A French woman has completed the first solo windsurfer crossing of the Pacific from Peru to Tahiti.
Raphaela Le Gouvello, 43, arrived in Papeete this week after travelling 7170 kilometres in 89 days and seven hours, her website reported. She has already completed solo crossings of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.
Her home for three months was a 7.8-metre board on which she ate and slept in special watertight compartments. She contacted her back-up crew in Paris twice a day to report her position.
Le Gouvello completed the first crossing of the Atlantic by a woman windsurfer in 2000, taking 58 days to sail from Senegal to Martinique. Two years later she crossed the Mediterranean from Marseilles to Tunis in 10 days.

water tight compartments, about 24' long? that's a sail boat.

So, actually, it was a mini yacht.

I'm thinking that the heavy underarm hair acted somewhat like a sail and enabled an additional knot or two.
-
she'd lose the speed advantage from underarm hair, from her leg hair. But the white flag on the back would also help a little

She carried freeze-dried food and desalinated the ocean water.
-
Score one for the French:aok
-
She has inspired me.
I am going to voyage to Florida from Canada. Much like the pioneers I will be equiped with nothing but a compass, some cloths and a 32' RV.
-
Y'know, regardless of the board, er boat, she's in, crossing the Pacific in something that small and alone is a neat accomplishment.
I wouldnt go for the prestige of holding a record as a windsurfer (because of the bitching over the fact that it's not even a board ;)), I'd do it because I can.
-
Yeah that's a boat! ... but quite a fun experience requiring some willspirit.
-
Maybe next year there will be a race!
I can see it now.
USA
Aussie
France
England
New Zealand
maybe even a Canadian board....
It would be cool.
I remember a few years ago a Cuban man windsurfed his way to Florida.
-
Crossing the ocean on a BOAT that size, alone.. Awesome.
Windsurfing? Not.
-
Hey Animal could build one of those thing and sail to freedom in the USA... :aok
-
I flew a hang glider across the country non stop.
Well, it had 3 engines and a pressurized cockpit.
-
good for her !
-
That is pretty cool. And it may be a record for the smallest sailboat to sail the pacific..but its not a sail board.
-
Did she ask for political asylum?
She is not a french woman.. but a "Freedom" woman.

I salute this woman for her courage and sailing skill. Well done.
-
Well now she's tested...she can now marry another froggy.

love the way you bozo's turn things around......
coming from you guys...it is to be expected.
you talk about them(French) with such humour...
Yet in my book....they actually helped YOU get your FREEDOM from the brits....
but oh my.....it wasn't done yesterday....bad bad me.
but the brits did help you yesterday....so hence the attention span.
funny you support the country that actaully wanted to TAKE IT AWAY FROM YOU.....and bash the one that actually helped you
american common sense:aok
and who decides HOW BIG a wind surf board is....
-
If you can mount a cannon on it, it aint a surfboard.
-
T'inquiéte Slo ,ça va pas les empecher de parler d'Euro-Trash dés que quelqu'un poste un truc qui ne leur plait pas ...
-
Ahhh the aptly named SLO rears his thick mellon followed quickly by the famous (see my sig) Straffo.
Just can't say anything about the french without the two stooges rushing to the scene...............
SLO you take on France American history is about 200 years out of date. Using the same logic I guess when a couple gets divorced you say "but they said they loved each other 15 years ago"
Face it the US is has realized how much of a scumbag most French politicians and the people in France who support them are.
-
wtf did you write Habu ?
In the original post you still fail to notice my post was a counter-troll to X2lee post ?
A contrario to some BBS baboon who posted the usual so smart joke about armpits there is at least one guy intelligent enought to notice the real point of the accomplishment :

lol...I'm sorry Straffo, couldn't resist.
I also her for what she did...particularly as it was the Pacific she crossed which is much bigger than the Atlantic.
Lots more sharks too.
-
I'm sorry too Curval ,I shouldn't had used the word "baboon" , I resisted the temptation to answer this post a long time.even being more and more pissed.
But seeing Habu bananaing again pissed me a lot.
Especially with is out of context sig.

It's okay man...I kinda deserved it.

Straffo my signature is a direct quote of one of your posts. If you do not like it you should not have said it.
It makes no difference if they are original or you copied them from someone else. You posted them. Not me.

What a bunch of whiners you guys are. Someone points out that in their opinion it's hardly a wind surfer, most people agree with them, and now we should support her because France helped us over 200 years ago?
Talk about your over inflated egos.

Did I bring it with each of my posts whatever the subject is ?
I've said it and you are spreading it out of context.

All they said was it's hardly a windsurfer. It's a sailboat. Then you got your panties in a bunch.

I disagree it's not a sailboat it's more a kind of cross-gender boat (yes I know it's not the word I should have used :))
She used a huge windsurf close to a boat but she was using her arm to handle the boom so ?
@Slo : laisse tomber la pression ,tu sais comme moi qu'ils forment le gros des clients de HTC et je vois mal HTC se facher avec ses client pour nous ...

Personally, I could care less. Call it whatever you'd like.
The point is, people were pointing out that it wasn't a windsurfer, and SLO was the one that started crying and name calling.
-
hmmm ... what about that :

So, crybaby should have crapped on Pooh, then. Instead, he attacked the USA. Pooh said something about France. Pooh is from Germany.
SLO just enjoys bashing the US so much, he failed to do his homework.

I won't criticize Slo when in anger I'm not very smart either (you already knew that :)) it's more a "shotgun" post than anything else :)

too funny.
That woman must have arms the size of tree trunks, the French army will employ her as their flag waver ;)
tho, amazing achievement.
-
:lol
Hey Ikon are you the same guy from WW2OL?
-
Habu,
I see you are going to tough it out from Canada to Florida. Be a man, and do it without using I-95. Did I hear ROADTRIP!! :D No it was a hijacking...
