Title: Catch 22?
Post by: midnight Target on November 07, 2003, 11:13:14 AM
My friend's son is in the National Guard. He was recently called in for a physical prior to deployment in Iraq (or nearby in a supporting role). The Army found that he had a cracked molar and rejected him. They then said that since he hadn't actually been activated they weren't going to pay for the tooth repair either. So he has the choice to foot the dentist bill and go to Iraq or to stay home. Weird huh?

Does it hurt?

If so Motrin IB is fantastic for tooth pain. I works so good I never touched the Vicodin they prescribed me.  I know all to well...  Anyway it beats getting shot at if he's concerned about iraq... :)

If he has a cracked molar, wouldn't the NG rule that he can't serve and discharge him as disabled?

Not sure where this will go. Just heard the first part of the story today.

It is not something a person would be discharged over.  It's akin to breaking an arm or something.  You're just not fit for deployment at the time.  I wonder what their requirements are for remedying this situation.

And... it's not a catch 22 MT.  A catch 22 would be if they required him to have his tooth repaired, but couldn't release him to have the work done and couldn't do the work themselves because it happened when he wasn't AD.

dental care is weird in the military.  If your workin up for deployment it ranks right up there with getting your NBC training complied with.

As far as this situation, it strikes me as funny.  A cracked molor wouldnt stop him from being activated just from deploying.  If he was gonna be deployed he'd have to be activated first THEN they'd fix anything that's wrong with him and send him on his way.

At least that's what happed to me when I got the call for operation: "eduring freedom"

the checked me out....fixed me up....said happy hunting Marine....then get on the freakin boat!:lol
