Nice pics  :aok

5th pic down in the first batch. Maj. Delong has what looks like Russian flag next to the Japanese kills. Wonder what that is about?

They were earned in Korea.

I wish these photos had links to the stories behind them. For example, Phillip Delong scored those stars in the Korean war, shooting down North Korean fighters - he was the first to down a Yak from the NVA.  So that picture technically is from the Korean War, sometime in the early 50's - would also explain the better quality picture with a better camera. Great pic too, Delong slightly out of focus on the second pilot explaining the engagement, probably a story from WWII... :D

Good stuff!

So who was the guy showing Delong his moves? He has 2 Japanese flags on his bird, so must have been a WWII vet also.

Yes story should come with every picture.  :devil

I'm sure that picture is taken from a post-war air show. The Corsair with 2 Japanese victory flags is in the 3-tone paint scheme used in 1943-44 on F4U-1A's, but it has the post-war canopy without the frames and round plate.

Perhaps the filming of Black Sheep Squadron?

Ouuu...maybe.  Was the Black Sheep production that adept in their details?

Quick Google Search.. I don't think the photo is from the set.

http://warbirdsnews.com/warbirds-news/poor-lambs-corsairs-baa-baa-blacksheep.html

It may be from the Gathering of Corsairs in Michigan last year, I think they had 12 or 13 at Thunder over Michigan.

BTW the photo that relates to Phil DeLong are re-enactors at a airshow about 7 years back!
For photos of the real DeLong there in one of my FB groups!

Major Billy Hovde, CO of 357FS/355FG post VE Day at Gablingen Germany. Billy was top 358FS ace and number two behind Henry Brown as top air to air ace of the 355th. He later commanded the 354FS so was the only officer to command all three squadrons during WWII.  One of the great characters and perhaps my fathers best friend along with Clay Kinnard..
