Title: Strange ATI driver issue
Post by: Saurdaukar on November 02, 2003, 03:21:56 PM
For those of you that remember - I was in the process of shopping fdor a new vid card.

I ended up with an ATI 9600Pro and I love it... but.

Playing certain games causes an interesting fault.  Thus far Ive had the problem playing Homeworld 2 and Call to Duty (pretty good so far).

The screen will go black, the game will continue to operate (sound, my inputs cause reactions, etc) and I get a message saying something to the effect of 'driver software failed to communicate with video card' or some such garbage.

Latest drivers installed - and I even tried one of those Omega drivers - both to no avail.

Any ideas to help me enjoy a game longer than 25 minutes at a time?

Could be a heat problem too, open the case and try playing with the one side off and see if the game still shuts down.
If it does its probably not heat.

Just a tough since you can play for some time and then locks up.

Got it - apparently the ATI cars dont like HW2 shadows.

The CoD problem is still ongoing.

Definiately not a heat issue, BTW - thanks for help all.

The COD bug is effecting all of us Raedon users. Just gotta wait for a driver update or patch. Don't bother trying every versoin of the CAT drivers.. users have spent the time and nothing has changed.  Meantime play RO so i can give you some Kar loving.

Hail All,

I found that selecting "optimal settings" for your system and not adjusting any video or sound choices has stopped the crashing for my system. The minute I change a video or sound setting the crashes come back. Hope they get a fix soon.

COD is a hoot :aok

but thats a bunch of garbage. were forced to play a game at low settings just to get it to work...  I'll wait for a fix so I don't spoil the game for myself.

A supposed fix for COD ATI users.

"The following setting config entries make CoD freeze when TruForm is DISABLED and they work fine when TruForm is set to APPLICATION PREFERENCE:
# set truform_tess to 4
# seta r_ext_texture_filter_anisotro pic "1"
# ati_fsaa_samples to 16
# seta r_skip_auto_config "1"

The following config entries let me play CoD no matter what my settings are (including Fast Writes and EXTRA texture/model settings):

# set truform_tess to 0
# seta r_ext_texture_filter_anisotro pic "1"
# ati_fsaa_samples to 16
# seta r_skip_auto_config "1"   "
