Bought the scooter August 1st. I will admit to a couple of incidents that raised the old heartbeat a tad though.
Once a ditzy blond in a new Dodge pickup tried to push me through an intersection. I approached the intersection a bit fast and the light turned yellow. As usual I made an effort, that would have been succesful, to slow down and stop before the light turned red. When I slowed I looked in my rear view mirrors to see what might be approaching and all I could see were two big headlights! Needless to say I nailed the throttle, ran the redlight and she was on my tail the whole way  !
The other "incident" involved me merging into traffic and running out of gas at a crucial moment. Fumbled with the petcock trying to remember which way to set it to use the auxiliary gas. Fortunately for me, the driver behind me saw my predicament and ran interference till my scooter coughed back to life.
It has been a grand adventure so far. I ride it primarily back and forth to work, mostly in heavy traffic, but often times I will take the long way home and ride where there's trees, ponds, and scenery :).
I find it interesting how the relaxed pace of the engine tends to make for a relaxed ride. 60 mph is fast enough and most of the backroads I travel have a 55 or 45 mph speed limit anyway. I noticed it has helped my situational awarness when driving the cage too.
Best stress releiver I ever bought...

between 6:30-7:00. There's a white Honda traveling in the fast lane between HWY287 and FM1382 every morning. Of course, "I" stay out of the way of those scooters that like to pull wheelies on the interstate.

glad to hear that you are enjoying yourself and are safe. Don't let the women vote you off that thing.

Well...if the women in my household had had a vote on it I wouldn't have bought it...;)

One thing every motorcyclist should get themselves is an organ donor card.

Mark,
I don't know what bike you have but I STRONGLY recomend the motorcycle safety foundation course. They often have motorcycles for those who don't have one yet so they can get training then get the bike. If you haven't had any training, it would be a wise investment in your future.

I had a scooter once, broke my handlebars the very first day. Found out that scooters are too slow to be safe on the roads (depends where you live). They look safe because they have small engines but once on the road, you need some power now and then to get out of harry situations.

"Scooter" is a term of endearment most Harley riders attach to their motorcycles. I don't ride what most people associate with the term.
Mav,
That is good advise, I plan on taking the advanced course as soon as I can get out of these 7 day workweeks. I ride a Harley Davidson Super Glide. I have a lot of experience, most of it 24 years ago, but I have heard the time spent in one of those classes was well worth it.
qts,
I got me one of those when they first became available. Not because I rode a scooter, but because my wife and I always felt it was a good thing to do.

meant what I said... the womenly men and women won't be satisfied that you have a donner card and have to wear a helmet or have a flashing strobe light pole ten feet high... they will notice yu are still having fun and just flat out ban the things.

I'm glad you cleared that up. I was thinking "How did he manage to get a Vespa up to 55mph?"

I told my wife I want to take a motorcycle riding course even though I have no plans to buy a motorcycle any time soon. I just want to take the course so I'll have a better understanding how they work and would be able to ride one if I ever had the opportunity to do so in a safe environment (like a closed track or private road - no way I'm going to do it on a city street). She gave me the same " " look she gave when I suggested taking flying lessons.

When I was a medic in early 80 we called them "Donor Cycles".
I rode one from age 16 to age 24 when I figured out I was not invincible. Then I got into flying and ran out of money.
WTG on staying alive Mark, keep it up old friend.

Yea, I'm not sure if Im doing another bike or not next season. Sold the one I had, it had a great book value and I knew I wouldnt have time to ride it all summer long with the hand surgeries.
Its that or get back into flying a lot more. Tough call. I do really like the Ducati 999 tho ;)

rode for decades without a helmet... I have crashed and been crashed many times but have never had a head injury..... I guess when you are as pretty as me you tend to protect your mug...
No...My kids are grown.. my grand daugthter loves me and I would love to see her grow up but... I have to live my life in a manner that pleases me.... otherwise... I'm no damn good to anybody.

You guys inspired me to take Big Toad's Honda out for a spin. He's got some 600cc Honda cafe racer thingy. Been years since I rode much.
Thing seems about as fast as the old Kaw Mach III I had last. But, I didn't really wring this one out today. Didn't want to have to 'splain why I was doing 70 in a 35 zone to some copper when I didnt have the cycle qual on the license.
Just got back from a thirty minute jaunt. It's a tonic, isn't it? I really enjoyed that.
I may have to go get the cycle qual. I made him a deal; he can use my trailer to go camping if I can ride his bike now and then.
Still smiling.

My uncle was the same way, Toad. Big Harley guy, couldnt understand the charm of the cafe bikes. Had him go take out the ZX-9 and watching him give it the gas was like watching that little Ewok hang on for dear life on the speeder bike back in one of the star wars movies.
He came back 45 mins later, big smile and all. All the rice burner jokes ended on that day. All he measures the world by now is those that ride, and those that want to ride :)

Mark, I wouldnt expect anything less than pure responsible riding from you, still I am glad some idiot hasnt tagged you.
Me, not a ding, and nothing but the rubber has touched the ground on my Yami. This thing is so much fun. I have had a one or two close calls with a cager.
