Title: "ROAD TO RANGOON" - 2Q Scenario Announced
Post by: Fencer51 on March 06, 2011, 12:34:17 AM
(http://www.51hangar.net/banners/RTRNGOON.png)

In this Aces High Scenario, the RAF, RAAF, USAAF and AVG forces are defending Burma from the Japanese horde which is conquering all before them.  Flying Hurricane Mk I's, P-40B's, P-40E's, and Brewster Buffalos with little support and no reinforcements in sight they try to maintain air superiority over the vital port of Rangoon.  Rangoon is the vital link in the supply chain to the Chinese forces fighting the Japanese.

The IJAAF (flying Ki-43s (A6M2's), Ki-44s (A6M5b's), G4M1 Bettys, and Dinahs (Bf-110C's)) have taken bases in Siam and are setting up for a bombing offensive against the vital port.

Pilots get two lives in aircraft and unlimited lives as gunners. There will be four frames , each lasting 3 hours.  Start time will be 3:30pm Eastern US Time on Saturdays.

This is a remake of the classic "Rangoon 42" scenario with a few changes as we have different planes available now.

Schedule for this Scenario is as follows:

March

27   Scenario Registration Opens

April

May
14   Frame 1
21   Frame 2
29   Memorial Day Weekend Off

11  Frame 4

Other than the fact that the Japanese have to have too many plane substitutions, this one looks great. Really wish we had the planes to run this one the right way.

I will be there, sake in hand, and ready to defend the Japanese empire.

Well as much as the current plane substitutions are regretful, its overall better than the original runs in that we are not using Spit Is, A-20s, SBD-5s and F4Fs on the Allied side.

Ki-43s and Ki-44s had light MG loadouts and the Ki49 wasn't as impressive as our in-game 110C. The Brewster couldn't really out turn zekes like ours can.

I know you've made the best choices possible, but I still dislike how it's almost all substitutions.

At least we have the one major improvement now: The G4M1 type 11. That really does change things.

I wouldn't mind doing the scenario, but I start to get busy in the spring which will take me offline. I might walk on, but I just can't stomach putting 5 more Saturdays on hold (particularly at 3pm) now that the weather is getting nicer.

Will there be a progressive planeset as there is in battle of Germany?
Title: Re: "ROAD TO RANGOON" - 2Q Scenario Announced
Post by: Krusty on March 09, 2011, 09:24:12 AM
No. Frankly there isn't enough of a planeset to pull it off. There's also not enough time. Rangoon was a short time span early in the war. BoG spans over a year in the defense of Germany at the end of the war.

They don't really compare.

cc Krusty, I saw P40Bs and P40Es, and A6M2s and 5's. Made me think that it might be similar to BoG. :salute

my guess is that the P-40Bs will be reserve planes only, like how SBDs (as buffaloes) were used in Rangoon '42 as reserves

Didn't the AVG fly Bs and Es in the same time frame, I'm sure that being over seas they didn't get all new planes at the same time.

ah, that's why. the AVG flew -Bs while the USAAF flew -Es

i think...

Actually they're the heavy hitters. They are one of the more coveted rides in the Rangoon scenario (B or E). Even though they only have 2x 50cal in the nose, against A6M2s those are far better than .303s from hurr1s

EDIT: Last Rangoon I got to fly with the P-40Bs. It was a unique experience! I just wish it could have been against Betty bombers (Ju88 subs) and Ki43s at the time.

Title: Re: "ROAD TO RANGOON" - 2Q Scenario Announced
Post by: Krusty on March 12, 2011, 11:46:09 PM
There were certain changes since the last Rangoon... Game code back then only displayed the first 32 or so planes (on any side) and outside of that only dots would display regardless of con distance. Also the massive lag when the axis CO inevitably ordered 100 planes to cover the bombers all in 1 sector. So many cons, so muc lag, I flew right THROUGH the formations looking for the bombers and could not spot them despite flying past them.

The game code has changed since then so hopefully it won't be so bad. But I think we need some rules changes about amassing all planes in 1 keypad.

I'm officially a mercenary on this one, unless my MA squad signs up. Then I fly wing for whomever I'm told. I have no real preference on the plane set, I guess I lean towards the Zero. I cannot make all of the hops but should be able to put in one or two. Also, I only fly fighters. I do not say that as a snob but reality. I have flown bombers only a few times in the past many, many months and completely suck at it. It you want to lose a set of Bettys really quick just go ahead and stick me in one.

I'll wait patiently but happy to go where needed.

if not, you when you get there you will notice several boxes at the top that are labeled:

home, events, event logs, events calendar, cm team

in that order.

if you put your mouse cursor over the box labeled events...you will see a drop down menu...take it from there

Hmm, ROC you flying as a GL?  Getting nostalgia, first scenario was the last run of Rangoon under the GL of ROC. :D

The Ki-46 Dinah was a reconnaissance aircraft with 1- 7.9 gun in the rear. Huge leap to switch it with the 110c. Agree, too many substitutions.

Here's a thought HTC. Have more planes available for Scenarios only and not available in MA. Great way to test stuff and attract more people too. At the very least have skins available so people aren't flying German marked aircraft in a Japanese Scenario etc.

Actually the plane the 110C4 is subbing for is the KI-45 "Nick"..  thanks for catching that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kawasaki_Ki-45

I increased the number of them due to the preceived uberness of the Buffalo and the fact that the one we have is not equal to what was acutally in theater.

And I personally didn't fly this the last two times it was ran due to the number of substitutions.  This time it is far more accurate but we still have substitutions on the Axis side.

The Rangoon Write Up states the following bases are Rook:

Airfields A10, A38 and A37 will be Rook. Vehicle bases V2, V5, V22, V35, V32, V32, V34 and V25 will be Rook.

This list repeats V32...and produces the out put in following image.

Are both 23 and 33 excluded from what in essence appears to be a buffer zone?

Its unfortunate the arena setup model does not allow for warning ranges to be tuned or selected on a country by country basis..that would make this buffer zone a dead zone in terms of intelligence on both sides

Actually there is a new version of the map in progress, its not changing significantly but its going to require some mods to the writeup, and will be included in the one I will post tomorrow which will be final.

Registration is open.  I will post the final writeup once I get confirmation on some changes to the terrain and the guys look at it one more time.

No big changes, although we did add a third bomber group for 24 slots in the G4M1.

It was priceless, I wish I still had that film.

I was going to ask you before BOG if I bailed out over the airspawn and shot down a plane from my chute if it was allowed or not.  :D

BTW if you are going to do that map, look at the ranges set for warnings in the writeup it was 4 miles bombers, 3 miles fighters.  And those have shrunk some.. figure 2 miles for each plane type based upon the fact it is a jungle and visability is low unless you are on top of a mountain or bare ridgeline.

That map has the default rings...

Here is 4 and 3 mile

Actually, there is an opportunity to create a dead zone in an event.  The radar ranges are not tuned individually, but the base flash can be disabled individually per country so the neutral side can be effectively taken out of play as any reconnaissance tool.

But to your point as quoted, that would be a great tool to have, individual ranges and altitude options per country.

WarningFlags on a country basis...that is an excellent tool...the write up (yes I know its not completed)...makes no reference to utilizing the Warning Flags...here is hoping it does...

I hope you guys kill the flash on the neutral (Rook) zone entirely...make it a dead zone...entirely dependent on scouts and intelligence reports

I agree with your comment. Ranges are not able to be modified on country by country basis...and it would be great if you could

BomberWarningRange
FighterWarningRange
BoatWarningRange
VehicleWarningRange

Same goes for SectorRange and TowerRange

due to the perceived uberness of the Buffalo

Personally, I don't think that it's "perceived" at all, however I am anxious to see these new planes put to use in this scenario.  Maybe we can actually get the correct models someday.

Any possibility of con range being 4k or 5k instead of the usual 3k? I'm finding with high res and large screen area (running 3 screens) it is very easy to lose the enemy in the weeds.

I wanna walkon an A6M5 Zero unit. Do I get to volunteer as a semi-regular walkon? Does it help that my Grandparents spent half of WW2 in a Internment Camp in Colorado? This is for Gma and Gpa Horito, whose sons fought with valor in Vietnam. This ones for them, I've spoke my piece.  :salute

I think that the odds are good that you can fly on the Japanese side as a walkon, but if you think you'll miss just one frame, you should register.

If you think you'll play in half of it, as a walkon, you certainly can request a side and probably get it; and once you fly with one side, you would fly with it the second time as well.  The CM assigning the walkons tries to accomodate preferences whenever possible.

I'll have to play as a walk on again - not a big deal, just not sure I can make every frame and not going to reduce someone else's opportunity for the scenario.

Zoney, the private forums have not opened yet, when they do you can ask your side CO if he would let you have access to the forums so you can fly as what I have hear called as a "dedicated walkon" this means that you will walkon the frames and not register, but still have access to the forums.

Assuming the role, the GL will not depend on you to be there, but will be thrilled if you can make it. There are always open slots on a side, specially towards the last frames of the scenario.

Post by: Brooke on April 06, 2011, 07:02:42 PM
Zoney, I don't think that will be no problem with some group taking you in as a dedicated walk on.

However, side GL's are not picked yet, and sides aren't organized yet, so there is no one right now that would have the authority to do that -- but they will soon.
