Title: Pinnacle Studio 8 (Web Movies)
Post by: Creamo on November 13, 2003, 12:19:20 PM
I have had constant crashes with this program I got free with a Dazzle device, (light version) which if i save it enough I can live with. Just because I find it easy to use, and can make great movies with ease.

My problem is, for anyone that knows how to make DV captured videos, is how to make them so that they are as high quality as possible, but accessible for 56K modem users that would try to download them from my website.

I'm capturing from a Sony DCR-TRV350 direct DV on a SIIG USB2.0 FireWire card.

Any tips to making the settings optimized would be great. I don't know if I need to do some shat like codex or whatever to make them smaller, and if that would make browsers not be able to load them because they don't have some weird codx/divx, something or nother I just don't get.

Yup, as that made as much sense at it did to me.

Make sure you are running the latest version. If that does not help then try stepping back versions, strange but true some version work well with particular hardware some do not.

The Pinnacle site has a web forum, they may be able to help you.

On the compression side, the best compression is probably with an MPEG 4 codec, pinnacle however does not support (although you can make it use them) third party codecs.

My advise would be setup the movie the way you want it in studio then make the movie to an uncompressed avi file (which will be very big) and then use divx to encode the film to MPEG 4. This ensures maximum output quality from the MPEG 4 codec, also if you want to resize the movie, do the downsizing in the MPEG 4 pass.

Studio is a entry level product, and as such is not as stable as it could be, if you are serious then get Pinnacle edition, it is so much better.

Studio can be quite stable if you do your editing in a particular way;

Don't capture to MPEG 2, it is very poor quality compression because it is done in real time.
Setup the time line with the clips in order and trimmed to your liking.
Do not use auto save, it will screw up your project.
Save to different project files so if you have done somthing that messes it up you can revert. BTW undo doesn't work very well.
Apply transitions only after all clip editing is done.
Try not to alter transition length once they are on the timeline, this often screws up the edit and the only option is to revert to an earlier copy.
When you make the movie do it from the timeline view, don't ask me why but it often works better in timeline view.

I used pinnacle Studio 8 while I was in the Art Institute, It was the biggest piece of crap ever!

It always liked to crash while compiling my 2D Animation work, I nearly broke the computer I was on because it liked to crash so often!

Whenever I possibly could, I would work in After Effects or Premiere, But I had to use it for my 2D work. Boy did it suck!

Here are some tips from the Pinnacle Web board. I work for Pinnacle.

S8 is not the peace of crap some of these guys are saying it is, but it does have some issues. Just like all software it is not going to work for everyone. Thats not to say the software is not at fault n ocasion, but in many cases where the software gets blamed it is a very poorly maintained system that is the cause.

Now for the guys that had trouble with it, hey I am not saying your system is junk, or even that it is your system, just that you are not being fair calling the software junk cause it did not work for you.

If any of you want help with the software email me at Gtora2@hotmail.com.
