With the introduction of v1.10, I feel that this game is where it should've been during it's initial release.
With my new system, I can play it @1280x1024x32 with 4x AA and 16x AF, and my fps range between the 60's and my monitor's vertical refresh rate of 85.
There has been a lot of ex-Warbirds people signing up for WWIIOL recently. Myself and some other current AH'ers have joined up in a squad called No.66 Commando, which is primarily an infantry squad. This squad consists of a mixed group of WB and AH players, and we're having a ball so far.
I know there was a lot of bad blood between AH and WWIIOL on this forum, but if you have even the slightest interest in the progress of the game, I would say now it's finally safe to rejoin.
I had a great gaming night last night, flying AH for an hour, followed up by an hour ground pounding in WWIIOL.
Both accounts cost me a total of $26.98 each month. That's a pretty small price to pay for the amount of fun I'm having.
-
Its soo hard to get into the game for a Newbie. The interface is not intuitive. AH was easy for me.
-
What processor/vid card is in your new system?
-
Interested, but fearful of giving CC info to that company. I've heard too many horror stories.
If they did a 2 week free trial, no CC needed, that would get a ton of new players.
I'm taking an AH vacation right now, so I would most certainly try it...but...
-
I just signed up after not playing for over a year. Its better, but theres still alot of annoying bugs that have been there from the start.
the biggest problem IMO is the 32 limit, its extremely annoying and the cause of much frustration.
The addition of LMGs and smoke grenades have added alot to the infantry aspect, but its still lacking alot. In all its fun, especially if you're on top of a depot with a bren when an opel full of troops rolls up. The flight model is still a joke though.
Hey banana what time is your squad usually on?
-
Mickey- I have an Intel P2.4 OC'd to 3.0 ghz, 1 GB RAM and Radeon 9800 Pro.
Muckmaw- I've opened and closed my account with CRS four times now as the game has progressed over the last two years, and have never had any problems either re-joining or closing it again.
TPIguy- The guys in my squad told me the current limit is 64 in one area, not 32. I'm still learning how to play again, too, so I'm sure there are still bugs. All I'm saying is that, for me, it's worth the money now.
My squad has organized missions on Tues & Saturday nights starting at about 9:00 Eastern.
I'm not going to become the next Hardcase around here, but I thought it was ok to post one little thread expressing my enjoyment of the latest incarnation of the game.
-
I've been reading the wwiionline forums, apparently it tracks 64, but displays a max of 32 at any one time. Thats why in big battles people, tanks etc... keep popping in and out of view.
Whats your handle ingame? I'll try to get ahold of you. Maybe we can blow up some germans or french.

I keep one CC at $350 for online stuff.

WWIIOL does have 'quite often' those free trial times when you can play for certain period of time for free and without CC #, albeit not the kind of system like in AH.
Which leads me to remember my 2 weeks trial period in AH...
When I used my '2 weeks' to play AH, I got told by the admins about abusing the 2 weeks, who claimed I had made more than one accounts to play get benefit of the '2 week' trials... which I had not done.
Very nice huh?
(I played in open beta, but a few days before the end of it, I got bored of AH and returned only few months later - in open beta I did have three accounts, but that wasnt illegal, it was all free play and accounts obviously went to 0-bin after it)
-
The limit has always been 64 visible units, right from the start
Trouble with things popping in and out is that more often than not there are substantially more vehicles, troops and planes in any given battle than just 64.
-
Show me a pic with 64 units, because I now believe it is 32 or less.

The limit was never 64 visible at the start.
At its not 64 visible right now either. Nobody knows for sure, but the theory is its 32 visible, 32 non-visible, with sort of biasing. At the end of the day we've had a squad form up at a rear town (ie no enemy near) and only been able to see up to about 12 friendly vehicles. Others would disappear with 50-100 metres range.
-
fish i was in the beta (i was towd and called you foot alot)and as i remeber we got no 2 week period, when the beta ended we got asked for card, is how i remember it.no trail for beta memebers.
perhaps you made a new account to get the two week trial not knowing that they meant for you not to get one at all because you were in the beta.
just a thought.
-
Hey banana glad to see you are having fun in there. I will look for you. What is your ingame handle?
I find that except for when you are flying over a big battle you rarely experience the 64 limit. I mostly fly over the smaller battles where my squad in fighting and so I don't see the limit as much. I am not into big furball type like fights, I prefer one on one knife fights or blasting through a 4 man formation and taking out one.
Because the planes are limited if you want to hold on to your 109E or D520 you really have to fly defensively and forego an extra kill sometimes to make sure you can get back and land your mission points.
On the ground I like to use the P-2 tank mostly. It has thin armour and it a sitting duck for allied tanks but you can pick off inf and planes are you are immune to MG bullets. When an enemy tank appears if it is a Mattie you run but sometimes you can take out an A13.
Great game now in this version. AH and WW2OL are the only two I follow anymore. I think most AH players with a positive ratio would be in the top 10% of the pilots in WW2OL. Often the pilots in that game are trying to take out ground targets that are threatening an attack and do not really fly for the sake of air to air fights. Sometimes they will totally ignore an attacking enemy plane in order to kill a tank that is shutting down a depot for example.
Bigger squads will set up an air defense over an attack that is well coordinated and very good. It is great to post a mission and get on the radio and organize a group to try to wrest air superiority from them. The big picture more than makes up for some minor bugs or irritants.
-
"64" limit has got to go. Then it will be worth the money. Whether they're friendlies or enemies, people popping in and out almost completely ruins the experience for me.
-
I have a Saitek X-45 stick and throttle, and CH Pro rudder pedals. The last time I tried the game (free trial for old customers), it wouldn't see the X-45 as long as the pedals were plugged in. I absolutly could not get any tech support on this issue from the Rats. Also I couldn't post on their bbs, as I was a temporary member.
The time before that, I was a subscriber for 3 months. At that time I was running a MS PP stick, and the CH pedals. Had to unplug the pedals to make the stick work. Never could get any support from the Rats then either.
And don't try to tell me it's my PC. They were two different computers each time. And both PCs run all other flight sims with both controllers plugged in just fine.
If the Cornered Rats ever come up with anything remotely resembling customer service, I might give them a try, and thats a very big might.
I think they're just to busy trying to patch together fixes to keep their crap coding going to spend anytime actually assisting customers.
Screw em
P.S. I hope one of them actually reads this

i try WW2ol off line and i couldnt get my joystick to work. no help. no thanks

Created an account, DL'd software, tried to launch and I get this:
"error 10057"
If I ever get this up and running, in game handle is: "oktavius"

Did you post your problem here?
http://discussions.playnet.com/viewforum.php?f=8&sid=799f58e2c02aa82a12ee75d01784b884
If you can't post there make post here with details of the problem and I will copy and paste it there.
-
Ok did a search on error 10057
It means you are unable to reach the game server. It can be anything related to your connection. It could be a problem with your ISP, your router (if you have one), or even the game server being down.
If you look in your WWIIOL folder, there is a file called wwiiol_netcheck.bat It will test your connection to the authentication server and the game server and give you a detailed report.
I can't see a "solution. It seems to effect a few folks. On some it cleared up on its own.
Are you running a firewall?
-
neg no firewall. I'll check out that .bat though.
[edit]: Ok, ran it and here's a snipit of the log results:

The arena is up, so it isn't that. Are you trying to log on through the website, and it pulls up the lil launcher thingy when it gives you the 10057 error?
-
AKWeave.. I remember when you posted about your X45 & CH Pro Pedal setup problems, because I had exactly the same setup at the time.
I tried to email you with precise details on how to fix the problem. But of course you have disabled email and personal messaging in your preferences.
Makes it just a little hard to help you.
-
Coolest thing in WWIIOL is Right Here (http://www.kolumbus.fi/staga/wwiiol/freighter.jpg). Freighters can carry armour and troops to the islands which doesn't have spawnpoints for armour or troops (like British islands...).
That thing really rocks :aok
-
Why didn't you just reply to the thread with the information Kadesh? You had to have known he would check it for replies.

Don't get me wrong, I was excited about that game a year and a half before open beta. I still like the premise. But my experience with the product (in the three times I've tried it), and the providers has been poor to say the least. From what I've seen posted here, and on the ww2ol bbs, I'm hardly in the minority.
I still have the same set up, post em here, and maybe I'll give a try offline. After the last go around, I'm not in a big hurry to subject myself to that amount of frustration again.
-
Gotta put couple pics: Couple Lt.Cols with a Brig.Gen (http://www.kolumbus.fi/staga/wwiiol/2ltcol_1brg_grn.jpg) traveling in the destroyer's deck and Loading a destroyer earlier (http://www.kolumbus.fi/staga/wwiiol/allaboard.jpg).
Those freighters did gave a nice touch to the game; It'was pretty nasty surprise when Allies unloaded tanks from the freighter to the island which had only infantry, not vehicles or AT-guns at all... We still could keep it ours :rofl
-
Octavius didja ever get fixed up?
-
For those of you that can't play here is a look at the game from an infantry soldiers view. My squadmate made this little film. Not a lot is happening it is just a typical mission.
WW2OL Verision 1.10 (http://chip.no-frills.net/OneTenWonders2.WMV)
When you see the view zoom in that is binoculars which are part of a standard infantryman's kit once he gets a bit of rank.
Oh and Windhund as an air wing too if any are interested. We are quite good.

hmm matrix games screen is supposed to be there then the game should start loading.......

Oct:
Whats your setup? Software, modem/router, dsl/cable?
-
Cable modem, router not hooked up at the moment.
SiS 900-based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter.
Disabled Zone Alarm.
Windows XP.
I run the practice offline just fine.
-

So I'm guessing you're on a trial account, and ya can't post on their bbs. And the Rats ain't making it easy for you to try and get help, or won't respond to your request for tech assistance. This is an assumption of course, but I feel it's a safe bet since you're here discussing your problems running ww2ol. Lol, excellent PR for the Cornered Rats!
Do let us know if you ever get to play the game online.
Idle curiosity makes me wonder how many customers the Rats have lost because they won't take the time to help potential subscribers. Added together, it probably totals a healthy chunk of change.
-
Yes the customer service leaves much to be desired. But I have a feeling they are really short staffed.
The game works on my system fine. Always has. Lots of others in there as well. But some seem to have no luck.
Check your graphics drivers first. Then make sure you have 512 meg of memory. Microsoft joysticks seem to work fine and I have a few squad mates with Hotas Cougars as well. I have DSL an AMD processor and an ATI graphics card.
-
He can post on their bbs, thats why I gave a link to the widows help forum linked above.
-
I hadn't been to their boards for quite some time. This thread caused me to wander on over to see what's up. Look what I found! http://discussions.playnet.com/viewtopic.php?t=15820
Nice try Lexfire, but past experience tells me it will fall on deaf ears.
-
I've had the game running many times before during previous trial periods and "welcome back soldier" promotions. Hasnt happened with previous versions. But oh well, if it doesn't work, no big loss for me :)
-
I got stuck on the same Matrix Games window when I updated to version 1.10.1, too. Couldn't get by it, until I ctl-alt-deled my way into the task manager and discovered that zone alarm was up and waiting for me to answer the question of whether or not to allow the new executable for WWIIOL to connect. As soon as I answered yes, I was rockin' and rollin'.
But since you said you have Zone Alarm disabled.....
It sure sounds like ZA is still enabled, Oct. Especially since you can play offline just fine.
-
I had the same problem it just locked on the matrix screen what I did was to allow Zonealarm to give ww2ol and playnet.exe access to the internet and I could go online though in this version of 2ol I can't get any of my CH gear to work on inside the game :(
-
Only mentioned the problem I've been having in this thread alone and I get a WW2OL support guy to contact ME! Said there was a new full version download that was posted this morning. DL'd, reinstalled, and all is well.
Heh, spooky. Perhaps someone here filled them in with my name/problem? Perhaps the software alerted them that I was hanging on the "Matrix Games" splash screen?
Either way, I'm impressed. I've heard funky stories about the customer service over there. Score one for WW2OL in the support department.
-

Lol, no wonder it takes their tech support people so long to answer, they're too busy watching this bbs.:rofl
Glad you got your problems ironed out Oct.:aok
-
There must be a fix for the X-45 (although I dont know what it is. There are a few in the 8Th AF that use them. They posted setups on our UBB a while back.I'll look for em and post.

A number of guys in Windhund use that joystick as do the RAF 54 guys so I know that the problem is not with the joystick.
If anyone is having problems and wants to solve it with emails I can hook you up with people with that joystick who should be able to help.

As far as Support:
I had left many many emails to support over account problems and never once received a response:
As far as Flight:
Who the hell can fly at "3 FPS"
As far as 2 week free trials:
Us first week bandwagoners should be given a free year to make up for the bullcrap we put up with during the origonal release..
But I have to admit before they made a new user earn the right to not walk, there were some great fun to be had...
It may be to the point I should take another look at it!

Oct, if you're interested in joining no. 66 Commmando, just pop on over to AGW and start a thread stating your intention to join. Slicksix, the squad CO, will email you the squad info which will allow you to join the squad.

Got a question about that 14 day free trail with WW2 magazine. IF I sign up do I also need to buy a subscription to play or is the magazine just a promtion on the page, nothing more?
-
banana,
I am currently playing WWIIOnline but am without a squad, do you guys have a euro timezone element?
PS What is AGW?
-
Sunking, I think it's just the promotion. Good advertising for the Magazine and no need to subscribe.
I signed up, created a new account, and used "ww2mag" or something like that for the CD-key/promotional offer. More detailed instructions are at the site.

Hey Grayarea, didn't know you were playing. :)
We don't have a Euro-friendly element that I know of. In fact, most guys seem to play between 19:00-24:00 Eastern time.
AGW= alt.games.warbirds
AGW is the unofficial BBS for people who fly or have flown Warbirds. I haven't had a Warbirds account in over 3 years, but I hang out there daily just to keep in touch with everyone. That's how I discovered No.66 Commando.

Like you I have been in and out since launch.
1.10 seems to be the best version I have played yet, just a pity that it took so long to get LMGs.
Due to your timezone I am unlikely to bump into you :)
G/L anyway, and let me know if you find a squad with AH players in that playes euro friendly times :)
-
I picked it up again too. Busy with other stuff for the last few weeks, hopin for Tuesday night. Successfully got team speak working Friday night, still have a real problem finding the guys.
In a group it's gotta be a blast. Just have to find them.
I'll try to find you banana, if anything I'll be able to communicate !!
Still trying to get used to the funny helmuts the 66th wears...
I...I look like a GEEK..
