Title: Profanity warning bug?!
Post by: EsmeNhaMaire on October 31, 2003, 07:02:11 PM
I've just had the most surprising experience of my time in AH (no, I didn;t finally manage to land 3 kills in one sortie!)  I was typing a private message to Shiden in the CT, entirely polite and proper, regarding use of C47s, when a profanity warning popped up!

Considering my language is rather on the mild side compared to what one sees on a regular basis, I'm astonished, to say the least.

Anyone else had a profanity warning without obvious reason?

Sometimes its just a typo you don't catch.

I said something about an AFK pilot having gone for a studmuffin break, and had one pop up - studmuffin being an English slang word for a cigarette. The first one I ever got was in a private message to a buff pilot (I was his gunner) and said the S*** word. I didn't realise that private messages were also subject to scrutiny.

Yes, Esme.  I had one once while trying to help a newbie.  Like you, I was totally astonished and by the time I got over the shock, whatever it was that triggered the warning had scrolled off the top of the text buffer.  After posting here, it was suggested it might have been a typo - possibly missing the F out of SHIFT or something similar.

Not a bug. That can happen easily if you are using other language than English in the text buffer.
A little while ago some of us Finnish guys were chatting in CT. One mentioned that he got muted for 10 mins for writing Finnish word "lopussa" (meaning "at the end"). He was not 100% sure what caused the ban but we had pretty good hunch, as we all know English profanities so well (isn't it curious how you learn those words first in every language ?). So, having so inquisitive minds and being rather bored (and drunk?) we started to experiment how this AI sensorship works.

After some time and many bans I think found that the 'rules' are something  like this:

1. The system has obviously a database of the forbidden words.
2. The words are English only, so you *have* to have a good knowledge of English profanities to avoid them also when writing in other languages.;)
3. On the other hand, you can sling profanities in other languages to yours heart's content.:D
4. The system decides that the word is forbidden by looking four letter strings from the start of the possible word. Four letter is adequate even if the word is longer.
5. It doesn't check if the string is from the end of the possible profanity. So you can write something like "ussy".
6. Three letters are not enough, so you can write something like "pus".
7. It does not matter if this 4 letter string is a part of a longer string.
8. This sensoring works in every channel, public, country, squad and private.
9. The ban is in effect only in the arena, where you wrote the forbidden word. It does not effect other arenas.

The squad channel is not censored...at least not in the MA.  I imagine they censor private channels due to the inevitable message after you've shot down that one certain person you shouldn't have.

Ah. Thanks Flossy. Thanks everyone else, too. Hadn't thought about possibility of typos.  Especially glad to hear I probably don;t need to be too concerned from you.   It just rattled me at the end of what had already not been a good day, and I was having a touch of the moodies, too.   Didn;t need one more thing going awry...

Many thanks all. I know this might have seemed trivial to some, but it really did upset me a bit, due to unfortunate timing.   At least I'm forewarned if it ever happens again!

Did you know that in France, one of Toyota's sports cars, the MR2, had to be renamed because when MR2 is said quickly in French (M-R-deux) it sounds too much like Merde!

Heh, the Chevy Nova (American car) had to be renamed to be sold in Spanish-speaking countries.  "No va" means "no go."  :)

Yes. And a member of the RL Comhii Letzi, such as we are.  Which given RL circumstances is rather different to the Darkovan situation, but the spirit is there.

Last night I typed : "That F4U is really lagging badly" and got the "profanity alert" message - could not repeat this after so it may have been a typo - just dont see what in this sentence may be missed typed as profanity.

People can vox anything they want - and to me that is way worse than what any one types on screen.  People near the computer can hear the vox.

and range vox isn't squelchable right?

Zanth, use of such logic is largely frowned upon. Please cease at once. You have been warned.:rofl
