Title: AHII support for 16x9 screens???
Post by: bigred on November 07, 2003, 02:18:17 PM
Hi HTC,

I just wanted to get out a request for AHII to have display options for those users with 16x9 monitors.

They are starting to get more common and the install-base will only grow over time.

For simulations, the extra screen real estate on the extreme left/right in effect acts as a "peripheral vision zone" and greatly improves your sense of immersion/relative motion.

Great idea, but wonder if eventually can support both 16x9 and 4x3 screens without black bars on either.

It's wonderful when the display fits the screen precisely, but not so good when the 16x9s get black bars on their sides or the 4x3s get black bars on their top and bottom.

Isn't the ah fov so wide that the image has to be squished into the monitors screen anyway?

The fov would probably have more distortion towards the extreme left and right edges, similar to the distortion we get in the 4 corners of our default views.

In any case, I hope HTC can give 16x9 screens a FOV set up for them, instead of a standard 4x3 view that is stretched to fit or with black bars on the sides.

I belive it works already. But you need to set the video res manuly in the video7.cfg file for AH1 or video8.cfg for AH2.

How would this be done without distortion or cropping?  Produce Aces High in 16x12 so it can do 16x9 by cropping top and bottom and 4x3 by cropping sides?

Thanks for the reply Hitech!

I did a quick check by editing the video8 file as you suggested an adding in a 16x9 res (1280x768 in my test).  The FOV did in fact change  an allow a slightly wider field of view compared to the standard 3x4 format.

I'll have to do some testing back home on the plasma screen and let you know how it turns out.

If the FOV turns out to scale correctly to a big 16x9 screen, that combined with the mouse looking should make for a TOTALLY IMMERSIVE experience.  I cant wait.

I've been playing ah1 at 16x9 for a while now. On a sony w900. The only problem that i can see in ah1 is that it doesn't increase FOV at all, it just crops off what you would see veritcally.

I havn't tried it in ah2, but if it increases fov, that would be great.

Careful you don't burn-in those plasmas with the things on the screen that do not move!
