Title: Is it just me or is going to the movies a horror story more then fun?
Post by: GtoRA2 on November 17, 2003, 12:30:46 PM
What I mean by this.

I say 4 out of 5 times I go the movies, it is ruined by some ******* in the theater.

Like a case of a guy taking 3 cell phone calls, spaced about 20 minutes apart.... loudly.

Or the case of white trash day at the theater, I swear, it was a 300 pound women, 400 pound man in a muscle shirt and Bermuda shorts and his two daughter who would not shut up. Well they did after I turned around and told them to shut up.

Or the case of two old ladies, who just would not stop talking, all they needed is the "do not make me kill you" stare.

Do not forget the Laser pointers..

Or how about ******* parents who bring kids to young for the movie in. They cry, or scream or whine...

The best is when the little rodents run around the theater like animals, sometimes even smacking you on the back of the head.

How about the people who seem like they should be in a hospital hacking and coughing, sometimes on you.

Why oh why are people so ****ing rude now?  Is it just me? Do I have bad theater Karma?

My wife was really excited about going to go see "Elf" with some leftover credit she had on an AMC Movies gift card I had given her back in July.  When she first got it, we'd seen the 2nd "Matrix" film and still had $8 leftover on the card, so the ticket seller dude gave us a receipt showing the credit.  So, we went to the same theatre with the receipt and asked for 2 tickets to see "Elf".

After some back and forth with the ticket seller dude, a ticket seller dudette, and the manager, it turned out that we needed the card itself, rather than the receipt even though it had been redeemed at that same theatre.  I suggested that it was no big deal, we'd pay the money and get our tickets.  But, by then she was too emotionally upset to really enjoy the film so we left.

My general rule is, if its a comedy, I'll wait for the video, so not seeing "Elf" really didn't upset me one bit.

If its a battle movie, an outdoors movie, or an outer space movie, I'll see it in the theatre so that I can enjoy the big sounds and big screen.  Naturally, that incident isn't going to stop me from seeing "Master and Commander" on the big screen.  Its a sweeping ocean-going epic with lots of booming cannons that needs the big panoramic screen and booming speaker system to do it justice.

The reasons you listed are the same ones I used to rationalize buying a HDTV Home Theater System. The 6-8 months I have to wait for the DVD are worth it. I can see the same movies (including deleted scenes) and enjoy them in peace and quiet while drinking a cold beer.

Hey I went to see "Master and Commander" on Friday... guy behind me was a heavy breather... 400 lbs of blubber...

Then there's the kids with diarhea mouth...
Sure I wish I could stand up and yell at them to STFU... but then they look at me... like I'm the one with the problem!

It's much easier to put vic's vapor rub under my nose... and  quietly, surreptiously, set off a stink bomb....

A little Sulfer-hydroxide is my way of saying GTFOOH

Yeah, it's really not worth rasing my bloodpressure to put up with go-tards at the theater.

So on the rare occasion that I get out to a movie, here's what I do.

1. Wait until the movies been out at least 2 week.
2. Go to a Sunday Morning (or noon) showing.

There are usually only a few people in the theater, and without the herd mentality, everyones on pretty good behaviour.

Except when we caught "A beautiful mind" a few years back and there was an "assisted living" field trip to the movie. That sucked.

I went to the matinee at 12:00PM and the movie Started at 2:35
35 minutes of fricken previews..  That I have trouble tolerating..
Waiting for the DVD is always a better choice...

I hate crowds and especially crowded theatres. Lot more likely to sit near some inconsiderate obnoxious butthead in a crowded theatre. Go on a weekday after the movie's been out for a couple of weeks.

LOL the last time Mrs RTR and I went to the movies  (Lord of the rings i believe) I hit upon the very thing to keep the evening peaceful.

We went in and got our seats about 15 minutes before showtime. As the theater started to fill, and people would approach the area where we were sitting, I would start to hack and cough. I mean really hack and cough, complete with wretching and loud snort type sniffing.

At first Mrs RTR asked me if I was allright, to which I could only nod, so as not to "give up the jig".

Anyway, each and everytime the "intruders" would pick a seat a few rows away.  It was the best in theater movie experience I have ever had. No rude seat bumping, no body loudly chewing popcorn in your ear, nobody continually whispering right behind/beside/infront of you. We had a nice buffer zone around us, as no-one wanted to sit beside the dieing guy, and maybe catch some disease.

Once the lights were dimmed and the coming attractions started, I just settled in for the movie...No worries

The only drawback is mrs RTR isn't too sure she wants to go to the theater anymore with me. (in itself maybe a blessing in diguise?)
Cheers.

The second time I went to see Freddie vs. Jason, my friend and I were blessed with having two idiots and 5 kids sit directly behind us.  This was an evening showing on a weeknight, and the movie let out at about 11pm.  Little tardlings did the usual seat kicking, plus nonstop talking and gawking throughout the entire theater.  Fortunately, I saw it the day before in an almost empty theater so I didn't really care.  The best part was when one of the girls (who couldn't have been more than 10) repeating the main character chick when she said "welcome to my world, [female dog]" to the chuckling delight of her parents.  Oh well, I guess someone has to work at the drive-thru.

Was at a theatre about 3 yrs ago with my gf, when a dick in the row in front of me kept getting calls on his cell phone, after the 3rd one, I stood up, reached over, grabbed the phone, and threw it to the front of the theater where it smashed loudly on the concrete in the front corner.  Many other movie goers loudly cheered.  Mr. Cell Phone started to protest, but thought the better of it and left.

While this is not a movie story, I was flying out to NC the other day from CO, and as I fly a lot, got bumped up to first class.  Well... this little snot nose punk was also in first class, the seat behind me, and just happened to have feet long enough to push the back of my seat, plus for good measure ensure the occasional kick was set into my back.  To top this off, after repeated talkings to by the flight attendant, little Johnnie decides he needs to go to the bathroom several times, and ensures he whacks the back of my seat each time.  Well the last time as little Johnnie was running back to his seat, I nonchalantly stuck my foot out, and WHAP!!! he plastered his face on the floor.  After 5 minutes of whimpering, he STFU for the rest of the flight.  About 30 mins after the trip, the flight attendant came back and brought a drink and on the napkin was the word "THanks so much!" and a little smilie face.  She left with a huge grin.  I had to keep from laughing too hard.

Yep, dip *****s suck, but they end up getting there own in the end.

if the movie requires a big screen.  I'll either catch it in the middle of the week or see it at a McMenamins (still loud on the weekend but they serve drinks   ),  otherwise I can wait for the dvd.

I usually just wait until the movie has been out a couple weeks then go on a Monday or Tuesday when there are fewer people out and about especially if I can catch an early afternoon showing.
