We received a phone call this week from a couple requesting an account closure because their son Jeff, aka Morpheus, had been in a serious motorcycle accident earlier this month and has been in a coma since then. His parents were attending to his banking business when they called. After I heard about this I wrote back to his parents asking for permission to share this news with his online friends so they could send their prayers and thoughts.
His dad sent me the following:
"Doug - thanks for your kind words. I know how much Jeff enjoyed Aces High. He's getting a little better each day, but for now he is still in a coma. He is under a great deal of sedation and is being given a lot of pain medication, so that is partly responsible for his condition. He is opening one eye and seems to respond to some of our questions, but it's tough to be sure. I don't see any reason not to share this with any friends he has online. He can surely use all the prayers he can get. Thanks again. Bob"
I don't have any other information at this time other than the accident took place on April 10th. Although I don't know Jeff personally, I know he's been around the game a long time and has a lot of friends in the community. I'll pass along any further information I receive.

Get well soon Morph.

Keeping morpheus and his family in our thoughts and prayers.
-
Hope jeff has a full recovery. The Coma is sometimes induced by the doctors with heavy sedation to aid recovery. Sadly most Bike accidents are the fault of another vehicle not paying attention.
Salute :salute Get Well

pyro, can you see if you can maybe get an address so that we may send cards to him just to let he and his family know that we're all thinking about them?
-
my thoughts to family and to morph for a quick recovery.
-
This instantly took me back to my best friend being in a drug induced Coma, a year before he was to be my best man in our wedding. I can understand what his family is going through right now and it is not easy to witness. My buddy had to undergo about 7 months of PT.
Jeff, you're a strong person and I know you're a fighter. To his family and friends, I wish you the most sincere offering of prayer through this troubling time.
Jeff, God Bless you and "<Salute> Yakparts."
I'm gonna go cry now, because this cut deep.
-
Get well soon Morph, allways tough news to hear a fellow biker down.
-
I've had the pleasure of talking to him on the phone but I never was able to meet him at the local Corsair airshow. Did someone contact Mars01? I knew they were also close and had a few Pitt flights together.
Any idea what hospital he is in? He is in my home state and I'm more than willing to send something to him...

You might want to call Pyro. I think this might be "one of those exceptions." :salute

I give my best to Morph.. he's a good guy. Hope you come out alright, bro.

You might want to call Pyro. I think this might be "one of those exceptions." :salute
Well, I want to make sure it is alright with his family. If it is, I don't mind being the vessel of the out pouring of affection for AH. If no one is interested I'll still send him something if his family approves.
I was considering some flowers and a die cast armour Spit, the plane he loved so much within AH and made a movie about it to the tune of Barry White (I think it was Barry anyway).
Pyro, any chance you can send his folks my e-mail address?
-
Morph is a genuinely great guy, and he's one of the ones who made playing Aces High so fun for so long. My best wishes and prayers to him and his family, and I hope he makes a fully recovery soon.
-
The Barry White movie that I remember was an F6F duel with ... Reschke? The only spit movie of his that I saw was 'Stuck in the middle' with Lev's Malta blue Spit5.
-
I have spent time with Jeff on a few occasions ... I live in the town next to his. This is the first I have heard of this and am completely floored at the moment (fighting back the tears).
Del ... Obviously I don't know where the accident took place and when, but there are only 2 hospitals that are real local to Southbury ... Waterbury Hospital ans St. Mary's Hospital ... and to the west of Southbury is Danbury Hospital.

Morph and Family are in our prayers.

Everyone is pulling for you bud. We want you back in the skies..

That's terrible news, I have always enjoyed Morph in game, whether flying with or against him. He is just one of those rare souls that brings an added dimension to the experience. My thoughts and prayers to his family. If there is any kind of card, virtual or otherwise, being prepared for him I'd like to participate. I know the Muppets are planning on something. In his condition a smile and a reminder of that which he obviously enjoyed so much will undoubtedly aid in the healing process...

I just spoke with Jeff's dad ...
Jeff is still in an induced coma and the doctors have no plans of bringing him out of this anytime soon. The want him to stay a still as possible to help in reducing the swelling of the brian. The have also removed a section of his skull to relieve the pressure.
He snapped a femur and they told his Dad that they wouldn't operate on that until they were satisfied with his brain swelling ... well they operated on the femur just the other day, so his Dad is taking that as a good sign.
As far as brain injury ... they have done all the scans, MRIs, etc but they really won't know the extent of any brain damage until Jeff is out of the coma and awake. According to his Dad, the doctors have told him that he is healing, in a general extent, very fast which his Dad is taking as another good sign. His Dad said ... "He is a tough and strong boy ... he will pull out of this".
I told them both of the outpouring of well wishes and prayers from the AH community and they were completely blown away. They never realized how many "virtual" friends that Jeff has.
His Dad gave me his email address and told me that I could also call them anytime to check on Jeff's progress ... which I will and post it here.
-
Best wishes for a speedy and full recovery.... :salute
-
Slap, do you mind coordinating the AH community? It definitely appears you have good contact with his family and you live a bit closer than I do as well.
I'd like to donate some money for the flowers/armour die cast model/ or whatever else is decided on.

Hope he gets better

Gratefully Appreciate you posting this updat, Slap......... to sadden to say much of anything else at this time except....
sending prayers for recovery and hopeful thoughts to Jeff and his Family during this enduring time.....
I am happy to have the thought that Morph's agressive go get em nature will only help him recover that much faster.... :salute :pray

No I don't mind.
His parents asked not to have their address posted on the BBS, but if anyone wants to send him a card feel free to send it to ...
RJ Hoyt
C/O Jeff Baldasare <--- please make sure this is there ... I don't want to mix up my personal mail and his ... thanks

I will make sure that he and/or his parents get it. Seeing that he is in intensive care, flowers would not be a good thing as they are not allowed in an intensive care unit ... a simple card would be great ... I am sure he would be more than pleased to read them when he is able.

I have just started riding, well last year, and this is a frightening thing. I just found yesterday out about an old HS classmate who died on his bike a few years ago (I was out of touch with most HS classmates)... now this. :(
Hey Slappy, if you have the resources PM me, sort of a tribute to him...
I have a bunch of movies, some made by him I need help discerning if they are his, I forgot on a few. I have the full versions:
didn't he make the film AH: past and present?
I have a Fubar movie with him in the credits "with love Morph"
"Magic Carpet Ride" I know is his
"Pink Panther" I know is his
Did he make "Serving Taters" with Wetrat?
"To The Top" me in 190 he made
Did he make the WoooWooo movie with Nath?
Did he make Yucca in the P47?
Whatever movies he did I have the full versions of those listed. I'd love to upload them somewhere everyone can see and make sure he has full credit. I know he did more, I just can't say which of the tons of saved movies I have he did.
Let me know, some of these are above 80mb, I don't know if I can youtube all of them. I don't have any server space, or bandwidth, I apologize, but I hope the media can contribute.
I'd love the community to see how important, and great he is. I'm genuinely worried for his health, and it's uncomfortable. I'd love to do anything to help out and if enough people pray for someone as awesome as him the better the chances.
-
Slap is right about the issue, cards and such are a good idea for now.
We can approach the subject again later when he improves and the restrictions on items aren't as rigid as they are now.
-
Thanks for the update and the address Slap.
I'm glad his folks are optimistic. It has to be a horrible time for them.

Muppets gonna host some it looks like, uploading now, but 350+ MB gonna take a while and I gotta go to bed.
Watch for links of Morpheus's vids. They are incredible, and show a true talent in many venues.
Morph, we are all thinking of you. <S> and God Please don't take a soul from us as talented, and cherished by so many as Jeff. I'll say another prayer for the best.
-
<S> Morph get well man.
Is there anyway we can get this post to stay on top of the General discussion like a sticky so we can keep track of his progress?

He made so many movies some time ago I really couldn't tell unless I saw them. He has a real nack for matching the music to the action. He made one for me and I have since lost it in a hard drive crash, so I am hoping that one of them is mine.

Also the classic wooohoooo video he had posted.
I'll be sending a card to you in the next day or so.

Morpheus is a great guy, a very good stick (I remember with pleasure the few times we crossed our paths... needless to say I was whacked every time!), and a very talented movie maker. I have plenty of his movies, not only the one he did in AH, even the some of the ones he did in LockOn... every time the game felt stale or I wanted to get in the right mood to play or I just wanted to dream flying, all I had to do was to choose one of his movies and watch it. And, yes, those movies even helped me to develop better fighting skills!
didn't he make the film AH: past and present? Yes, it's his
I have a Fubar movie with him in the credits "with love Morph" indeed, another of his works
"Magic Carpet Ride" I know is his
"Pink Panther" I know is his
Did he make "Serving Taters" with Wetrat? don't know about this
"To The Top" me in 190 he made
Did he make the WoooWooo movie with Nath? yes
Did he make Yucca in the P47? not sure which one you're referring to, but, if it's the one I have in mind (file name is 56thJugs), I'm not sure it's his
There are many, many other great Morph's movies, like the one Delirium was referring to, "My darling", a SpitXVI dancing at the sound of Barry White's voice, "TehF6", a crazy, long DA fight between Morph and Wadke, "Wilbuz", the movie Kazaa was talking about, "Boom" and "Nomak", "PWNED" (sometimes people just can't kill you!), "Rooster" (more Nath!), and others I have on my HD... I always craved for new Morph's movies! Oh, and, Slapshot, of course I have "My way", the movie Morph did with you as protagonist.
I'd love to upload them somewhere everyone can see and make sure he has full credit. I know he did more, I just can't say which of the tons of saved movies I have he did.
MrBucket has a website, Aces High Movie Database (http://www.aceshighmovies.com/), it seems that now it's undergoing maintenance, you could ask MrBucket if you can upload more movies in there. I'll do that myself.
I was really saddened to discover what happened to Morph and I'm grateful for the news Pyro and Slapshot provided. He's a strong man and a fighter, I do hope he'll get better soon and will fully recover.
-
I am crushed to hear this. Morph and i used to talk all the time about home life and girls and all. He is an awesome guy and i had the greatest pleasure in playing with him in the MA and the DA. Have so many memorable fights with him.
Here is "T3H F6F" by Morph that he made dueling me:

I will make sure that he and/or his parents get it. Seeing that he is in intensive care, flowers would not be a good thing as they are not allowed in an intensive care unit ... a simple card would be great ... I am sure he would be more than pleased to read them when he is able.

I just got off of the phone with Jeff's father. Jeff is wiggling around, moving his arms and legs, but is still in a coma. He is only on Oxygen, Morphine and antibiotics. Jeff is breathing on his own and is off of the ventilator. He still has trauma, which is why the brain won't let him wake up yet. But Jeff is a healthy man and will pull through. Sorry this took so long ...
I just spoke with Jeff's Dad. Jeff is out of intensive care and has been transferred to a special Rehab Hospital in New Britain, CT.
He is awake and somewhat aware but in what they call an "agitated state" ... it's like he is in a jungle or a dark room and is constantly looking for the way out. It is hard for him to concentrate on anything for even a short period. The last 2 weeks that he was in the regular medical hospital, he was in this agitated state, but due to the level of care that they can provide, they were needing to sedate him and cuff him to the bed so that he would not rip out all the tubes that were attached to him. When the Rehab hospital found out, they insisted that he be transferred right away. In order for him to get better, he has to be awake, agitated or not. He can't be healed if he is constantly "under". The rehab hospital has the staff and level of care needed for this type of rehab.
This agitated state, as his father describes, is exhausting physically and mentally for Jeff, yet he won't sleep. Because of this, they do have to sedate him during the day so that he will get some sleep ... the brain also does a good amount of healing during sleep periods. Jeff is also taking other meds to help him concentrate (ritalin) and some other drugs to try and bring him to a calmer state.
His Dad said that he is what they call ... in "level 4" ... where the top level is 10, so he has a ways to go and it isn't going to happen overnight.
Physically, the doctors said that if his brain could tell him to walk, he could walk immediately, he is still in great physical shape and his Dad said that looking at him, you would never know that he was in such a terrible accident.
He is recognizing his parents, siblings and other family members. He is able to have visitors and the doctors are even encouraging friends to visit ... any friendly familiar faces that can bring "good" memories are encouraged and may help drag him back to us quicker.
Myself, Mars, and Badboy are planning on visiting him tomorrow night ... I will post again after the visit.
The letters that I received on behalf of Jeff ... I will deliver tomorrow ... I told his Dad that I would be bringing them to the hospital and will leave them there for them to read and respond to ... and for Jeff to read later on when he gets to that point.
Many thanks to the letter writers ...

Oh my god I can't believe I missed this thread. I was wondering why I haven't seen him in a while.
Good to hear he is out of the coma and awake and aware. With things like that it really is a waiting game before they really return to normal. I hope everything goes well for him and for all you pilots out there, if you see Morpheus in the sky don't think that some silly little accident will make him an easy kill, hes very much a tough cookie in and out the virtual skies.

I am very sad to hear about this.
Its insane I even caught this actually. I have been hooked on Warcraft the last few years and have not played AH or even checked this board in I cant remember how long.....years. The thought crossed my mind to log on and have a look around and found this.....
Jeff and I were good friends for quite a while, we spent countless hours in the DA together, we would BS on the phone from time to time. We talked about getting together IRL but never did mostly due to location. We enjoy the same stuff..... Firearms, cars and bikes, females (duhh) and at the time AH.
I remember before his handle was Morph and he went by Jeffa.....
I remember him as well spoken and intelligent, always fun to be around and generally a good guy. He could definitely be a pain in the bellybutton at times but I liked the fact that Jeff was never afraid to be Jeff. I think the last time we spoke was summer of '05 <----shrug> not sure though. Warcraft warp's the sense of space and time :frown:
I have prayed for his full recovery and I will continue to do so.

Where do I start ?
I don't know how many of you have ever seen a person with a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) but I can assure you that it is scary to say the least. To know a person before they suffered a TBI and then to see them after the TBI is very sobering. At this point, Jeff is unable to walk, has a very hard time vocalizing and hard time concentrating on any one thing for an extended period of time.
Anyhow ... Mars01, BadBoy58, and I went to the Rehab Hospital. As we walked into the room, I wasn't really sure that it was Jeff until I recognized his tribal tattoo on his bicep. He has lost 50+ pounds and is now weighing in at 129 lbs.
Mars01 led the way and as he approached Jeff's bed, you could see that he did recognize Mars right away. Mars is a hard guy not to recognize ... 6 ft, 260 lbs, shaved bald head ... he looks like Mr. Clean on steroids. Jeff has spent the most amount of time with Mars flying in Mars's Pitt and filming a lot of Mars's flights. Jeff stretched out his hand and shook Mars's hand. Jeff then noticed (not recognized) BadBoy and I and presented his hand for us to shake, so he knew that there we new people in the room and felt obliged to shake our hands.
We started right out mentioning Aces High ... Aces High "handles " ... Squaddie names ... mentioned all the flights he had in the Pitts ... basically things that would invoke past happy memories. After awhile "we" got more comfortable and kept talking to him like we would if he were 100% ok.
Mars moved from the bedside and I slipped right in there so that Jeff could concentrate on me. Most of his concentration was to whoever was on the left side of his bed. I kept talking to him, busted his balls as I would despite his condition, and I got a smile out of him and he did say my last name loud and clear.
When BadBoy was at the bedside, Jeff tried real hard to say ... "BadBoy" ... but it came out like "BoBo", but it was obvious, to us, that he did recognize BadBoy.
Jeff is in a very "tactile" stage ... he reaches out for your hand, tries to pull you into him (despite losing all the weight, he still is strong as an Ox), kisses your hand or rubs your hand against his cheek, runs his hand over your face. He will do this for a couple of minutes or so and then roll over to the other side of the bed and rest for like 20 seconds and then rolls back and reaches for you again. I am thinking that he is trying so hard and it just mentally exhausts and frustrates him and he needs a short break to recharge.
We stayed for over an hour talking to him (busting balls) ... holding his hands, pulling against his pull, grabbing his feet ... just touching and stimulating him in different ways trying to make him feel that we were comfortable with him and he could be comfortable with us. At the very end of the visit, you could see that he was truly exhausted and when he rolled to the other side of the bed, he pretty much fell asleep, so we left.
We stayed awhile longer and visited with Jeff's girlfriend, who vacated the room for us, and talked with her for about 1/2 an hour. Jeff was traveling at a high rate of speed and didn't have a helmet on. He was traveling up hill, on a left hand corner, laid the bike down, rode the bike on it's side until it came in contact with the grass edge, which in turn flipped the bike horizontally, launching him into a huge oak tree. Jeff impacted the oak tree on his right side so that is where his head was hit, he broke his right collar bone and snapped his right femur in half.
Looking at him, you would never know that he was in such a terrible accident ... not a mark on him outside of the stitch scar on his scalp where they removed (and replaced) his skull bone to relieve the pressure on the brain.
I personally think that Jeff will be alright, but boy is it going to be a "long row to hoe". He is in an excellent facility and has a nurse/nurse's aid with him 24 x 7. Even when he has visitor's, they do not leave the room but rather pull to the back of the room and wait in a chair. He is already on a rehab regime so time will tell.
The 3 of us have decided that we are going to try and visit him every Tuesday.
-
Good update... :pray to continue....

thanks for sharing that slappy.

Slapshot,
I had a former student who was in a traffic accident on graduation night. The car he was riding in got t-boned right where he was sitting, and he also suffered a TBI and multiple fractures. Several other students and I went to see him several times in the hospital while he was in a coma for most of the summer. As the doctors expalined to us then, TBI patients need all the stimulation of all the senses they can get to help them return back to anything resembling their former, normal condition.
Even though he has trouble responding vocally and in words to you, the fact that he recognizes you and tries to communicate is a very good sign. He may well be able to understand everything you say, but is unable to respond to you in a way you can understand. Talking to him as you would normally is, as I recall, the best way to go about it to help his recovery.
My student eventually came out of the coma, and returned to school, although he was restricted to a wheelchair. The last time I saw him (1999 IIRC) he was still having difficult in speaking and walking, but had improved tremendously compared to his earlier state. As you said, Jeff "has a long row to hoe", but with help and care from friends like you and his family, I am hoping and praying for the best. It's nice to hear that people from this game care enough for one another that they act like family in times of tragedy like this. We'll continue to keep Jeff in our prayers as well.
-
Slap, Thank you for the update sir, it makes me terribly sad to hear the state he is in. I will pray for him even more. It is also uplifting that he recognizes and responds to visitors, I wish all the best for him. If you go visit him again let him know that tard Mustaine is praying for him.

For as much as we yell and scream and get mad with each other ingame, its absolutely amazing to see how much we are really a community, a family outside of the game. I don't know Morpheus, but even I got emotional after reading Slap's update. A huge :salute to Mars, BadBoy, and SlapShot for what you have done and will continue to do for him through his rehab. I knew the name but never the person, but I gotta say, it is gonna be great to see him back in game, even on the boards for that matter.

Thanks for the update, I got a little choked up about how he was and what hes been through, I can only imagine how he feels now.

Thanks for the update Slap--
and even more for what you guys are doing. Seeing people you know suffer in chronic illness is so terribly uncomfortable that victims end up battling isolation and loneliness as much as anything. The contact and conversation you're giving him will not only help neurologically, but its an incredibly valuable gift for Morph emotionally.
<S> to you, and prayers for Morpheus....

First and foremost continued hope and prayers for a full recovery for Morpheus. :pray Second, a big salute to Slapshot, Mars01, & BadBoy58 for showing why this community is a bit more than just a game. :salute

Good update Slap, sums it up perfectly. It was really hard seeing Jeff like that. Anyone who has met Jeff, would remember him as a stocky guy with almost no fat, so after a loss of 50lbs muscle he looks very gaunt. As Slap said he is very frustrated and understandably impatient with his inability to talk and get up. One of the funnier/harder moments was watching Jeff trying to get out of bed, like we were there to get him out of there... It was funny, in a typical Jeff way that he would be trying to get the hell out of there, and hard to see how very, very frustrated and understandably scared he is. It's like his mind wants to do so much more than his body and mind can.
Like slap said, we plan on going up there at least once a week for as long as it takes to get him through this. I want to thank everyone for the outpouring of prayers and support. It truly is impressive and special. :salute
-
Thanks for the update guys. Keep doing what your doing! I'm sure it is a huge help and will most definitely speed Jeff's recovery.
A BIG <S> to you guys!

still wishing him well down here, sure hope he makes a full recovery. :pray

So sorry to hear about Jeff's accident. As a fellow motorcyclist I hate to hear about another rider down.
20 years ago my Father-In-Law suffered a TBI. While his accident was no where near as bad as Jeffs...the result was very similar. My Father-In-Law fell off a boat dock onto a cement pad, struck his head against the cement before entering the water. Friends were there to pull him out but he had already gone into a siezure.
His injury leaves him with the same problems Jeff is experiencing. He can't concentrate on something for too long, his balance and co-ordiantion are not as good as they were and he struggles sometimes when talking to others. If he exerts himself physically, he can go into siezures.
The first few months/years were the hardest for him to adjust to. His doctor had him on multiple medications until they found a dosage that would work. The recovery is a slow process that you just cant rush. This was very hard for my Father-In-Law since he is a bit impatient.
Now he leads a productive life, albiet with limitations. He can still drive, go on walks with his wife, talk and converse with family and friends. If you just met him, you would never know he was injured. However, he has learned his limitations. He knows if he stays up to late, tries focusing on something too hard or exerts himself too much, it will cause him to go into a siezsure and that may take a day to recover from.
I wish Jeff the best...although I have never met him it sounds like he and my Father-In-Law share the same "zest" for living. He just needs to be patient (easier said than done) and work with his doctors.

S! Softail. Brave of you to share your pain with us.
Morph is going to make a 99.9% recovery, if not 100.

still wishing him well down here, sure hope he makes a full recovery. :pray
I always thought you were the ... :devil

talking of devils I know some dark magic that will help Jeff. If you believe in it then it will work. If you dont, thats fine, dont bother. If many of you join me, our suffering will be minimised and Jeff's recovery aided. You might think I'm crazy, I dont care. If you truly want to make a small sacrifice to aid Jeff repeat this sentance either out loud, in your head, or in text here. Or all three.
I wish upon myself a small discomfort in the coming weeks. Undeserved as yet, I desire to make some sacrifice in the future to relieve and repair some of Jeff's troubles. I understand what I ask.
It's up to you. Do not if you are not prepared to go through with your payment.

Slappy.......
May I assume that since you are going to make return visits that you are willing to take a card/letter to Jeff? If so, I send it to the addy you previously posted?
Thx....David

!!S!! good luck bro :pray

Wow.... to have such great friends...... from a game. I have to admit slap, the story of yalls visit pretty much brought tears to my 50 year old eyes. Morph is still in my families prayers daily.... and I might add that you, Slapshot, Mars01, and BadBoy58 are also in our prayers now. Thanks for being type folks we would all like to think we are.

Yeah feels like forever. Its been at least a couple years, maybe more.
FWIW I think what you (and others) are doing with regards to Jeff is very rare and shows your truly great character.

I am very happy he has survived this terrible accident and that it appears he has the mental capacity to regain his life back. I wish to hell he had been wearing a helmet though.
A big Thanks to you guys who have taken your personal time to visit Morph and share your thoughts and hopes with us.
Good luck Morpheus and return just as soon as you are able :salute

Dude. I flippin' hate you now.
Broken toe, busted pipes in the downstairs bathroom (all of which had to be replaced). Oh yeah, and a killer chest cold that won't go away.
If this turns to Bronchitis, you're in trouble.
Seriously though, if this is what's workin, rock on. Hope Jeff gets better that much quicker- and if this is it, I say bring on more! I'll take more!

Good for you rebel! Thank you for joining me, from my heart. I had a big arguement with the misses the next day, still not worked out. I also developed a cyst on my thigh that has got infected and needs lancing. errgh. Coincedence? who knows. I hope morph has had a minor breakthrough this week or we are just unlucky people.

The 3 of us went to visit Jeff last night.
There was a marketable difference between last week and this week ...
His "focus" was much better ... he had a clearer look in his eyes.
He vocalization was much improved. At times he has a hard time forming sentences and at other times he just blurts out a complete and perfectly understandable sentence. Most impressive was when he girlfriend was leaving she said "bye bye Jeff, I love you" ... he looked her straight in the eye and said (with slight slurring) ... "bye bye Jodi, I love you too". This type of vocalization was not apparent last week.
He expressed many more emotions ... smiling, smirking, eyebrows raising/lowering ... depending upon the conversation and as it progressed. He has a "peg" in his abdomen still and that is used to give him his medicine. The nurse came into the room and he knew exactly why she was there and his facial expressions and demeanor changed immediately telling/showing us ... he didn't like this one bit but knew that it was something that he needed to do and will put up without a fight. Once she was done, he demeanor changed right back.
He wasn't as agitated as he was last week, but he does keep trying to get out of bed and gets "pissed" because he can't. His father said that he has been showing "anger" in the last couple of days, but as the 3 of us discussed this on our ride home, we believed that his "anger" was a good thing ... it is a display of emotion and his anger seems to be directed at "something" ... which is he wants out of that place.
He is eating soft foods (and supplemented still with a feeding tube), so his motor ability to eat properly seems to be ok. Don't know when he will be reverted to regular food.
We stayed much longer this time than last time, and he was attentive the whole time we were there, unlike last week, when we kinda tired him out and he just rolled over and went to sleep.
I really have no "bad news" to relay, and the 3 of us left the hospital feeling much better than we did last week, but not kidding ourselves that Jeff still has a long way to go ... at least he is on his way forward in recovery and we have not seen anything that makes us feel that he is stalled or going backwards in his recovery.
The 3 of us are going to go in on a digital frame and load it up with pictures of him with Mars01 and the Pitts, different airplanes, and stuff that we think will stimulate past good memories.
Till next week ...
-
Good news. Thanks for the Update SlapShot :salute

We discussed, at some stage, that we would bring a laptop and fire up some of the videos he did ... we're thinking the infamous Birdo/NathBDP WoooooooWooooooo video may garner some laughs out of him.

I just found this thread. I don't look at the forums much. Wow, what a story. Morpheus you are one lucky soul brother. Not so much that you survived (thank God for that) but for the friends you have and the constant concern for you and your family.
I have fought you in the air and if you are half as good fighting your way back to recovery as you are in a plane then we expect nothing short of great news on your health.
There are a lot of good people here Jeff that care about you and your buddies are doing a great job keeping us all informed. When you get to the point of reengaging your cartoon advisories give our squad a heads up. We would like to send you some flight gear from one of our sponsors.
GO to our website (www.HellsAngels5by5.com) and take a look at some of our toys listed under flight gear. No, you can't have the $250,000 flight simulator. I think Slash has first right on that one.
Pick out a couple of things you need and I will get them to you.
Slap, please make sure Morpheus gets this message. We need our pilot back in the air as soon as possible.
Our Very Best Regards:

Thanks for the updates, Slappy. It was hard to read how Morph was doing the first time you guys went to see him, it's been a relief to know that he's getting better and has the will and anger needed for a quick and (hopefully) total recover. Tell him I'm rooting for him, from here in Italy! :)
Hell, I wish I could find that video.
Banshee, IIRC someone posted a link to it in this very thread. Anyway, I'll upload it ASAP and post the link here.

Hello All,
Yeah we went last week to see Jeff. Sorry for the delay, I had a contest to get to Thursday and Slappy was off to a Karate tourny Wed so we are late with the update.
We brought an LCD picture frame that we loaded up with pictures he had taken from Corsairs Over CT, F14s at Republic and stuff flying around with me in the Pitts. I had my laptop and we watched some of the videos he had done as well. Overall I think the reality of what has happened is becoming more and more apparent to him. When we showed him a video - he and I flying the Pitts, Jeff doing rolls and loops etc. he looked at me and said, garbled, "This Sucks". He is having a hard time speaking still and control of his left side is still sluggish and weak. He has filled out some and is looking more like he used to.
They did say he was working on walking again and that with two people holding him up he was taking some steps. He is on real food now so that is a plus and they are hoping to take the tube out of his stomach this week. Some friends of his, that were there for the first time, had shown up a little after us and since they only allow 2 people in the room at a time, so as not to overstimulate him, we ducked out to the hallway and gave them some time with Jeff. When we were finally able to go back in and see him, he was passed out cold sleeping like a baby, so we left.
I think we were all hoping for more improvement from the previous week as you can imagine. You just hope to walk in there and see good old Jeff back. I know it is early and Jeff has a long road ahead of him but this definitely tempered my mood as we left. He is improving slowly, his frustration levels are high and patience is being tested. He really wants to get the hell out of there. They had him outside for a little bit last week and he is going through therapy a couple times a day.
I was talking to his mom and she mentioned the doctors wanted her to bring in something that he would know and could take apart and put together, something familiar to him and not just some sort of puzzle. I am kinda coming up blank and hoping something hits me this week. With all the crap Jeff was into this should be easy, right LOL.
I can't thank this community enough for their support and outpouring of compassion and care for Jeff. We are going back Thursday this week and will be sure to update you again, maybe get some pics...
Thanks again everyone and keep the prayers for Jeff's complete recovery coming.
-
Get him a model airplane kit. Not the complicated type that needs glue and knives, something basic to start on. Maybe just a little slingshot glider or something that takes 5 mins to put together and could be thrown out a window or something..
Thanks for the update. Still sending love.
-
Thanks for the update Mars. His parents are holding out ok I hope.
-
Look at it this way... Though it may suck as he said himself, every day for him (in therapy etc) is better than the previous one. Things are looking up.
-
Morph..Ya get better soon m8!
<S!> :aok
-
:pray
-
Well we went Thursday to see Morph.
We got to the room and it was empty ... :uhoh
We found him down the hall in an area where they have tables and a TV and he was eating dinner. His Mom, Dad, and girlfriend were sitting with him. He looked at us and you could see that he recognized us immediately and smiled and put his hand out for us to shake it.
I was pleasantly surprised to see him feeding himself (along with his Mom helping every once in awhile). He was even drinking from a cup on his own (with some spillage). He was much more alert and animated this time and his conversation abilities are becoming stronger. He is still slurring some of his words, but at least he is paying attention to conversations and participating. He still wants to get the heck out of that place. At the end of the visit, he was rather intent on undoing his wheelchair seat belt and trying to "get the the F* out of this place".
It has become quite evident now that the left side of his body/face is "weak" and they continue to try and get him to use the left hand and arm more. I was getting him to arm wrestle me left handed and there is nothing wrong with his strength but more of a coordination concern.
Things are progressing nicely as far as I am concerned (I am no doctor) but still not trying to kid myself that Jeff will be Jeff in a month or 2 ... I keep saying this ... He has a long row to ho ... and he has just started.
Till next week ...
-
Thanks for the update slap!

Thanks for the update Slap, will keep sending thoughts and prayers his way till someone says otherwise.

Glad to hear he is recovering nicely and thanks for keep everyone informed!

Well ... we went to see him last night.
When we first went into the room, the aid pointed to Mars and asked Jeff ... who is this guy ... and Jeff spouted out "Rob" and then the aid asked if he knew his last name and to our surprise ... he immediately said, without thought Rob's last name ... to us ... that was huge.
For the rest of the visit, he wouldn't shut the F**K up ... his conversational skills are improving immensely. He can keep up with a conversation, but at times drifts away. He jokes around and busts balls during a conversation which I consider a real good sign of improvement ... he has and displays a sense of humor.
Where he isn't doing good is his continued frustration at being in the hospital and not really realizing why he is in there. This leads to him being pissed off at times and it usually rears it's ugly head when he is supposed to be doing his physical therapy, so with that, he is behind on re-learning how to walk and strengthening his left arm and leg.
We got into a little trouble at the hospital last night ... :devil ... Jeff is only supposed to have 2 visitor at a time. Prior to last night we pretty much blew that rule off, but we learned from his Dad that if he has too much interaction with people, at the same time, he later tries to process what transpired during the visit(s), and that causes him to stay awake much of the night. That in turn leaves him tired and cranky for the next day and he goes off on the physical therapy aides and they cancel his sessions.
Personally, I think it's an excuse by the hospital ... but we will try to be good next visit ...

Thanks again to you folks for taking time out of yalls schedule to visit and then report to the community. This seems to be going well. We are looking forward to the day he can return.

Slap - Try and help him see that re-learning how to walk and getting his left side back in shape = getting out of there.
Thanks for the update.
-
Thanks for the update Slap,
I wonder is the conditioning for the left arm just strength? or strength and coordination? If it's matter or hand eye coordination would taking a laptop and a joystick in and make him try and fly a bit with his left hand be helpful?

I have not been here for a while... every now and then i feel the need to drop by my old stomping grounds and see whats happening
I saw morphs name and thought it was gonna be someone ranting and raving with morphs usualy sort of reply (I see he is saving that for the physical therapest :) ) hehehe...
I was shocked to read about the accident and to tell you the truth I could not read through the 27 pages I had to jump to the end and know if he was ok...
I am glad to know he is getting up and about, somone give him a big <S> from Mussie.....
EDIT: just read the whole thread.... man its been a long road for him <S> to everyone here for the support you have given... that ladies and gents is the one of the great things that i miss about this little family....
-
Great News Slap...thanks for the updates!!!!
-
Well ...
We went last Wednesday ... things are still progressing. His conversational skills are still improving as is his memory. His physical rehab is still suffering some due to his frustration and getting pissed at the staff. Once he gets pissed ... session over. According to his parents, on Tuesday he did manage, with a walker and an aid by his side, walk the 175 ft isle ... twice ... and did a pretty good job at it. Also, he is using the bathroom ... not all the time ... but still is getting there some of the time and that is considered a "big deal".
He is putting weight on and is beginning to look like the old Morph. All in all, I think that he is looking at a good year to 2 years of rehab to come back to almost 100% and no one really knows if he will ever be 100%, but I am sure he is going to make a fight of it.
-
tell him we're pulling for him.... best wishes,

Slapshot,
Great to hear that it sounds like Morph has a good roll started. And anger is a very good thing as long as it keeps motivating him to fight, and not sit down and quit. All of us should remember, as we continue to root for Morpheus, that as tough as he has had it thus far, these are the easy times.
I've gone through it. So, keep kicking him in the bellybutton until he kicks you back! And if he starts losing his drive, pound it back into him!
Keep givin' it hell, Morph! It's on you, brother!

I was wondering the same, mensa. Try closing your eyes and clearing your mind and listen to your first strong instinct. I just did and mine says morph is stuck against a wall that he needs to get over in order to progress at a faster rate but right now things are troubling him in some kind of stalemate. Don't ask me why but that what i felt when i asked nothing for an answer. Bring on the pitch forks and torches.

Try it, only takes a few seconds to listen to your instinct if you can clear your mind. You can only be right or wrong.
Even better, Try asking an impossible question and then NOT answering on instinct in your mind right away one way or the other. It's difficult not to hear an answer even if you try not to. ;)

i dunno furby its just my first clean thought of the day came to, just rambling away ignore me as usual.
-
I was wondering the same, mensa.
Scary ... He is not quite at a stalemate, but probably is not progressing as fast as he can due to his frustration, which triggers his temper.
I have mentioned his temper before, but last week, for the first time, we got a first-hand look at his frustration/temper ... it came on a fast as flippin' a switch ... gritting teeth & fist clenched.
This was brought on by our appearance ... he saw us and proceeded to try and get out of bed to "go with you guys". The aid and I tried to convince him to stay in bed but he forced himself out of the bed and to his feet (he still can't walk un-aided) so we helped him into his wheelchair. Once in the wheelchair, he was ready to "get the F$%% out of here". The aid blocked his way and in the blink of an eye ... he was ready to open up a can of whoop ass. We got him somewhat calmed down, but he still insisted on leaving and just the sight of the aid would set him off.
Needless to say ... we didn't stay long at all. We are going to go back this week, but if our presence brings on that type of behavior again, we will probably have to change our visiting schedule to maybe once a month.
-
Well, for now his headstrong attitude might be an impediment, but I have to figure it will be a blessing in the long run while he works to overcome this.
Thanks for keeping us updated, Slap.
-
Again thanks for the update Slap. There is good and bad to be understood from your post. I hope he is able to cope.
-
The frustration is a good thing. Stress and love breed creativity, and creativity is progress.
Big up to you SlapShot for keeping us filled in. I'm not a very pious person, but my thoughts are very much with you guys.
-
remember what started you and dont look down on those who still have a way to go...or have you understood nothing so far?
:salute
Wow Batty thats deep! :aok
Slap,I read what you just wrote and it had an effect on me. Having faced long term rehab myself I know what Morpheus is going through. All that you can do is support him, dont let him spite his self, and forgive him for his reactions.
Remember, when he sees his friends it's a stark reminder of what used to be,he's at the stage of being PO'd at everything.Thats good and will pass hopefully as he heals, till then just keep reasuring him.
Thx Slap. :salute
keep the updates coming,I reads this thread often!

ty for the updates slappy! hopefully with time morphys frustrations will calm down a little bit so that he can progress faster. i couldnt imagine what he is going through, he just wants to get up and hang with the boys and he can't right now. thanx again for all you guys are doing for him and us by keeping us posted!!!

We aren't going to give up on him at all ... we just don't want to exacerbate the problem.
We believe that his frustration stems from the fact that he doesn't really realize, at this point, that he was in such a terrible accident and the results of that accident is why he is in the rehab hospital. He doesn't understand why he can't go home and that pisses him off.
-
Much as I expected Slap!!
Hopefully that will change at some point.
I truely feel for him and his family,I know what I put mine through. :o

That blank you get of just before and during an accident really is perplexing.. Now you're living something, minutes later it never happened. Unreal.
-
No idea what Jeff is capable of right now, but I read that they are doing incredible things with music therapy for head injuries these days. For whatever reason, it seems that patients with brain injuries may respond well to basic music lessons.
-
Badboy and I were able to see Jeff this past Wednesday. We walked in and he was lying in bed, covers up to his chin and his feet sticking out the other end. He was watching NCIS and didn't even acknowledge us until the first commercial. I thought that as pretty funny. We stayed about an hour and a half, not talking much, just watching TV and cracking some jokes. Jeff was there and understood most of our comments and jokes, he laughed at a few, we talked a little about his therapy and then we left. It was nice to see him relaxed and mellow, especially after last week. Hopefully his brain is starting to rewire itself, but his speech is still very rough and he still has a hard time getting long sentences out. He seems to be making progress but at more of a geological pace.
Till next week...
-
A while back I had a friend who had a similar situation. You could read the frustration in his eyes as he tried to communicate, and as he slowly boiled over in frustration he would start ranting and raving nonsensical things out of his mouth. His doctor one day explained to me and a buddy that John most likely had the words correct in his head, but because all the "wiring" was jumbled, he was unable to put the words together in a coherent sentence, and that he had to relearn -or actually his brain had to remap those routes for his speech patterns. It took John a long time to get to the point of acceptance of his situation or actually "knowing" the predicament he was in, before he actually began to improve. Most of his good days were when we would just sit with him and not say anything, just be with him, I think loneliness was his biggest enemy. He still has a slur in his speech, but he is "all there" now. What you guys are doing is probably the most important part of his healing process, I know John thought that he would become the odd man out because he was suddenly different, at least that is what he eventually told me, probably more than just that.
Anyway, the point is, you guys are doing a truly good thing seeing him, taking time out of your life to share it with someone in need.

Wow! I don't read the BB much. sorry to hear about the accident, sounds like Jeff is getting better and I'm real impressed with the support he is getting from all these people in the virtual and real world. it is apparent to me that his anger and frustration is a withdrawl symptom from AHII, sure he has some serious brain trauma, but he knows what's going on and he needs his Jstick but no one will let him get to it. all kidding aside I have flown many, many times with and against him (i died against him) and have talked with him many times, I do hope his brain can rewire around the messed up patches and he is able to get on with his life ASAP. I too ride and it saddens me to hear that he has laid it down, but that is one of the many risks we rider face to do what we love. what I have been reading about the brain, it sounds like he might be able to recover with time and help from those that are close to him. I do wish him a speedy recovery and my thoughts go out to him and his family. I salute all those that have kept us up to date on his progress, tell him Smitty is rooting for him.
thanks, Ausmith1 (smitty) VF-15 Satan's Playmates

You all seeing him soon?
-
A couple of them try to make it every week. Real life gets in the way some times, but they are there enough to make pests out of themselves :D
-
I know, just like hearing news :).
-
My thoughts are with Morph and his family tonight.
From reading this, my girlfriend and I will be wearing helmets while skiing outback this winter season with no exception. Reading this story saddened me; I hope he recovers.

Should be about a year for a recovery. My buddy was about that long and was worse. Speech was the toughest for my buddy.

Keep pissing him off, Slap! That anger will turn to determination and motivation. The more he is reminded that there are other places to go beside therapy and meal time, the more he's gonna bear down in therapy to speed his recovery!
At least that's got me moving when I was paralyzed.
Rock on, Morph! :rock
-
I will say a prayer for Morpheus.

We went to see Morph last night ...
He is doing well. He is still putting on some weight and it really looks good on him. He said that he is lifting weights as part of his PT so he now looks very much like the last I saw him before the accident. Speaking with one of his aids (who is a real cool guy) he is now walking unaided for about 40 ft. I think that he won't be leaving that place until he is completely ambulatory.
I missed last weeks visit, but from Mars01 and BadBoy58 told me ... he has found TV again. I guess he was so zoned in on the TV, he pretty much ignored them (not on purpose). Last night he was zoned in on the TV again, but this time we forced him to pay attention by constantly asking him questions and keep the conversation going non-stop. Personally, I think zoning on the TV is a good sign in the fact that he is "zoned" and concentrating intensely on what he is watching thus exercising the brain with all the input.
There isn't any mind blowing news to report ... just that he is still on the road to recovery and he is still progressing. I think with an accident like this, the progression of recovery shows some stunning progressions at the beginning, but then it reaches a point where those stunning progressions disappear and all progress from this point on will still come, but only as time allows and the effort put forth.
TxMom ... he (I) read your card last night and he was most appreciative of your kind words and thoughts from you and your family.
-
thanks for the update :salute
-
Good to hear he's still improving. :aok

That news alone is "mind blowing". Glad to hear he's progressing well.

:) I'm glad.
Thanks for your visits with him, and for always being attentive to posting about that.

Bat ... I don't think that that has really set in yet ... that will be key tho.
Anyone could see he always was a stubborn one, that could work in his favour and against him at times. With such friends as you guys he stands the best possible chance.
-
WTG Jeffers...You keep it up bud <S>
-
We went and saw him last week.
He is still moving forward but the pace has seemed to slow down ... this may be typical in this type of rehab.
They say that he is walking better and longer but we never get to see him walk when we go there. He is always in his bed ... and the last 3 or 4 visits, he is glued to the TV. It appears, to us, that he is getting very comfortable with the status quo and we wonder if his staying at this rehab hospital is now hindering his drive to move forward.
It's like a catch 22 ... he can't go home (or leave) until he is mobile, but the amount of stimulation/interaction within the hospital is no where near what he needs to do ... they appear to do everything for him so he is not forced to do it on his own ... if he was home, maybe he would be forced to do more things to help himself ... I guess I am saying that I think he is getting lazy due to the environment ... I could be wrong.
Bodhi ... I delivered the diecast models ...
His eyes got huge and he said ... "OH MY GOD !!!" ... that's AWESOME !!!
He really did like them and we got them out of their boxes and put them in his room so that he could see them all the time.
-
Thanks for the update Slap, always good to hear he's gradually getting well.

-
just checking in see if there is anymore updates.
Hope jeff is doing well..
-
Thanks for the updates. Hope he keeps at it, and hope those who love him keep him going forward.
And again thanks for caring so much. Great to hear about the reactions to the die casts!
-
I dont know if its possible but getting him to watch something inspirational on TV might help.
I dont know Morpheus but there has to be something that he likes to do that can be watched which might inspire him to put some more effort into his rehab. I dont know if its a mountainbike movie, a skiing movie, surfing movie but there has to be something he liked to do that can be found in TV/DVD format.
I really do belive its important to find something motivating that he can go back to to find inspiration.

I'm left with a feeling of ambiguity... It´s nice to meet people from all over the world online, but when when we miss a friend and are thousands of miles away it´s not nice at all...
Morpheus we admire you and miss you!!!
Be well my friend.

any updates slappy???

UGH ... we went to see Jeff last week and I have been avoiding writing this post.
Jeff really isn't progressing at any discernible rate that we can see.
His girlfriend was there, and while I was visiting with Morph, Mars had a conversation with her.
The doctors say that they don't think that Jeff will progress any farther than he already has. This means that he will most likely be in some type of an "assisted living" complex for the rest of his life. His speech isn't really progressing, his walking isn't really progressing, and he still needs to wear a diaper.
With that type of news, Jeff's parents have decided to move forward with their "life plan" which they had been putting on hold since the accident. Jeff will be moving to Maine with his parents and it could be as soon as the March time frame.
Needless to say, we (Mars01, BadBoy58, and myself) are quite bummed at the news ... hence my delay in writing this post.
Sorry for the not-so good news.

I am still pulling for you Morph. :pray
Thank you SlapShot for the update Sir.

oh man. i've been away awhile and this is 1st i've heard of this. <S> Morph. God bless you bro.. :salute

just maybe the move to Maine and stuff, just might be what sparks something in Morph to have a change for the better........
As I originally posted, He has that agressiveness in him , no mater how deeply buried in him it is....I hope it resurfaces at some point...soon I hope...but as long as it does......

When we moved to this small town of Brackley we befreinded a neighbour whose niece was married that year to a young barber who had recently lost his job. He started to offer a hair cutting service whereby he would visit folks homes in the evenings and cut hair there.
We used him, and got to know "Pete" as a barber to cut my hair and that of my two sons. He was an aquaintence not a close freind...just some one we knew.
Later that year he was involved in a horrendous accident incurring both spinal and cranial damage which left him Partially paralized and massively mentally impaired.
The family went thru huge trauma over the coming years and it was clear after some time that he was never going to recover to the point where he would play any active role in the comminity. He was incapable of speach, incontinent, wheel chair bound and prone to violent moods.
To make things worse he had concieved a son shortly before the accident and he was incapable of understanding the relationship he bore to the little life that was introduced into his world. His mood swings meant that he was separated from Mother and child.
Every year we have a Bonfire/firework party in the town on November 5th (Guy Fawkes night its a Brit sort of thing) and quite often get some sort of local celebrity to start the display.
Last year two blokes walk over the the display one with an akward limp the other somewhat younger. My wife nudges me and points.. "Thats Pete" she says... I couldn't remember who Pete was and she reminds me.
Pete starts the fireworks to great applause and limps back whith a huge grin on his face..........
"......... and that's his son" says my wife..... pointing to the younger man with him as the two returned to the family waiting for them.
You see we moved to Brackley in 88. Petes accident was in 90 and last year his son would have been 18 or 19 (I dont know all the dates exactly).
I dont know Morpheus that well either...............he "shot" me down a few times.
I have no personal experience of great grief or even (truth be told ) of any great hardship or sacrifice. But I do believe that where there is love and family then there is hope and with time hope will bear fruit.

thank you for the post slappy, even if it wasn't what we all was hoping for. i can't imagine what morphy is going through or what his parents and girlfriend are going through while being there and helping him through this time. it was really hard to read this post and understand as to why you didn't really want to post it. im want to think that maybe the doctors are wrong, maybe they are giving up on him too soon. doctors have been known to be wrong on occasion right? i mean, with more time could there be a chance that something will spark him to remember things he might not remember right now and be the determined person that we all know morphy is? i dont have much faith in doctors, am i wrong for thinking this way? i dont think its fair that they give up so easily on him. its not fair at all!! :furious
slappy, you and your squadies are the greatest guys that someone can have as a friend, morphy is very lucky to have you guys in his life. thank you for everything.
i dont want to give up hope for morphy, i will continue to pray every day that somehow someway he will be back in the virtual skies with us.
never stop fighting morphy! :salute

Slap,
Thanks for keeping us all updated,I bet your post was 1 of the hardest things to do.
No one wants to be the barer of bad news and I for 1 would like to say how much I appreciate the fact that despite the news you still came forward to the community and told us. :salute
Hopefully a change in scenery will spark something in Morph and he'll find away to progress.
To Morph and his family I wish them all the luck and they will be in my thoughts.
Plz.keep us informed of any news Slap.

I am touched every time I read the outpouring for Morph in this community. Thank you all! :salute
A couple things that Jodi had mentioned, they just realized that Morph has double vision in his right eye and we are hoping that once corrected (glasses) he will have a better time of walking and that his balance will improve.
The other thing that is not so good, is that he has been on Adavan for some time, to keep him corrigible. Early-on, this summer, Jeff was pissed at something and he poped one of his care takers in the nose. You can still see some small blood spatter on the ceiling tiles in his room. Unfortunately on Adavan you really aren't motivated to do much let alone what is necessary to prevail in his condition, so that is not helping.
On a good note he looks good, he is starting to fatten up a bit so they have him on a low fat diet. He seemed more responsive than normal, but still garbled, but sometimes we really aren't sure if he is yessing us or really gets what we are saying. We are hoping his better responsiveness is because he is starting to get used to the Adavan.
I have to admit, it had been a while since we were able to get up there and see him. So this last time we were really hoping to find him in an improved state.
-
Not what we want to hear but it's his update we want. Not some pie in the sky.
We are all still pulling for him.
Slap and friends... thanks for keeping up with these updates. <S>
-
. . . im want to think that maybe the doctors are wrong, maybe they are giving up on him too soon. doctors have been known to be wrong on occasion right? i . . .
I couldn't agree more. In 2008 I spent 4 months in the hospital due to a number of problems. Since I had two broken legs, I was unable to get up to the bathroom and had a catheter in for like 3 1/2 months straight. When I asked to have it removed, I had two different urologists assure me that because it had been in so long, I would never be able to urinate on my own again, that the bladder muscles were shot. They said that I would have to use a straight cath 3-4 times a day to drain my bladder. When I relayed that to my main hospital doctor, he told me that he knew some "special training" that I could do, and he would have me peeing on my own in a week or two. He did, and it worked and before I left the hospital I was able to go on my own.
Moral of the story - remember that doctors "practice" medicine, and having the initials MD after your name does not mean that you are foolproof. I believe that with the love and faith of Jeff and his family, and the hopes and prayers of people here, he will be able improve much more than the doctors predict. I've seen it happen too many times to think otherwise.

Prayers sent.
We're all pullin for ya Morph :salute

Keep on fighting, Morph! Wishing all the best for the family as well.

Wow, sorry to hear the bad news about Morph, I was in a serious life altering accident about 12 years ago that left me in a wheelchair so I know how hard something like this can be. Just never give up hope that he can get better, miracles do happen.

I can't believe this happened ....
Why do bad things happen to good people ?

I can't believe this happened ....
Why do bad things happen to good people ? Was the person that hit him charged with anything?
No one hit him ... his head hit a tree after being thrown from his bike.

Oh man. I guess i just assummed .

Don't give up hope. My wife, my best friend & loving companion was in a coma for 2 months. The neurologist told the family she would never walk, never talk, be completely dependent for the remainder of her life. She is a walking & talking miracle (can't shut her up). She lost 3 fingers & 8 toes to frostbite, and had 3 chest tubes and a feeding tube for months, but is now nearly mentally whole, very sharp witted, and cracks me up with one liner zingers constantly. Prayers for Morpheus.

The reason that I ask is that Morph is supposedly in a very fine hospital but of all the times that we have visited him, we have seen him out of his room/bed once. They only allow 2 of us in the room at one time and he is constantly drugged. If he doesn't eat fast enough, they feed him and most times they just flat out feed him ... personally, I think that they have made him "lazy" ... our stance would be ... put that food in your mouth yourself or go hungry. He is still wearing a diaper because he will forget to ask to go to the bathroom ... I would have thought that they would take the same approach one would take while potty training a toddler ... ask every hour or more if he has to go to the bathroom or just get him up every hour and walk him to the bathroom and see if he will go.
This has frustrated the crap out of us. I am no brain specialist, but I would think that the more interaction along with changing venues would only stimulate him.

Slap I'm in no position to speak with any authority on this specific to care and treatment. What I can say is to trust your gut. My son (17) was diagnosed with autism and moderate retardation at 2 1/2 back in the early days of what's now recognized as a world wide epidemic. We were literally told to leave him with the doctor and have him institutionalized since he would never be a "functioning adult". Today he has a 3.86 grade average is an "assistant manager" with the basketball team and looking forward to going to community college next year. Nobody will advocate for Morph like his friends and family, if it "feels wrong" to you it probably is. The only real similarity here is the brain and I can tell you that the plasticity of the brain is amazing but it takes constant work and prompting to "reprogram". Matt (my son) worked with a neurologist 3 days a week for over 3 years doing nuero-feedback therapy (he was doing stuff like playing pacman with his mind (only "controller was his thoughts") 10 yrs before this stuff hit CNN. From what your describing he's being warehoused by an institution that feels the primary task is his comfort (and whats easy for them)...not his recovery.
The 1st thing I would do is prompt his parents to have a follow up meeting looking to specifically assess his current condition and to establish benchmarks, measurable goals and timelines. Example "Morph will feedhimself 27% of the time (up from ~10%) in 2 weeks...
Then set up an ongoing review and adjustment....as often as once a week in the beginning. If they won't do this then he's being "warehoused" not recovered. Interview facilities and check for a documented procedural process that actively sets benchmarks and looks to involve family and friends in the process of recovery...not exclude them from the business of warehousing.

^^^^^^^^^^^
Give the man a cigar. All to often people with brain injuries are just ignored if amazing recovery doesn't come in the first weeks or months. The truth is, it's a long road back from brain injury, and it takes focused intensive therapy. Think about it. When a child is born, and begins to mature, he gets the focus of adults most of his waking life. Constant attention is paid to "potty training" until the child gets out of diapers. Then there's "pre-school", where the child is constantly engaged by adults getting the learning process started, and preparing the child for ever more intense learning experiences. A person with a brain injury often "forgets" all they learned as a child, those basic skills.
Well, why in the world would any reasonable person think that all of those skills can be re-learned easily with the patient in a room by themselves with no real stimuli for all but 15-30 minutes of "therapy"? If an injured person can eat "some of the time", they almost surely possess the skills required, and only need to be taught and encouraged. The same thing applies to bathroom skills.
The problem is that most "rehabilitation facilities" do not have the staff or the desire to actually do the job. Many of them are poorly run "nursing homes" at best, and basically nothing more than a "dumping ground" (yeah, a sad thing to say) for people that no one wants to take care of anymore. They have a minimal staff, poorly trained, who are only interested in getting through the week and collecting a check. It's far easier for them to practically force feed a patient and change their diaper than it is to actually try to help that patient.

I agree with just about everything you said except this part, which I feel is being a bit unfair to the people working at the facility. yes, in some cases the person is just there to collect a check. But in a lot of other cases, the person wishes they could do more, but because of how the system has been completely twisted legally, they cannot. Not to mention how often these people are trying to make a living caring for someone, getting a thanks of families no longer coming to visit their bed ridden relatives, punched, pulled, prodded, pooped, and puked on while trying to help. Add to the fact that most of these places are insanely too low staffed because the place is not making enough, and that sometimes places like nursing homes are home to people who are severely mis-diagnosed, and you've got a lot of reasons for the care not to be all that great beyond the employees not caring. Yes, our heathcare system can use a lot of help, but it's not always as simple as other people not caring.
Plus, no one will ever care for someone more than the friends and family of the individual. I'm with Humble... if you're unsure, there's no shame in asking for other opinions or trying to find "another way".

Sorry, I'm just not buying it. We went through this with 5 different facilities with my father. In the vast majority of the cases, it is true. It got so bad that at one point, my wife, who works for the state health related boards, went to the ombudsman and had one of the facilities shut down and fined hundreds of thousands of dollars. They damned near killed Dad outright, and the damage they did ruined any quality of life he had, and set him on a rapid downhill decline that eventually killed him. There were three facilities that she had to deal harshly with before it was over. Dad has been gone just over six years. And just last year, my wife had to do the same thing again, over my hunting buddy's mother, who was sedated to the point she nearly slipped into a coma, simply because she was a bit contrary, and troublesome. While I'd love to think that nursing homes and rehabilitation centers are staffed by mostly good people as a rule, direct experience, as well as my wife's experience at her job, tells me that is quite far from true. And it is a damned shame.

snappy,
i wonder if when morphy's parents take him back home with them that they could let him stay at home with them and screen the nurses and aides that come to help him, have all his PT there at their home so it is monitored. its just a thought. atleast they would know he would be safe and i know its got to be frustrating for them seeing their son go thru this, it might be better for them to do it this way and get him out of that rehab place all together.
i dont trust doctors much and i still think that morphy's docs are giving up on him too soon and aren't making sure he gets what needs to be done so he can recover faster.
let us know if u look into things more snappy, i would like to know how it goes and would still like to know how morphy is doin after the move home. not sure if there is a way for u to keep in touch with them but u have been a great friend and i trust they know this and will keep u informed on how he is doing. <<S>> snappy and all u guys that keep us up to date i know its hard whether its bad or good we all still care about him. thank you all again!

The average staff member is only going to do what they have to; the bare minimum. From the way it sounds he has been combative (which can further alienate the staff) and they are keeping him sedated because of it. The only way anything is going to improve is if the administration lights a fire under the routine staff to do go the extra step with documentation as proof.
To be blunt, the only way anything will change is if his family (preferably a Power of Attorney) complains to the administration. They do need to keep their complaints as a list of defined events and they also need to season them with future realistic goals. If no change happens after a month or two, they need to consider moving him to a facility that may be more successful or at least more attentive to his needs.
For goals, I'd push for a weekly list. For example;
---------------------
Week one: patient will feed himself lunch (I'm guessing he is most coherent at this time). If necessary, foods he can pick up with his hands (like sandwiches) will be provided. He will be allowed to take as long as he needs to finish his meal, provided he has the ability to finish.
Week two: He will continue to feed himself lunch, with a few meals consisting of articles he has to use silverware for (like pasta/shells). He will begin to dress his upper torso in the mornings with assistance.
-------------------
Granted, I don't know where he is at as far as his functioning. Regardless, make those goals reasonable and known to the family, the staff, and most of all to Morpheus.

:( Let's hope something will change, beyond doctors' ability of prediction....
Loop de Lupo, long time no pwn bro! <S>
I was saddened to hear of what happened to Morph (got an e-mail from another forum about it, recently)!
And while I'm not a "religious" person, my thoughts and prayers go out to Jeff, and to his family and friends (epsecially to them, as Jeff will need them around him, to help him recover).
<S> to SlapShot and others for the updates!

Please my friends, never underestimate the power of prayers. I don't want to get Skuzzinated for a religious post because that's not my intention. Just please keep Morph in your thoughts. Amazing things have happened.
Keep fighting Morph! It's a fight pure and simple. KEEP FIGHTING! We're all pulling for you!

2 months in ICU, then a few days in TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) step-down unit. Then 7-8 Months in Elks rehab hospital where she arrived still in a coma, learned how to speak, eat, and worked on fine motor skills. Then a few months of Out Patient therapy. Unfortunately every TBI patient is different. There are as many variables as there are neurons in the human brain.
Often, there is a sudden awakening and things begin to improve. Remember that when the brain is injured, there is a decrease in the chemicals that help with alertness, concentration, learning etc. If he is very young that works in his favor. Young brains are still building new "Wiring" anyway, so they are able to compensate. The more damage the more months to relearn everything, just like it did the first time he learned to "Potty", or eat independently. My wife, standing behind me reading, says she "Had to go through all this". It's tough! Hang in there. Prayers for him from Boise. :aok
P.S. After reading the remaining posts (Many were good) I agree that progress can often be very slow like baby steps, 2 steps today, 3 tomorrow, etc. & his mind HAS TO BE STIMULATED! He will only gain what he has to have because it's required of him. Hope that helps. :pray

This does happen and caregivers/nurses get caught in the middle between Gov't funding cutback & greedy companies not happy with the same 2% profit everyone else is living on, & some still expect to make the same money they did when the Medicare/Medicaid machine was in high gear. In recent years, the fed has stopped reimbursements for physical/occupational therapy after xxx amount of days, under specific circumstances because there was a lot of graft going on, billing 85y/o gramma that hasn't participated with the therapist for 6 months, but the bill keeps coming. Everyone suffers, including honest facilities & caregivers, because of the greed of a few, or sometimes several. The caregivers feel just as cheated as you did when this happened to you. IMO :salute

Attention to meds, meds, meds!
Just can't assess what's happening when people are on substantial doses of sedating meds. He may not be making progress BECAUSE of the ativan - which is a long acting relative of valium. Especially when coupled with meds used to prevent muscle spasms, help with sleep, help with pain, help with depression - the sedation effects can add up tremendously.
There is a time and a place for meds like Ativan, but all too often they get added to a med list and are left on board permanently. Some places will let med lists grow until even young healthy people are on 15-20 medications in extended care facilities. Specific advice for the family - if it hasnt been tried lately, would really be worth trial of tapered dose reduction. Can't know where is brain is really at when its being doped up.
And by the way - Ativan has a half life of 14 hours, which means it will take 2 - 3 days for any dose change to reach a new baseline blood level. (Rule of thumb is 4 half lives to reach steady state.) Taking it the other way, if a med is only being given on an as needed basis the levels can still be boosted enough to keep it always in the system, never completely clear, if a dose is given inside 2-3 half lives.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Another winner. Over medicating is one of the biggest problems brain injury patients face. Every effort should be made to continually reduce every medication until the absolute minimum dosage to prevent problems or discomfort (for the patient) is given. All to often, medication is given to prevent problems or discomfort for the staff or the doctors and not for the benefit or in the best interest of the patient. Brain injury patients can be very demanding, time consuming, and troublesome. Especially those who are strong and otherwise healthy.

A lot of truth here. My wife was heavily medicated for years from fear of starting seizures. She had one Grand Mal immediately after surgery so she spent nearly 10 years over medicated (IMO) from unfounded fears. She had trouble speaking in more than 2-3 word sentences. The medication was acting as a neuro-restraint inhibiting free flow of ideas and speech patterns. They had never challenged her meds, even though she was seizure free for 10 years. (Now seizure free for 16 years) This is why state facilities require patients psychotropic meds be challenged unless justified by strong documentation. When we slowly began weaning her off her meds, her speech took off in nearly normal patterns immediately. Her mind suddenly sharp and able to relay in speech everything she had been trying to say for 10 years. Over-medication is a REAL problem and takes a strong MD to see it and do something about it without undo fear. Some seizure disorders however, never subside. That is truly sad because the must live under the constant cloud of a medicated mind/body. I do not imply my wife's experiences are typical, but if we had not tried, where would she be? (IMO) :frown:
The a fore mentioned opinion is in no way a medical opinion related to any person other than my wife. No decisions should be made without the advice of a physician/practitioner.

Again, don't let yourself - or someone you love - get put on medical cruise control. There have been enormous changes in medications available in the last 10 years, and while not every change is a miraculous one there are many categories where there are new treatments with fewer side effects or with greater potency.
There IS risk with any change, risk that things could get worse. But as long as folks are willing to take that risk, it can be helpful to try tinkering - especially if the current treatment program has troublesome side effects. For example, when someone's been treated for depression and has been doing well for 3-6 months, I'll often suggest a trial of lower dose to see how things go. Doesn't always work - some problems are chronic, just don't get better - but you don't know till you try.

Had to share this. Morpheus, if there's a word that means as much to you, I'd get your family to chant it. :salute

Hope his health insurance holds out or his parents are very very very very rich. What did he do for a living? He's a young guy I'd guess, living parents, girlfriend. Perhaps he's covered by his parents health plan, until he's 21 or so. then what? There is a reason that the medical profession refers to motorcycles as donorcycles. TBI is a horrible injury, one that is very common to our American vets returning from war and senior citizens in old age. It could very well be that the apparent lack of progress is due to the exact reasons given by the doctors and nurses attending morpheus. That the damage to his brain is such that he will never progress byond this point.

Are you visiting him everyday , at different times of the day?
They only allow 2 of us in the room at one time and he is constantly drugged.
The limit is a standard hopsital policy at just about every hospital I know. In the case of TBI they may limit it to one person at a time. It's for the good of the patients, not just the one you are visiting
If he doesn't eat fast enough, they feed him and most times they just flat out feed him ... personally, I think that they have made him "lazy" ... our stance would be ... put that food in your mouth yourself or go hungry.
yea, that's the ticket, that will teach him a leason, are you nuts? The brain like other orgains needs engery , we supply it with energy by feeding the body with food. He may very well suffer a brain injury to an area of the brain that controls hunger, left alone he may never elect to eat on his onw, because he doesn't feel hungry
He is still wearing a diaper because he will forget to ask to go to the bathroom ... I would have thought that they would take the same approach one would take while potty training a toddler ... ask every hour or more if he has to go to the bathroom or just get him up every hour and walk him to the bathroom and see if he will go.
again it could well be that Morpheus has lost the ability to identify that urge, he doesn't know that he has to go. He feels nothing.
This has frustrated the crap out of us. I am no brain specialist, but I would think that the more interaction along with changing venues would only stimulate him.
It very well may, but because of his TBI it may also terrorize him as well. His brain no longer works the way it use to work. However you are 100% correct about one thing, you are not a brain specialist.
-
You assume a great deal, considering you've never seen Morpheus, before or after his accident, and do not know him.
-
You assume a great deal, considering you've never seen Morpheus, before or after his accident, and do not know him.
I wish him well and if I was god, I'd make it so it never happened to him. I do not know him as most in this thread do not know him. I do know something about TBI. I was an army combat medic and work as a volunteer in a VA Hospital as an EMT, PCA and Phelbotomist. I am a realest. I never assume. Had I met him before his accident, I'd have told him as I have every motorcycle rider I meet to get a car that motorcycles kill or worse. This is worse. The reality is that his insurance has limits, his parents resources have limits, That his best chance for meaningful recovery is the first 120 days. That every TBI is unique to the injured person and will impact each one differently. There is no magic pill. Once brain tissue dies, it's gone. Nothing will replace it. nothing. Not every area of the brain is capable of taking over all functions of injured areas.
I am not assuming that there are evil forces at work and that's way Morpheus has failed to make progress beyond a certain point. I am not assuming that his doctors are over medicating. I am not assuming that he spends 95% of his time in bed. I wonder how old Morpheus is? is he over 18? Now that he is awake is he making his own medical decissions? Very tricky legal issues concerning TBI. Unless he has named his parents medical proxy, they have no legal grounds to make decissions. Doctors are legally bound not to discuss his health issue with anyone other then him.

No I am not nuts and I take offense at your tone. I have sat there and watched him feed himself with no problems at all ... he is quite capable in that regards.
"again it could well be that Morpheus has lost the ability to identify that urge, he doesn't know that he has to go. He feels nothing."
Or it could be that he can identify the urge, but forgot what to do when he has the urge ... much like a child ... that was my point.

I going to say this one time ... take your condescending tone elsewhere.
We have known Jeff for over 5 years now and what we do, we do out of love for a "kid" (27 yrs old) that we think needed some external friendly stimulation outside of "family".
I had a feeling that posting my personal feelings might go in this direction ... it won't happen again.

We have known Jeff for over 5 years now and what we do, we do out of love for a "kid" (27 yrs old) that we think needed some external friendly stimulation outside of "family".
I had a feeling that posting my personal feelings might go in this direction ... it won't happen again.
I took offense at your "... our stance would be ... put that food in your mouth yourself or go hungry" tough love approach. I also think that the trained professionals treating him have a better idea on the correct approach needed and understand the extent of his TBI.
Your friend could also be losing ground because of something called CVA, Cerebrovascular accident. This condition often follows TBI and is the cause of additional function lose. The brain is more prone to CVA following a major TBI and can occur at any time and often occurs many times.
As I stated before you have no idea as to the extent of his injury and unless prior to the accident he gave his parents his medical proxy neither do they. All the medical professionals are bound by law not to discuss his medical conditional with anyone other then him. They know what they are treating him for you don’t.
I just think that all the second guessing that I see going on in this thread about treatments for something that no one except the patient and medical professionals knows anything about is counter productive.
I feel bad for the guy and I hope he gets as well as he can. But your approach to his feeding himself is just nuts.

....and for all of your big words, all of your information and your lousy attitude you could very well be spouting BS !
Let these people have their hopes and dreams and their positive attitudes even IF they might be mis-placed. It makes them feel better and it doesn't hurt anyone.

he's an EMT and a Combat medic aka not a doctor.

slappy,
dont let some idiot that THINKS he knows anything about what is goin on in this thread hold u back from anything in here. you and ur squadies have done great things being there for morphy and thats all that matters!
traveler...or whatever the hell ur name is, you not welcome in this thread. this thread are for those that are standing by morphy and keep praying every single day that he will be able to walk, or talk or just do everything that he used to be able to do without any problems. we dont need idiots like u comin in here running ur mouth and taking a bad tone toward the people that actually know this guy and especially the guys that have been there for him for the past year and keeping us all updated on him.
dont bother replying to this post if u have NOTHING good to say...just keep steppin...
-
that may be very well true but why give up hope? Miracles sometimes do happen.
ack-ack
Agreed AkAk, in this venue, there is no need to state the obvious. His family/friends are well educated in the "Worse case scenario". My wife's Trauma surgeon & neuro-surgeon both said very grave things about her potential while she was comatose. Thankfully, they were mistaken. Hope is a good thing. :D
-
Traveler look dude noone here is posting negative things about anyones posts but yours. this is a post to show the support and care this community has for Jeff. if you have nothing better to say or you have something against someone here so it VIA PMs not on this thread
-
Considering Jeff has a brain injury, and is not currently competent, I think the medical professionals are required to discuss his condition with his closest kin, since Jeff is not able to make decisions for himself. And if they are not, his parents can ask a judge for a durable power of attorney, and odds are they'll get it. At that point, any medical decisions will include them.
-
first of all this post started out really good, it was all about jeff and wishing him well, then it started to become posts full of virtual doctors
so im gonna say to u virtual doctors STFU and GTFO....
Morpheus is a cracking person, full of fight, ive played with him a few times in game, and spoken to him, he knows me as the sheep farmer from wales...(sheep shagger)
and im gonna tell you people straight, one day soon i hope he is going to be reading these posts, and he will see all the shyt you have posted, wow great boost to the mans confidence wouldnt you say.
we understand he has had a terrible accident and as a result he is in need of all our help, prayers, and support, we are missing one of our virtual pilots, and its up to us as his online squaddies and friends to bring him home..
so please if you can not say anything positive, comforting or supportive, then piss off and dont say anything at all.
-
THIS IS A THREAD ABOUT THOSE WHOM CARE FOR JEFF KEEP THE CRAP OUT OF IT :furious
"IF YOU HAVE NOTHING NICE TO SAY DONT SAY ANYTHING" :old:
I agree TB... I'm sorry for my earlier tangent. I only posted to defend against the negative comments on medical professionals made by another member in this thread. I apologize if that started a tangent. I only wish the best for Morph and hope that his recovery, no matter how fast or slow, is always a step forward day by day.

We made it up to see Morph this past Wednesday and I have to say it was a good visit. They got Jeff fitted for glasses. He was only able to see close up and that may very well be the reason he has been having a hard time doing anything. The more I thought about it, what we take for granted, being able to see the fork, food, bathroom etc. may be with his very limited vision he couldnt do the simple things. Only time will tell. He got the glasses this past Sunday so we shall see, fingers crossed.
Morph was in really good spirits and honesty this was the first time I saw a very small glimpse of the old Morph inside what is still a very disabled Morph. He still can not talk very well and his mobility is still very limited. But when we were talking with him he really seemed to understand what was going on, he was alert and responsive and joking. He didn't seem like he was in his usual daze or as lethargic as usual. He asked about the plane I'm building, which was a surprise to me. I started to show him some of the pictures I have on my phone and he really seemed like he understood what he was looking at and kept saying Wow, OMG, nice, wow. In the past visits I have occasionally talked about it with him and shown him some pictures, but he would kinda sit there dazed and not really responsive. I didn't think he really understood what I was showing him. But this time he seemed tuned in. We sat and watched that Bears guy that does the survival show and all of us, Morph included were cracking jokes making small fun of some of the extraordinary things we were seeing. And Morph really seemed like he was getting what we were saying, although he still had a hard time getting the words out.
So thank you all for your support and please keep praying for Morph, the three of us left there much more upbeat and much more hopeful for things to come than the last visit.
-
Thanks for the update. Prayers and hopes for his continued recuperation.

Thanks for the update Mars. Good to hear you saw some signs of the old Morph. Hopefully this bodes well for the future. Tell him we miss his cartoon 38 up and about :)

Baby steps. As with my wife, years after her initial injury she was still increasing her abilities month by month with slight progress every month. Harder for people to see when they are with him every day. You will undoubtedly be shocked at his progress when you go back in several months/years. WTG Morph :salute

I hope he's doing well :)
-
As far as I know there's been no updates. Mars was in contact with the family, but I'm not sure if he still has a chance to speak with them since they moved morph.
-
It has been close to 18 months since we last saw Jeff. Last we saw him, he was in a wheelchair. The last time we tried to visit him, they had moved him to a "lockdown" unit for what they called "boot camp". Due to his frustration, at that point in his rehab, Jeff had anger issues and would get violent at times ... at the drop of a hat. Boot camp was to be a period of 6 weeks with no visitors ... not even family ... that hopefully would address the anger issues ... well, it took a little longer than that.
It was during the boot camp period we lost touch with Jeff. We had heard that Jeff always had a hard time after a visitation. He didn't like the fact that people were leaving and he wasn't. So between him going to a lock down unit (his parents never told us he was going to this unit) and thinking that our visits were causing some of his anger issues, and not hearing anything from his parents and thinking that they may might not want us around, we thought that he must have gone thru boot camp, was released, and moved to Maine where his parents had said that they were going to move once they sold their gun store.
When we were visiting Jeff ... Mars01, BadBoy58, and myself would go out for buffalo wings after our visit. Well, we continued getting together around once a month and would going out for wings anyways.
Mars01 got married this summer and we hadn't gone out in quite awhile, so I texted both of them last Friday telling them that we needed a "wing fix" and we agreed to meet this Wednesday. On Sunday, I get a text from Mars01 saying that he just got a call from Jeff's mom and Jeff has been asking for us and she was wondering if we would like to see him.
Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeellllllllll yeah we would.
His mom made a phone call, got our names on the visitor list (he is still in that lock down unit) and told the rehab place that we would be there Wednesday night.
We get into his unit and the aid brings us to an activities room with a large table and some chairs. She asks us to take a seat and she will bring Jeff into us. Well, the 3 of us damn near crapped out pants to see Jeff come WALKING in on this own power and steady as can be and with a HUGE smile on his face. His speech is very low in volume and hard to understand at times, but we sat there and talked, broke each others balls, and laughed for over an hour before they told us we had to go.
Part of our conversation was focused on Aces High and some of the people he had lots of fun with ... all the Blue Knights, XtremeJ, Betty, and a handful of others. I told him about all the new planes and vehicles and he was really excited. The reason that he was excited is, according to his mom, Jeff has been doing so well, he could be released soon and Jeff is looking forward to getting behind the stick again.
His did ask if anyone had claimed "Morpheus" and we said no way ... it's still waiting for you. I told him that I didn't think that Skuzzy would let that handle go so easily ... I hope I am not lying :D
When Jeff does get released, his mom said that he will be looking to move into a "group" home and we can only hope that it will be nearby ... I asked him if he was going to move to Maine where his parents are at ... He looked at me with this quizzical look and said ... Are you F(*&(*& kidding me ? He wants to stay in Connecticut.
We are now going to see if we can get our names on the list of people who can take him out for an "excursion". If it happens, we will be taking him out for some wings which he loved to eat before all this crap happened. Not sure when the last time he had a decent buffalo wing, but hopefully he will be licking his fingers soon.
-
Great news!! :aok Thanks for update.!

Already did Lev ... we talked about all the Blue Knights and some of the crazy stuff we did ... had tears in our eyes from laughing so hard and the best part was that it was him that remembered some of the crazy antics that we had forgot about. His long term memory is much better than his short term memory. He doesn't remember any of the problems that he got himself into prior to getting sent to the current unit he is in. He knows he was there, but doesn't remember a thing about it.
Also, I thought in all of this that he might lose that devilish ball bustin' attitude ... nope ... it's still there and it was great to see last night.
-
Excellent, EXCELLENT news.
I was just thinking about him last week, and wondering what the status was.
Thanks for the update.

Brought tears to my eyes!

I guess I missed flying with Morph becuase I started just 2 years ago. Sounds like a great guy, hope to fly wiht him soon. How's his hardware situation? Does he have what he needs to play? I have some extra equipment and a little money to spare, let me know what he needs and if I can I will give it to him and ship it no charge. My guess I'm not the only one willing to step up for this. Let's make sure he "can" play when he is ready to gents <S>.
Come back to us Morph, you got old friends waiting and new guys wanting to meet ya!

No problem, just give me some ideas. At this point all I can think of is a 38 with a big set of nuts hangin off the bottom! I flew with Morph when he was "Jeffer" and flew with the Mafia for awhile. Can't wait to see him back!

How about a smoking, damaged plane on approach with a bunch of people waiting/waving/encouraging down around the runway?
Or a banged, bandaged up warrior, holding a "fit to fly" certificate, climbing into his bird for yet another sortie (also with a group encouraging)
Something along those lines, perhaps?
-
Great news, glad to hear he is continuing to make strides.
-
Last time me and Morph were winging it was the 2 of us on Knights defending one of the countrys from trying to take an Airfield...... we both upped in Hurri C's and knocked down the 14 to 18+ coming in to take the field......
we would get knocked down every now and then, but the 2 of us held off the on slaught until they finally gave up the fight.......
I think Morph had his accident shortly after that no more than a handful of months anyways......
one of those memories that one doesn't forget out of all the 100's of thousands of sorties over the years......
I will volunteer to pitch in my help as well, if Morph needs help with a PC Gaming Rig...... just let me know Slap! ( or us know ! )
I am positive I can pull something together that is worthy of playing this game near top graphics ability.......

Let him know I hope he gets better soon, completely blew me away reading this post. Flew with him in the Mafia, WOT and BKs.. Thanks for being there for him Slappy and Mars, that post is just awesome to hear!

You fail!
Had you read.the entire post you would have seen that a well know player had an accident that almost killed him. He suffered head injuries that made recovery very tough. The latest news is that he is out of his wheel chair and has learned.to walk again. His recovery has been a long and slow one, not to mention something of a miracle!
Maybe you should to read before you open your big mouth.

I almost cried :salute

Well ... Mars and I finally got a change to visit Jeff last night. Something came up and BadBoy58 couldn't make it.
Finally, after 3 years (this April), Jeff will be released next Thursday. He will be moving to a "Group" home in Manchester, Ct.
He is so looking forward to getting into his own place and is frothing at the mouth to get back in Aces High. We assured him that his handle "Morpheus" has been saved and protected by Skuzzy ... he could not believe it and was ecstatic that Aces High (Skuzzy) would do that for him.
He says that he will have internet access at the new place and his Mom is going to be getting his computer and "gear" out of storage. We will be taking a trip to the new place, hopefully before the end of June, and we will check out his computer and gear and will determine if he needs upgrading.
We don't know how he will be paying for his internet access and his AH sub but if he falls short or needs some new hardware, we may be asking for some assistance.
Stay tuned ...
-
Just yell. I would be more then happy to help.

Great to hear!

I would also be more than happy to donate a month or two subscription to AH. Feel free to put me on the list.

Put me down for $400.00 worth of whatever is needed, parts, Internet, or AH. If its parts, PM me an address with his name and I will order them in direct. Just spec the exact parts so I don't mess it up please.

Will Morpheus regain all of his dexterity? Excuse me of this has already been answered, I could not read all of this thread.

Awesome!!! It brings tears to my eyes knowing Jeff is doing well enough to be thinking/itching to come back! Best news in a long time! Thanks guys for staying in touch with him and keeping us posted :aok

-
Slap let me know how I can help. Great news!
-
Thanks for all the feedback and offers. Mars and I will know more a little more down the road after we actually check out his new place and see what he has and does not have.
@nrshida ... his dexterity is no where near what it was before the accident but a whole lot better than it was 3 years ago. He strongly favors his right (stick) hand and has always had some trouble with his left hand. We told him that would have to change if he wants to get good throttle control.
We hoping that the game will not only be fun for him again, but also therapeutic ... sharpening his eye hand coordination ... critical quick thinking paths ... etc. We just hope that once he gets going, he won't get frustrated and abandon it ... it is going to take a whole lot of work to scrape off all the rust and get the "machine" in working order again.

SlapShot,
you are the closest to Morph, about the week he gets moved - and gets some time to settle in, if you could setup a paypal account for him it would be appreciated, we could surprise him with the entire amount.
Kind of a "welcome back to AH misses ya" Pretty sure everyone can scrounge up some change, perhaps we can get enough to buy a new PC or if not a pretty nice stick setup=)

Great news, truly great news. Welcome back my friend. Tell Corky to give you the keys to my hangar, there's plenty of P-38 Scrap Iron in there, help yourself. Hope to see you up when I return to the game later this year.

Just to add Morph, I think you'll have enough wingmen when you get back in the air, that no one will be able to shoot at you while you get the rust off :)

Yup ... We got a very bare bone box up and running for him so he could get on to the internet and start cruising the BBS. We have another box of his that we are assessing hardware-wise to see what he is going to need to update to in order to run AH.
We got the parts list yet?

<<S>> Morpheus! Welcome back to the AH lifestyle. I'd be glad to help out a little bit if I can.
Some nostalgia for you; if you recall any of your wonderful films you made, and don't have them I have several saved in the original format they were offered for download. If we can find a host I will gladly upload them. The entire folder is 768MB, but I know several aren't your work.
I hope you do well sir, and my prayers and best wishes as always to you and your family.
