Title: "No Active Speakers Were Found. Sounds Are Disabled."
Post by: Vraciu on October 18, 2023, 08:22:33 PM
Just did an update with Windows 10 Pro.   Speakers are working on everything else but when I launch AH3 I now get the following error on startup:

"No Active Speakers Were Found.  Sounds Are Disabled."

Help.  Thank you.

Yes, sir.

The only thing that changed was an update.

Sounds work everywhere but AH3.    :headscratch:

Its a feature.

Are you using on board sound or do you have a separate sound card installed. You may need to update drivers. Even your motherboard sound may need updating.

I have the same bug almost every time logging to MA. Not in other arenas, nor offline. Have to go via preferences > game sounds and change just something in speaker settings and relog. Does not matter what I change with speakers, it always works.

Help.  Thank you.

In case you haven't figured it out, 2 possibilities: in-game, Options/Preferences/Game Sounds/ 4 options, select your device(s) as appropriate.

Second possibility, On the Taskbar, find the speaker icon near the date&time, airplane mode, etc and use the drop-down menu to select your device. Chances are that an old device or inactive one like a TV you no longer have installed/working is selected here when the game is running

Edit:
I forgot to mention the other way to do setup sound devices in Windows settings/Devices/Bluetooth & other devices.

Well, I deleted the Security Update that happened right before the error occurred.  I got the same message but the speakers started working in the game.  :headscratch:

Left the PC off overnight,  now it is ops normal again.   Let me see if the error comes back and I'll post again if it does.

Thanks all for the feedback.

Okay, so here is the issue.  I guess I was wrong with the above.

The speakers ONLY work in OFFLINE MODE.   The error is back when I launch the game.   Speakers work in OFFLINE MODE but do not work when I try to go into the MA.

Onboard sound.

Why would I need to update the drivers when this thing has been working perfectly for two years?

The Windows Update seems to be the culprit.

I run Win 10 Pro and same problem. Next time you log in MA, try the system I described in my previous message. I'm just changing between Win configuration, Dolby surround and stereo. Works every time. I use 43' HDTV as a screen and its speakers.

You have to change every time you login?  Are you doing this in the game?

Log in and go to main arena. Then take clipboard and choose preferences and from there go to game sounds. Then just change something in speaker settings (or was it configurations, don't remember as writing this w/ laptop 400 miles from my game pc).

Sometimes voice comes immediately back after closing clipboard but most of the time I have to log out and then back in. With same name and logging as I have only one. Sometimes have to close the game between loggings.

The windows update changes things in the software. Your drivers might now have a glitch and are not compatible anymore with the new windows software.

Update the drivers for the sound. If that doesnt work Id clear the sound card from window and reinstall it with the newest drivers..

Okay so I went through both windows and AH3 and set everything to STEREO SPEAKERS / HIGH DEFINITION AUDIO DEVICE.   Now it is working but that may change...

If speakers disappear again, just change Stereo Speakers to Dolby Surround and next time just back. I normally shuttle between them when bug hits.

With me this happens only in AH, not in any other sim/game I have in my mill.

That's similar to what I have to do when I want to plug speakers to my front jack - I usually use just phones but sometimes I'd like to get a backing track audible through my guitar amp.

I get this too with Win 10.

Thanks for the thread, I’ll have to try these suggestions.

So far only thing that works is closing AH after seeing this error snd re-trying shortcut launch. 3-4 attempts and it goes away.

This is exactly what is happening to me now.  Over two years with this rig and it never occurred before last week.  What an absolute PITA.

I hope Hitech has some solution in the works.  There are a few of us with this issue now.

If your computer is plugged into the internet it is ALWAYS being changed. Sometimes those changes dont work well with other programs.

Well not sure why but a simple restart and reseating my usb headset fixed it. I use the Jabre 75

I've been kicked out from game few times lately. Comes a box telling connection to host has been lost. Internet connection has been working normally in other sims and apps.

What comes to sounds, almost every time have to fiddle with loudspeaker settings and relog to get sound.

Here are some screenshots of what I have to change to get the sound to work in the MA.   It only SOMETIMES fixes the issue and then only for a single login.

I tried a full reinstall of the game.  No dice.   Finally I did reinstalled updated drivers from the Motherboard OEM site.  So far so good.

If you don't know your board type and are using it for sound:

Hit the Windows + R keys on your keyboard to open Run. Type msinfo32 into the text box and click OK.

Select System Summary in the left panel. Information about your motherboard is listed next to the following three headings: BaseBoard Manufacturer. BaseBoard Product.

To me it sounds like a windows issue. The game gets its sound options FROM windows. If there is nothing available then windows isnt reporting the sound options.

Another thing, years ago I seem to remember Skuzzy saying sound issues can be attributed to connections issues. Sound is on a different setup than the rest of the game. Not sure how it is setup, but sound becomes secondary to the rest of the game when it comes to connection.

As for solutions...... sorry I have nothing. Has your connection changed recently, or when this issue has cropped up? Windows updates are the devil. I never let them automatically update. I wait, and research updates before I let them install. If there are too many reports of issues with an update, I just wont install it. I try not to fix things that are NOT broken.

Agree with Fugi. I windows updated and also updated my RTX 2060 driver the day I had the issue and it was after playing for three hours too. I am using Win11 so my best guess is it’s a recent windows update that was dropped to both win 10 and 11. Is that possible? I have not had the issue since the one time.

Do you have sound enabled with your video card drivers? Could be an issue there possibly

Good thoughts all.    Thank you.

So....   I have a Samsung monitor that receives sound but does not have speakers.  My other monitor is a VX238 with speakers.

My original setup had the standalone speakers connected directly to the motherboard speaker jack.   Worked great for years until about two weeks ago.

First thing I did was reinstall AH3.    Worked fine for the first game launch and entry into the MA.   Error came back on the second launch of the game.

Second step was to reinstall MB sound drivers.   Same result as above.

Lastly I tried plugging my speakers in through the Samsung monitor.   Same result as above.

I've disabled all the other sound options in various ways trying to isolate them so they aren't seen but the result is the same.

Short of reinstalling Windows or buying new speakers I'm out of ideas.

Maybe.  But even when I disable everything but onboard sound it still does the same thing.

I've read about replacing the dedicated audio drivers (usually Realtek) to built-in Windows HD Audio drivers to be a solution. Worth trying at least. Just go into the Device Manager and delete the audio device, remember to check the box for removing the drivers as well. Reboot and you should have the Windows drivers installed.

I have Windows drivers, version 10.0.19041.1, dated 06/12/2019. Voice via 43' HDTV. Tried standalone speakers connected directly to the motherboard speaker jack. Same results. What I find very weird is that problem exists only in MA, other arenas and offline work normally.

And now you have similar issues with the <Brand> drivers?

Start rolling back windows updates and I bet you will find the one that whacked it maybe.
That's a good piece of advice, given that the issues started in the near past. Instead of uninstalling updates one by one I'd rather do a rollback using System Restore if it's available. For some reason it seems to have been off by default at some time point. Anyhow, if there's restore points available, roll back preferably behind the date when you noticed the issue. And even if the available dates are younger, going back as far as you can will reduce the amount of updates to be uninstalled.

Actually I noticed this update or last Windows updated my realtek drivers for sound and LAN even though I have hardware driver updates switched off???? Silly windows.

You may want to check the installed windows updates to see if audio drivers were updated recently.

If so, then try installing the latest motherboard audio driver from motherboard or computer support website.

That's what I did.   The issue remains.  Installed the drivers (TWICE).   Everything works fine on the first game launch but not the second.

Have you tried the Windows fixes: "sfc /scannow", "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" and/or simply "updating" Windows to the existing version by downloading and running the installing assistant program?
Title: Re: "No Active Speakers Were Found. Sounds Are Disabled."
Post by: Vraciu on October 31, 2023, 10:17:42 AM
Haven't tried those.  I'm about to do a reinstall.

I am wondering if somehow these speakers are no longer being properly detected.  Want to try two more iterations of hardware selection before a reinstall which is a PITA.

Remember, the ONLY place the speakers don't work consistently is AH3.   Every other program works perfectly.   :headscratch:

Okay, so THIS is going to confuse the hell out of everyone...but............... .     The only way AH3 recognizes my main speakers EVERY TIME I launch now is if I set my system settings to my backup speakers (the side monitor, VX238) and select the game speakers to my Samsung LC34G55T monitor jack.

The problem with this becomes that Windows now plays everything through my side monitor which is no good, but AH3 will work out of my Samsung.

This is the most screwed up situation I've ever encountered.   I'm at a loss.

So, I decided to run my speakers through my VX238.  Worked fine on the first game launch and failed on the second.

I'm beginning to think it is the speaker system itself.

Other than that I'm at a loss.  COMPLETELY.

Pretty weird. Mine have worked just fine since my previous post. And I really did nothing except used some Finnish words with lots of sharp consonants. Ok, there may have been few other ones with them like verdomde kak which is Afrikaans.
