Does anyone have medical knowledge on viruses and perhaps can help me?..Me wife got sick a couple of days ago and yesterday broke out in hives and had severely aching joints. She drove herself to a medical clinic where she was examined by two doctors...They seemed to come to the conclusion that she had 2 viruses affecting her by examining the two different types of bumps...They said that it was at the end of the sickness as the bumps are a good sign that the body is rejecting the bugs.
Well today I had to drop her off at the hospital(they wouldn't let me in with our 11 month old baby)..She is unable to walk and is in severe pain..a nurse went and got her a wheelchair to take her in.
Well it's been 7 hours and countless exams and none of the doctors know what the hell she is battling. The pain is getting worse though they gave her painkillers recently.
I'm just waiting at home very uneasy and thought maybe someone here has seen this before.
Thnx in advance.
-
Not sure at all...But will ask wife when i talk to her in a bit...She was in medical field..maybe she would have a guess....Best wishes to you and her...and prayers:)

Off the top of my head, but did she get checked for Lyme Disease?
I'll think about it tonight...
I hope she recovers quickly, let us know how she is doing.
-
It sounds as if she is having a reaction to something.. Is she allergic?

I doubt it is that..Haven't been in deep grass since summer..But I will mention it thnx.
and she has no known alergies that she can think of.

Hey Loin, are the joints inflamed as well as sore?

Yes they are very swollen.Knees ankles wrists all swollen.
-
I don't know what is it, I just want to know were thinking of you and your wife SirLoin!
Hope they find out what it is and can cure it quickly so you two can get back to what you were doing 11 months ago.:)
Just a thought, you don't need to be in deep grass to get ticks, I belive there known to drop from the trees. They kindof Dive Bomb  , they attach to anything warm, they can even feel the heat radiating from your body.
Mom says possibility of tick, deer tick caries lyme disease. Very tiny ticks.
-
Lyme disease can lie dormant for a period before emerging...
Either way Sir Loin, I will add your wife to my prayers this evening. Take care to her and your family.

Did she take any aspirine or other medications when the symptoms first showed up?

Yes,she's been taking Vick's DayQuil(daytime cold/flu) the last several days..Not sure if she's had these before.
-
Active Ingredients (in each 15 ml tablespoon):
Acetaminophen 325 mg (pain reliever/fever reducer)
Dextromethorphan HBr 10 mg (cough suppressant)
Pseudoephedrine HCl 30 mg (nasal decongestant)
http://www.mythos.com/pharmacy/Index_DrugName.aspx?L=P&P=16
Doesn't sound like there's anything suspect in the DayQuil to me. My wife is going to post the symptoms on her BBS, if it's okay with you. There are some medical professionals there.

Yes please go ahead and post..And thnx m8.

No problem, I'll let you know as soon as something comes up.
-
This sounds alot like the way a person would react to a venomous insect/animal bite. I think the body produces histamine and that causes the wierd reactions.
-
Best wishes to your wife for a speedy recovery.
dago

I'll ask the wife if she knows anything Sirloin. Best wishes and speedy recovery to your wife. Keep us posted on her condition.
-
Sounds silly, but did she have a teflon pot/pan on the stove that overheated? In other words did the pot/pan possibly reach a temperature of over 500 degrees?
I just saw a show about this the other day and if this happens and someone breathes in the fumes severe reactions can occur. The achy joints is what sparked this question....usually follows a flu-like illness.
Probably not it at all, but best to check it.
Good luck man, hope she gets better quickly.

Here are some of the possibilities they came up with on the other board.
The person how posted this is a nurse.
"Rubella was the first thing I thought of but here are some other things that may cause rash and painful joints:
http://www.surgerydoor.co.uk/coe_db/coe/children/detail2.asp?table=medcons&level2=Rubella (Rubella)
http://unisci.com/stories/20013/0727011.htm (West Nile)
http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/a/acute_rheumatic_fever/intro.htm (rheumatic fever)
http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/r/reiter_s_syndrome/symptoms.htm (Reiter's syndrome)
http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/l/lyme_disease/symptoms.htm (Lyme disease)
Hope they are able to figure it out!"
The person who posted has lupus and her husband is a doctor.
"Rheumatic fever?
Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lupus can occasionally present very florid like that, I assume they are running all the bloodwork under the moon for this poor lady. I am not especially familiar with RA, but we lupus people are famous for impressive rashes all over.
Lyme disease?
I know truly next to nothing about leukemia (so dunno if that could be a presention) except that these the famous three "L's" that they test for when people present with lupus-ish symptoms: Lyme, Lupus, Leukemia.
I hope they figure out what's causing her symptoms soon, and that she recovers quickly!"
-
damn sirloin, really sorry to hear this. i hope she gets better soon

Wife has no clue...the wife did roll her eyes when I mentioned they were Canadian doctors. She did mention to try to get her into a University Medical center if possible, since thats where all the weird stuff is the center of attention.

WHO rates Canada as providing some of the best healthcare in the world, I'm sure SirLoin's wife is in excellant hands.

Rash all over her body, or located in specific regions? fever? exudate from rash/blisters?

That sounds suspiciously like lymes disease to me. The antibiotic amoxcycilian is what they usually use to treat that with....
Good luck.....

Well it's been an interesting 3 days for sure...Yesterday,my wife phoned me from the hospital and said the specialist examined her and was sure it was "Displaced Gonnerhea"(GC).They sat her down and started asking her questions about her sexual history and mine...Even asked her if she thought I was having an affair.
I thought my life was over to say the least after she phoned!I mean WTF???I did some researching on GC and was shocked at how easily bacteria can be spread(eg..wipe clean an infected public toilet seat and rubb your eyes(or pick your nose) and you got GC)...
I couldn't visit her as I was taking care of the baby and she spent the night in the hall on a stretcher sobbing.I didn't sleep.
I dropped the baby off at daycare the next morning and went to see her.She was so happy to see me and not once doubted my insistance this was a misdiagnoses(it was)...Anyway,later on another Dr. came in examined her and said it was NOT any type of STD and that they needed to drain fluid from her knee for further tests...He used 2 large syringes and drained almost 4 oz of clear/yellowish fluid from her right knee. This releived the pain almost instantly...I left her to pick up the baby and a few hours later she phoned saying she had been discharged and a couple of friends were picking her up.(sorry udet..not contagious)
It was a virus alright, they didn't tell her which one(the whole available doctoral staff was working on her case through the night and identified the bug, gave here anti-biotics and almost immediately the bumps and rash which covered most of her body started to fade..sorta like that Star Trek episode when Bones injects himself..well maybe not that fast)..:)
They brought home BBQ chicken and pulled a birthday cake from the freezer that was meant for last Saturday and it turned out to be the best birthday I ever had!
But it didn't start out that way...Anyway,thnx everyone for the support! It was really helpfull..
:aok
-
Praise to thats hospital staff.:aok
Probally the only reason they rushed so hard was cause it might be contagious :lol
Congrats SirLoin, and happy be-lated Birthday, and I'm glad to hear the good news.
Your wife sounds like a strong woman. That can be good and bad.;)

Anti-biotics don't work on viruses. Only bacteria. Maybe they gave her adrenaline or steroids to get rid of the symptoms.
-
I think you should, in all seriousness, sneak across the border and bring her to an American facility. They will put her in an actual room and may be able to help her. AB for a virus, indeed.
I am glad she is better, in any case, good luck!
-
Glad to hear it SirLoin. :)
Now that that seems to be cleared up.

Just couldn't let it ****ing go eh? Just had to try and get one more dig in.
Listen here you so-and-so. I was't the (fil in the blank) that started this crap by posting in a thread like this that someone might not be getting he best help. Your comment was stuipid, useless and IMO completely out of place. Now you want to take the "moral high gound" after you fled it to begin with? I don't think so.
For your information the WTO ranks Canada as having the 17th best health care in the world, and the US at 34th we do it half the cost. Our population is healthier, has a lower infant mortality rate, and is longer lived.
So don't you tell me about how our health care sucks compare to the US, it doesn't, it's better, cheaper, and the statitics prove it.
Now you can drop it.
-
The WTO is crap, my friend, and the sooner you realize that, the sooner you will be on the road to enlightenment.
Sorry for the hijack, but your problem is a perfect example of the issue: Can't get an appointment, can't get a diagnosis, can't get a ROOM fer christ's sake.
-
I'm sure he can get her a room in hospital in US, question is, does he have a house to mortage to pay for it 2 days of rest and 3 pills ?
-
Here is the thing about US hospitals: They treat you, fix you up and then try and make you mortgage the house. Personally, I will take the treatment and the bills, rather than lie in a hallway without a diagnosis, but that is just me.

WHO. And what about thier system for ranking countries health care systems? And what about it exactly is lacking. What system do you use to compare health care systems of differing countries?
Sorry for the hijack, but your problem is a perfect example of the issue: Can't get an appointment, can't get a diagnosis, can't get a ROOM fer christ's sake.
People aren't left in stretchers in US hosipitals?
Response time is just one criteria for measuring a health care system.
As far as anectdotal evidence is concerned. A friend of mine was in a car accident in the US. He went into shock, he got taken to a hosipital he was treated immediately by a doctor, the doctor asked him three questions, charged him $600 USD, for the privledge and let him go. When he got back to Canada he started having back problems, apparently he had a hair line fracture in his spine.
-
Don't blame the Hospitals or Doctors for the high cost of medical treatment, blame the greedy lawyers who can't wait to run to court sueing the crap outta them for every minor excuse they can come up with, real or imagined. Maybe throw in some blame for the people who are hiring the lawyers, and the asnine juries handing out incredibly ridiculous judgements.

just to through out an interesting statistic I heard the other day.
in the US, in 1980 (right about the start of hmo's and 'managed health care'). you had 1 person doing clerical work (filing, billing and processing claims, not normal chart keeping and records related more to your health than colecting money) for every 10 'hands on' health care professionals (dr's, nurses, orderlys, whatever), now it's close to 11 procesing claims for every 10 hands on.

not true. You can get medical treatment at a Level 1 Trauma center hospitals (Which have the worlds best surgeons/doctors working there) in the U.S. My wife sees homeless patients all day long, repeat drug overdoses, etc. Its all on the tax payers dime.
Matter of fact, they have one guy they call "Odie"...he's cost the Seattle tax payers about 1.1 million dollars in the last two years,...4 drug overdoses, combined with resescitating him back to life, and long stays in the hospital.
Its a federal law called "The good Samaritan Law".
-
sorry...i just find it pointless arguing over something like this....
I'm sure your wife is doin a fine job rip....my hats off to any Doctor....in any country....its just a damn tough field to be in.
I'm just glad Sirloins wife is doin good....
and see...this is what i like about our COUNTRIES......if they couldn't find the problem....hop skip over the boarder and voila....help from our EVIL american friends:rofl
-
Glad to hear the wife is doing well.
Shame on Rip for going off topic...c'mon...does it really kill you to have a thread not all about you?
