Title: Marine
Post by: midnight Target on November 14, 2003, 11:39:50 AM
I will be visiting my Father-in-law in about a week. He was a dirt Marine in WW2, Pacific Theater. Made 3 landings including Guadalcanal, Bouganville and Guam, and loves talking about it. Anyone have questions they'd like me to ask?

Hey MT

I still have not got the chance to call him. I am a bit intimidated really, men like him are my heroes even to this day.

Ask him about the food. And what the living conditions where like.

Did he prefer the Tommy gun over the infantry rifle?

What is his opinion of Audie Murphy's book "To Hell And Back"?

What was his opinion of Marine air power during invasions?

Regarding invasions, which was better - a naval bombardment to soften up enemy defenses, or a sneak attack to use the element of surprise?

Did they ever coordinate ground attacks with the Army, or was it an all-Marine affair initially, then an all-Army affair after the beach-head was secured?

If you wouldn't mind, ask him what life was like when not on the line.  What pranks, horseplay does he remember?

Beer will definitely be there in abundance. I hear thats what they're weaned on up in the U.P. of Michigan. This "old guy" still swims regularly in Lake Superior and just recently gave up scuba diving. He's about 1/2 my size and could probably still kick my ass.

We are planning to drive there. Hope the weather cooperates.

Target, tell him thanks for me :).  Find out what unit he was with.  My Uncle was a member of the 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Division.  They didn't hit the beach on Guadalcanal, but landed later in September.  They also fought or hit the beach in Eastern New Guinea, New Britain, Peleliu and Okinawa.  He was wounded twice, and contracted malaria.  He doesn't talk much about it, but did say Peleliu was some of the toughest fighting he saw.  Lost his best friend that he signed up with on the 'buddy system'.  War sure makes lots of heros out of ordinary people, doesn't it?

Cya Up!

I do know that he was in New Zealand for a time recovering from wounds. He even mentioned a girlfriend in NZ... the dog.

Ask him how he lives with the embarrassment of having such a politically defunct son-in-law.

MT, id like to know if they really feared snipers or if they just ignored the thought of them, or perhaps it was not that much of an issue there..

Also i would like to know if they did alot of parachute drops on the islands in those days.

Sometime in january im gonna take the navy parachute badge before i resign for good..its gonna be "cool" to have that badge on my shoulder for the last few says of my service time.
