Title: Boxed cpu or regular?
Post by: Nilsen on November 13, 2003, 12:30:19 PM
Are the fans that amd deliver with their boxed 2500+ good enough and fairly silent? or should i get a regular cpu and add the grease and fan myself (im a newb, never done this before)

thx

Unless you plan to overclock the AMD fan will work fine, If you do overclock just watch your CPU temp if it gets as high as 50*C
you need more cooling power, copper heatsinks are the safest & cheapest way to go, if you want to go to 3Ghz or more you'll need water cooling.

the fans/hs that come with the cpu are tested at normal clocking and they will run fairly cool .

but for better performance and overclocking i always buy a good aftermarket fan/hs . thermaltake makes good fan/hs.

also look at the heat sink .. a fine finned hs is always better then the thicker ones (they disipate heat faster)
also check your hs for dust buildup and clean as needed

Thx for the tips.

I'm not gonna overclock so after reading your advice ill go for a boxed one. Looks like ill save a few $ and i wont have to worry about making any mistakes.

If i need more performance later on ill just buy a new cpu. By the time AH3 :D  is out a more powerfull socket A processor will prolly be available cheaper anyway :)

2500+ should be good enough for AH2.

another thing needed is a good case fan or two . a improperly cooled case will cause any cpu cooler to run hot .

Im not a fan of the side panel fans mostly because they blow in the wrong direction . the front fan should be sucking inward , and the rear blowing out ..  if you do run a side case fan set it up to blow inward  to it doesnt fight with the cpu cooler .(also if its sitting next to your monitor it will be drawing in heat from that which is Bad)

the top panel fans blowing outward work really good also .

my TR2 fan  runs at 45-50C  with the 2400+ cpu oced to 2.19
with one forward mounted case fan . It peaks at 52C when i work it hard.

43-48C when it was clocked at 2.0ghz

Im not gonna put alot of crap in this puter, just the basics:

Need:
Cpu amd 2500+ or 2600+ (bartons)
2x 256mb or 1x512 mb mem (pc3200)
Mobo (nForce2, firewire, sata, usb2 and audio)
Cabinet (miditower thats solid and cheap)

Have:
19" LCD
350w silent psu
Dvd-cdrw combo
Radeon 9600xt
80gb sata drive
Win 2000, can use XP license if i have to.

Maybe a floppy if i have to
Possibly a really good sound card someday

The retail box 2500+ fan is very quiet.  The heatsink is (typically) a very thin fin aluminum heatsink that works pretty well.  The only problem I've ever had with this heatsink is that dust can get between the fins if the system is ran in a dusty environment and cause the system to lockup from heat issues.  Obviously the solution is as simple as blowing the dust out of the heatsink.

The other advantage with the retail box CPU is the 3 year warranty instead of 30 or 90 days.

I just bought a 2500+ Barton Core in a box.  It came with a nice Copper Heatsink.
