BestBuy and ATI have made a mistake and are selling 9600pros with free HL2 coupon in Radeon 9600SE boxes. This has been verified by over 200 people. Look on the top of the 9600SE box and look at the s/n # if it starts with either of the following #'s it is 100% a 9600pro. Not a bad deal for a $170 card, it even has the free HL2 coupon a $49.99 value.
S/N
180336XXXXXXXX
180339XXXXXXXX
http://apps.ati.com/102lookup/index.asp and type in the # on the back of the card
-
So the SE versions are like opposite the PRO? Meaning scaled back?
Cool!
-
Well the SE's are underclocked 9600Pros, it is a mistake on ATI's part by shipping pros in SE boxes only cards with either of the S/N #'s I posted have 9600pros inside them
-
uhhhh pfunk, you have a link for where you got this info from?

Thats where I got the info, I went out today and bought one. Guess what, its a 9600pro, identified by the sticker on the back of the card and by ATI's website :D
-
Is that card faster than a Geforce 4600?
-
with anti aliasing and AF yes.

So, wait... you can't tell what is inside the box before purchasing? So it's sort of a gamble right?
-
EDIT: NM I checked out benchmarks. Thx for the info.

Okay, I bought myself a radeon SE from BB. SN 180339XXXXX
P/N 102A0340700.
There were two more on the shelves here.
So, yeah, it's legit.
But how much of a deal are we talking here? BB had on closeout (and none on shelves) the 9600 PRO for $150, and the SE cost $130.
So if you don't get the 9600 PRO, the hrestocking fee is about the same as the price differential.
Still, the speed ratings have the 9600 Pro only slightly slower than the 9600XT, and this makes the $130 BB card the biggest bang/buck bargain out there right now.
oh yeah, and you get HL2

Octavius ROFL.:rofl i was LMAO for 5 mins at your avatar and location

Good to hear you got one. BTW Best Buy has no restocking fee on hardware. They also have a 30 day return policy.
-
or you can order one off the net for 80 bucks.
-
Pfunk, it's a $170 gamble... I'm tempted... I really am.
I have also informed a friend who is in the research/planning stage of building his next PC.
Frog, where? I checked newegg.com and pricewatch and found a crapload of different prices.

No gamble at all, just return the sucker... :)

hehe good point! not clear on best buy's return policy though... I dont want in-store credit at that place! Not the best place to purchase hardware.
-
BestBuy has NO restocking fee on items, as long as you return it within the 30day period you will get all your $$$$ back.

in every Fry's you can get is for this price
-
yeah, and as far as I can tell, the differences between the XT and the Pro are:
A) the XT does hyperz compression to 24:1, whereas the Pro does only 8:1, although this doesn't seem to have much of an effect on frame rates.
B) The XT has a factory clockspeed of 500 MhZ, and the Pro has one of 400. The Pro's chip isn't locked at 400, and easily overclocks to beyond 500mhz, using software that adds an extra window to the "monitor properties tab".

fock.
No dice here. Got a SE version tonight. Well, back to Best Buy tomorrow :)

Did you check the S/N # on top of the box? Did it correspond to either one I listed above?
-
Yes. Both the box and the card are wrong. I used ATI's product ID thing as well. I'll be sure to check the top of other boxes when I return this one.
