Title: KILL STEALER!
Post by: Mr Hanky on December 03, 2001, 02:33:00 PM
Apache's post on killshooter reminded me of something that happened in the MA the other day.

There were some of us defending a base from attack... alot of attackers.  So many that we weren't having much success getting over 5k or over a couple miles from the base.  But the attackers never took the ack down, so we had something of an umbrella to launch in.

I was at about 4k and had built up some speed when I noticed a friendly with a con about 500 yards behind him.  I called 6 as he dove a little and dragged the con towards me, though not directly under.  It was a nice aproach if you need help.

I dove down onto the persuing spit and pinged him.  The spit broke as I landed more pings in his wing and tail taking out an aileron and a horizontal stabilizer.  I was just recovering from the hard bank and leveling to for the finish work when the plane I had saved came HO on the spit removing his wing.  I was 300 yards behind the spit and almost k/s myself because of the pass.

I followed the spit down and put a few rounds in him for sure.  I knew what would happen next: "KILL STEALER!".

I think this is one of those things that either really bothers a person, or ya just dont give a crap. I'm on the side of don't give a crap.

I used to hate it when I would work for a shot on a superior foe and damage him to the point of unlandable, pull up knowing he's not going to make it and focus on other enemies around only to watch a fellow countryman Dive franticaly to blow-up the injured bird. Some would say "Well, you should have finished him off yourself." (he was clearly unflyable you dolt) I've since moved on to a higher plane of consciousness  :D

I've learned it all evens out one way or another. While that guy is diving for a dying bird, I'm keeping my alt or climbing for an advantage when the next enemy either comes along or desides to dive on that unsuspecting countrymen who's focused solely on the dying target. Who will, in the long run end up with more kills? pretty sure it'll be me, but thats not the reason, I don't like to waste alt/ammo on dying prey  :)

There are on occasion times when I've dove to take out a bogey on a countrymens 12oc, but only if that countrymen was loosing ground. I guess then you could blame me for killstealing, but the faster the bogies are cleared out, the better. I do take a moment and circle above to evaluate the situation below, and most of the time there is more than one countrymen involved so I look elsewhere.

If someone is that obsessed with the game to cry KILLSTEALER!! Then they need to take a moment and realize this isn't for keeps, and there is no Grand Prize for most kills   ;)

I generally let people know when they've dont a killsteal. Most people who do it are new, or don't know that the plane is a dead duck (I've done this before as well). I understand that a plane with no rudder can look like a flat spin, so usually understand someone going after it. Let them know nicely, and most people will stop it seems.

That sounds like FDB squad night... except one only one of them woulda augered cause the others would already be dead from killshooter.

I think I was that F4U-1D pilot cause I got 2 prox kills after I lost a wing and was going down, they were all diving in on me after a plane had got a realy nice bounce on me, I never did find out who that was. <S>

Kill stealing is a sure way to not get "check 6's" from me or their 6's cleared either...When it happens within our squad it's funny and not an issue at all.

Watching these typs IS entertaining at times though  :D

Tis an age old issue....I'm on the I don't care side. Every once in awhile you grumble a bit...specially when you make three careful passes on a 17...knock the tail off...and watch 1/2 dozen yoyo's chase em down from 20k.

The flip side is the number of times you hit 1 snap shot and ket a kill 5 min later after someone else went toe to toe with your kill. I think you just grin and deal with it.

I remember a long time ago about a year or so ago and i was relatavly to new to the MA, I had benn playing on and off for a while before that but not seriously untill that time. I had just rendered 2 plane unflyable in combat it was 2 on one aganst me i was so freaking happy, this had never haped to me before that, and a piolet who was a promenent figure in AH at the time came in and stole both my kills, man I was pissed,It still ticks me off, but it is not as big a thing any more in fact it ushaly only ticks me off if i am already having a bad day.

A few things I try and keep in mind:

  Always finish your kills.

In the heat of battle it is hard to tell if that plane is indead dead.

If it is still in the air and you have any doubt abot wheather or not it is truly dead kill it.

Newbies are called that for a reasion.

Ultimately it is just you up their, kinda like when you are in your car everybody else is an idiot.

No comment on kill stealing, just a comment on the nickname Mr Hanky.....

I vote for this handle as the best in the game.....I was playing the other night and I saw multiple "Hanky" kills displayed....I just smiled everytime time I saw it....

Images of the "Christmas Poo" shooting people down just keep cracking me up!  I wonder if there is a brown smear on the fuselages of his victims?

Generally if I see someone in a dogfight 1 v 1 and i've got alt i'll just hang around and see what happens.  If the enemy looks like winning i'll dive down and try to kill him.

Generally its probably best to keep your alt or make fake attack passes to force the con into making a mistake, letting the other guy kill him. Theres nothing worse then having a guy on you and one hanging up high above you.

Given the number of targets usually in the MA, theres really no reason to steal someones kill imo.

I should make it clear.  I was locked on to the back of the con about 300 yards back.  Someone HOd him after I'd done quite a bit of damage, then that someone called me a kill stealer for continuing after the plane.

Whenever I read about how kill stealing is rampant in the MA and everyone describes the dweebs that stole their kill... I think of this situation.

That's an excellent example of someone that does not know who actually got the kill. What has made everyone so defensive about this issue are the times you knock the stab off, or the entire tail off a plane, only to see friendlies dive in on the spiraling (and usually shooting) dead guy.

I call my squad mates 'theif' all the time, because they are  :D, but other countrymen I try to give leeway to. I would rather they come to help, and if I have to give up a kill on occasion, so be it.

"and there is no Grand Prize for most kills "

Perks.

And it is a REAL low thing to do, to see a con burning and spiraling down and see some moron come along and shoot it to do "more damage" than you did and get the kill (and perks).

Few nights ago some dickhead killstole the F4U4 I had smacked both wings off in a lucky snapshot. He tumbled down , clearly visible that he was dead from the d4.0 I was seeing him fall from.. and this spitdweeb comes along, dives after it and blasts it into a fireball...and gets the kill and I an assist. Times like those I wish there was no killshooter.

After playing IL-2..  AH kill stealing seems small thing.
But try to play IL-2 with 109F2 and its 15mm, just as you're ready to give final blow, the AI wingy comes and clears the table.. after all your hard work.. now that makes to curse, unlike 1 kill per minute AH style killing  ;)
