw could show up black on the photo.

Looks good to me.
