Move along girls... no hijacking here...
This is my thread to rant in...
Go start your own threads if you want to talk about prepublescent adolescent humor TV shows young women with big tata's and stupid beer jokes -arrrrrgh... rooo! Belch!
This thread is about Bush Senior's CIA and their invovlement with supplying the C-4 that blew up PANAM 103 and training Libyan terrorists.
If you want to stay here... keep the subject to germaine by discussing conservatives and how their secret addiction to supositories make them senselessly blather about liberal left wing conspiracies designed to take control of the conservative owned media.

So anyway, I prefer beer over wine. I know some guys prefer wine, but I dont really like wine at all. At the same time, you often find yourself in situations where you HAVE to drink wine. Like on an official dinner with clients and stuff like that. And I suppose its like coffee, I mean the first cup of coffee tasted like vomit, and so did cup nr 2 and 3..in fact it was only once you got to cup 14-15 that coffee started to taste good. So I was thinking, maybe wine is an aqquired taste...but how long must you endure that crap?
So my question to you wine drinkers is, how long does it take to "learn" how to appreciate wine?
-
Anybody like Red Bull and Cuervo? I tried it a few days ago, and just woke up.

It depend heavily of your background (read living in a wine producing country) and of both the quality and kind of wine you will start with.
For exemple I won't give a Petrus to a newbie it will be a waste for him and me.
To start appreciate wine I suggest starting with a bourgogne white wine like a Chablis , Sancerre or a Loire Valey wine like Quart de Chaume/Bonezeau/Layon (cheaper wine) next switch to light red wines like the one from the Loire , next Bourgogne and finally Bordeau.
But don't forget that it's YOUR taste not the one of anyone else !
If you don't like the Bordeau (like me) it's not that you have a bad taste it's just because it's not your taste.
Plus you don't drink wine to be drunk (well it can happen :)) so you need to mix it with a good meal (McDonald + wine == junk)
Some wine region you should start with (IMO of course ) : Anjou,Bourgogne,Chinon,Jurançon,Madiran,Saumur.
to answer to you initial question : it depend.
I would say some years if you choose quantity over quality to the instant you find a wine that fit you.

its ok to be a criminal if your on the "right" side. how anyone could adopt that whopper as part of a personal philosophy after thousands of years of history is beyond me.
bush jr a deserter , ok check (all i ever needed after confirmation from three sources)
reagan and bushes dad a tratorious felons coke dealers with more illeagle **** than there is time to go into here ( none involving sex but lots of coke and explosives), ok check
bush a religious kook, deserter, coke head and lies about what little he will talk about in his criminal behavior, ok check (dont forget bankrupted every busness he ever ran)
that they turn on a innocent man and steal 20 years of his life for convienience? not news to the party loyal.
yea talk about beer. thinking is hard let them do it for you.

So at the request of his government, this patriot sells explosives to Lybia. His government then sells him up the river.
But this isn't worthy of criticism or debate? What cowardess.
Perhaps you would preferring discussing how evil and bad it was for Clinton to get a blowjob.

ok, I'll bite

in 1977.... Who was president then? A Nobel prize winner was responsible for this policy?
["It was these and other firearms violations by Wilson, including a scheme to ship more than a thousand M16 rifles to Qadaffy, that had put the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (BATF) and Larry Barcella on Wilson's trail back in late 1977."
So the ATF thought to be illegal in 1977? Who was in charge then?
Now, about beer, I prefer a good Czech Pilsner....
-
^Wine sucks. except for that stuff that comes in the box, but I didnt drink that in college for the taste. Glühwein is good but mainly cause its warm and the outside world is freezing in the winter. AH spitfire pilots do prefer wine coolers Ive heard. Its beer or malt liquor for me, unfortuneatly the latter is missing in germany. Tequila,Slivowitz and Rum is the best. Want to know something strange all those peppermint schnapps in America that say made in germany? well they have none here. I saw a black helicopter last night, he said he was flying to nexus' house.

Actually I find white wine much easier to drink.
*Straffo, please hold your ears/eyes now so you dont hear/see this*
Especially if you mix white wine and Sprite, and add lots of ice, it tastes really good. But I mean that is hardly something you can do when your in a fancy restaurant with clients.
*Straffo, you may look/listen again now*
What I'm having trouble with is red wine. I simply cant stand it. What I would like to know is where to begin. Straffo, you suggested Anjou, Bourgogne, Chinon, etc. But I would like to know what grape we are talking? Rioja? Or something else? What would you suggest to someone who doesnt really like wine at all, but needs to learn? Give me a brand, a grape, a region, a house...anything...

It's extremly hard for me :)
Imagine in the Loire valley (were I lived before coming to Normandie) we have the following wines :
White : Quart de Chaumes,Coteaux du Layon,Bonnezeaux,Savennières
Red : Anjou,Saumur,Saumur-Champigny
and for each one there is up to hundred producers ! (except the Quart de Chaumes)
Now imagine that we have about 15 regions producing wine ... you are lost ?
I'm too :D
Just look :
I'll try to make a short list from my personnal reserve (as usual according to my taste ) and I'll start a new thread
-
Use this thread instead Straffo. We might as well bring some culture to these pro/anti-Bush-Bashers ;)
-
hehe :)
Btw DON'T ever drink a "Beaujolais nouveau" it's nothing except a marketing trick
-
heh, I dont even know what it is Straffo...
-
Good ,your taste bud are not perverted yet :)

I didnt read either article, did they mention that the majority of time this guy was sentenced to was for conspiring to committ murder? A FBI sting has him on tape soliciting the murder of the chief prosecutor and some of the witnesses.
-
Hard to go wrong with a Cote Du Rhone.
But I suspect Hortlund would prefer something sweet, like a Lambrusco.

The real question is who was the CIA Director at the time?
let me give you a hint...
Former President George Bush was Director of Central Intelligence and head of the Central Intelligence Agency from 30 January 1976 to 20 January 1977.
Conundrum makes a good wine. Rich oaky taste, full bodied.
Wilson is as dirty as they come (just like the Bush family)... he did solicit to murder the prosecuters... with out a doubt....
With a mountain of evidence to convict this guy...why did the government feel it necessary to put their fingers on the scale of justice?

"Conundrum makes a good wine. Rich oaky taste, full bodied."
You thinking of Caymus? Good wine but no need to spend so much.

No, it's Conundrum it's about $28 a bottle.
I buy it because the women I date like it.
I don't drink alcohol... and wine tastes like vinigar to me.

Prove that he's not a shadow president...
Funny how we don't hear from him much these days... ;)
He's part of that... heisman trophy conspiracy... and the Masons.
:rofl
Besides... what does all this have to do with wine?

I think we are talking of the same thing:

For cripes sake! I amazes me how much people wish to stay blind to the world around them!
If you are having a red make it a French, perferably Châteauneuf-du-Pape or Côtes de Rhône.
If white, then make it German from the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer regoin.

Speaking of blind....California/Washington state wines surpassed French/German quality along time ago. (And, we don't have any desire to use anti-freeze to sweeten them, waves to French!)
-
Define quality please :)
Quality perhaps but taste and variety are a work in progress ...
Not that make US wine bad but as I know there is far less choices in the US just because the producers I've tryed have some stéréotyped wines just like the Bordeau selected by Parker (may he rot in hell :D)
I prefer regionnal personality and sometime errors to standardisation (worst of all being "Beaujolais Nouveau")
Steve what is your prefered meal ?
if it's a swedish thing please give me a link to the recipe I'm pretty ignorant of scandinavian cooking (except the finnish one but you're not finnish :p)

ruined me from wine in 1984 when I was 15. I still can't even hardly smell any wine or champain without gagging. :(

so Regan had something to do with Libyan wine? I didn't know they even made a wine in libya. sonds like something made up from some whacko liberal french wine site.
I think Regan was responsiible for California wine but he claims he can't remember.

wife receives a monthly shipment from an Italian winery outside San Fran - she looks forward to it :)

You know, Ive been been meaning to learn more about wine. I like certain red's - but I dont know much about the history or the culture associated with wine.
Could anyone recommend any good books? Wine Snobbary for Dummies or something?
-
I've got relatives that own a vineyard in Sonoma Valley.
Peirano Estates Vineyards
I've only tried the red.....not bad....on the dry side.
-
I really don't know that much about wine. I'd like to learn, though. Maybe I'll take a class. I mostly drink California and Australian wines.
-
I'm not sure if its really wine but I like port wine.....for some reason it just tastes like alcohol to me who is normally a whiskey or vodka drinker. Other than that i'm not a big wine conosure

I'm guessing Boones Farm and Google for most of the "wine connoisseurs" on this thread, French ladies excepted.

Not necessarily so. I worked as an assistant manager of a liquor store with an extensive wine dept. for three years. Didn't know crap before that though.
However, if it makes you feel better, I did Google Caymus' web site.
:p

IIRC that is because it is "fortified". i. e.- extra alcohol is added, though I am unsure of the process.

I don't like wine that much, but I guess the stuff made where I live is pretty good. http://www.livermorewine.com/history.html

Dohhh :(
It's the age I started tasting wine ... (and champagne is not a wine IMO) try some sweetened (?) white wine like : sancerre ,Sauternes,Montbazillac, Cadillac or if you won loto : Eiswein/Yquem
It's time to start another try : for wine is supposed to be something shared with friends and a good meal nothing more fancy or complicated.

Dunno for Libya but Algeria was producing pretty strong and good wine before de-colonisation.

Not a bad choice IMO,Californian wine are good .
Did you try the Jolimont ?,I tried this week it's what I call a "gentle" wine perhaps a bit short but good enought.

Common answer for Horlund, Martlet and Saurdaukar : I discuted this with my wine club friends, we agreed that learning wine is a pretty long process a class won't fullfill .
So you would better start by looking-up for a wine club in your area if there is none go to a wine shop and ask for both the wine and the appropriate meal.
Our suggestion is the following : cooking ,wine and friendship are extremly linked together (as least for us :))
Choose a meal according to your taste (white/red meat ,poultry fish ...) then lookup for a recipe on GOD (http://www.google.com) or try a to find an online recipe repository .
Next look up the wine (or ask me I'll try to help) learn about this wine : how to serve , history , region etc ...
Invit some 4/6 friends and share your impressions about both the cooking and the wine and select the friend would will make the following degustation :) .
I'll try to post within the next week a complete menu with wines not to expensives and with not to hard to find ingredients :)

Look like your a good candidate for a "filet mignon" :)
-
Can you have cider or Roquefort ?
-
Cider -yes.
If Roquefort is a cheese of any kind, then very much no!
-
French wines, bah, can't even begin to compare to a Rioja (for red wine) or an Alvariño or a White from El Penedes.
Even Cava tastes better than Champagne.
C'est pas trop tard pour toi, Straffo, croisse les Pyrenées and vit "com cal" :D

Allright here we go ,
you will need :
1/2 liter cider
2 shallots
1 onion
300 g filet mignon de porc
olive oil
pepper
slatz
Cut in little bit onion and shallots
Pour some olive oil ( 1/2 soup spoon) in a "sauteuse" (a kind of stove but with a bit more edges)
Make gold (gild ?) the pork + shallot + onion (wait till the onion is translucent) with a medium heat.
Add salt + pepper + cider ,cover the stove then wait about 30 minutes (still at medium heat) and start preparing the side.
When the sauce as reduced , cut the filet in slice (1-2 cm thick) pour some Calvados and fire it (be prudent with the flame don't burn yourself.
If you don't have put cream instead, well ... even if you have Calvado put cream it's a recipe from cream-land (Normandy ;))
You can serve it with fresh pasta ,potaoes sauté or better IMO with a mix of sauté potatoes and sauté apple (in a 1/3 apple ,2/3 potatoes proportion).
Use salted butter for the sauté if you can it's better.
Serve with cider or a Coteau du Layon for exemple .
GOD (http://translate.google.com/translate_t) helped me translate this post :)
baaaaaaaaaaaaahhh Daniel
I wil see next year :)
