I was surprised to see some drivers go around or skirt (pun intended) some of the bigger obstacles. Ofcourse that was always followed up with much ribbing and ridicule over the radio. lol "Dude!! My wife is outdriving you!!" and the ever present yells of "radish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" lol I can't wait to go back.

One of the guys that rode with me is a friend from work who owns a lifted jeep and he was very impressed. I went having huge respect for this vehicle but I had no idea it was capable to the extent that it was. The jeep friend saw a particular hill we drove past and said "Thats a pretty extreme hill, I don't think we'll be going up that one." The entire group made it up that same hill about 20mins later :aok

Off road capability is a matter of relativity..>  I remember constantly pulling hummers out of the mud in Hon's .  They would always get stuck.    Now, a Bradley on the other hand...  tree in the way?  nope they break like matchsticks if ya just keep your speed up... some of the bigger ones would slow ya down a touch if you nailed enough of them in a row.  I remember almost getting killed because the mud on the trail started pouring inside the drivers hatch while I was driving.  The hatch is more than 6 feet off the ground..  We made it through just fine though!   We would almost always catch OPFOR scouts in Hummers if they went off road since they would have to actually avoid what was in front of them.  I feared nothing but really big boulders and cliffs..  they hurt.

When I lived in Rockford I worked with a guy named Ken who raced midgets.  On the bottom of his midget he had put in big letters, "Oh My God They Killed Kenny!".

Some would have you believe that, but a little research would prove otherwise.

Yes, some parts are shared. (why redesign something that already works) But No it's not a suburban or Tahoe for that matter underneath. I'd love to see either one of those vehicles even attempt what we waltzed through.

Hehee, midgets are a traditional form of racing in the US.  They are very small open wheel dirt track racers.  About 1000 lbs and 400 hp.  Ken has a propensity for getting his car upside down, so he decided to put something there for the benefit of the fans in the grandstands.  :)

What like crossing a river thats maybe 4ft. deep and climbing up sand dunes? Hell a Subaru Outback could do that.  Bring that H2 over some rocks and see what happens.

See thats what happens when you do real offroading in an H2.  Not trouncin around in a creek bed/sandbox.

oookaaaay....I'd like to see them and the outback do it without incurring damage. ;)

Son, without a rear locker you'd get stuck in that sand. Those lil 4wd traction controlled grocery getters would also get high-centered in the trails behind the trees where the ruts undulate in altering frequencies. If we were slappin the skid plates on every roll you can bet I'd be pullin you out

BTW I know that guy on anoter forum I don't even need to watch it. He probably snapped his tie-rod right? I'd have to drive to colorado to do that. Atleast I'm taking mine out where I can, I don't live in colorado.

That ford is almost as tough as the last time I went offroading, gasp three years ago.  I was with this french girl and she had rented a '79 toyota starlet.  We went looking for some 15th-century bridge the Venetians built to carry copper down from the mountains of Cyprus.  Unfortunately, the direct route there was blocked by some off-road rally race.  So we backed out, pulled into some village to refuel (smartest move of the day), asked the navigator of the rally car at the other pump how we'd avoid the race, and flanked 20 miles W before inserting N.

After a couple of wrong turns and flooded-out roads, crawling over massive exposed root systems, we found the bridge.  This place was way the hell out of the way.  I mean, the only tourist guidebook that even mentioned this bridge had a drawing, and, as we figured out later, it was of a 19th-century turkish bridge further downstream.

This place was deserted.  I spent about three hours there doing whatever it is you do with a pretty french girl, a bottle of wine and a 15th-century bridge, and the only sign of other humans we heard was the occasional jet bound for Larnaka or Beirut.

We decide to leave, but given the fact we're offroading in a compact, and the dirt track hasn't been tended to in over 20 years, decide to go in the direction opposite of the way we came from.  2 clicks up the hill we hit a village deserted  by Turkish Cypriots in the aftermath of the 1974 invasion: roofless huts with greek alphanumeric spraypainting on them, lest their inhabitants ever return; a tiny little mosque with a sheetmetal minaret.
We came from the East. To the North and West are mountains and beyond that, the Turks.  So we decide to go S.  We roll down the side of the hill from the village and head to the valley where this stream flows, much like the one in that fording picture.  There's a bridge, but it's one of those solid concrete ones that looks like it washed out over a decade ago.  A ford's upstream a bit.  She takes the dinky little FWD carburator job down the track in third gear, whips hard 90 degrees right, and blows through the ford, taking water halfway up the door.  I don't know how she managed not to flood it.

We think we're safe as we start the climb up the hills on the South side of the stream.  It's now about dusk. We can hear distant barking, a sure sign of civilization.  Our mistake is shown to us when the barking gets considerably louder, and, indeed, a pack of wild dogs starts chasing us.  Run up the far side of the hill, over the top, and in the distance we see the lights of some village.

It's night as we roll into the village, and encounter a villager walking on the main road.  He turns to gape at our dust-and-mud covered Starlet.  The French girl rolls down the window, and asks him in Greek "Do you know the way to Nicosia?"

He laughed at us.

The morals of the story:

A) A 100-lb French girl can outdrive you rutabagas.
B) Every rental car is an SUV.

Im just saying from the pictures you posted you didnt go thru anything thats even remotely near REAL OffRoading,  face it an H2 is a glorified grocery getter.  You can bring it thru sand and water but the fact remains that an H2 is nothing more.  Now the mil-spec Hummer is a great vehicle, unfortunatley GM decided to cater to the Metrosexual, DINK, Soccer Mom crowd and built another useless SUV.

FWIW I've seen a Jeep snap a tie rods too, on a trail outside of Grand Junction.  We lashed it up with some spare chain and pushed/pulled him all the way back out.  PITA.

Pfunk, go easy on me man. That was only my second time off roading. Atleast mine goes off road. I couldn't get pictures of the rougher stuff because of the close quarters and by that time pouring rain. Sir, you can think it's nothing more all you want but until you can slap some proof on the table I'm gonna go with my limited experience in one. Besides the H1 it's my opinion that the H2 is the most capable machine you can drive off a dealership lot stock.

Yeah funked, according to some other guys I know, you want that tie rod to snap. Otherwise you might end up with more severe damage elsewhere.

Yep we had another guy snap his axle.  Of course he had a 350 LT-1 motor in his Jeep.  He bought a front axle that unfortunately contained mismatched parts.  So the splines were only partially in mesh, and as soon as he got to a big rock, the left front snapped.  He drove it out though.

I hate to brake it to you man. The H2 is ok. But it is far from the best factory stock 4X4.

The best factory wheel goes to this Vehicle

The 2003 Jeep Rubicon.

From the factory it comes with
31 inch mud tires.
4.11 gears.
Solid axles (this is a HUGE advantage over the IFS on your hummer)
4 wheel  disk brakes.
Dana 44 front and rear difs, with lockers for both, that are driver controlled.
More and better skid plating.
a 4 to 1 low transfer case.
Non anti lock brakes, cause they suck of road.
And I know there is more I am forgeting.
Off road on anything but sand the Ruby is going to each your lunch. Or so every review of both has said.

I was going to buy one, but the dealers wanted to much money for them and would not deal so I bought something else. Man I still want one though.

From the Pics, the 2000 wrangler I had with 31s would have had NO trouble at all on any of that. Any wrangler would give you a pretty good run for the money but the wrangler rubicon is the king.

Absolutly. Hell part of the reason I went with a 2 wheel drive Yukon over the Ruby was:   I had a trip to WA coming and the return I was going to have the GF 2 kids a 80 pound labrador, all my guns and all the lugage for the trip. It BARELY fit in the yukon, it would not have happend in the Ruby.

The Ruby is not all that good on road, the IFS on the H2 is far better for that. The Ruby is a tad under powered compared to the H2.  Like I said above the Ruby is small. You are not fitting four people in it if you plan on taking anything else.

I trust GM for build quality more then I do jeep and for relibility. Though the 2 years I owned my wrangler it had no problems other then paint bubbles.

I have loads of respect for you taking your hummer of road. They get a bad rep from the jerkoffs, like the one I worked with who loved it cause it got 12 MPG and laughed when I asked him when he was going to wheel it.   He polished it 2 times a week lol.
He was not amused when I took the comparison of a H2 and a ruby and photo copyied it and stuck it in his cube.

I still have a hankering for that damn ruby! I need to be rich!

Post by: GtoRA2 on November 18, 2003, 03:06:01 PM
Mrblack
That depends on the trails, I would put my money on a Ruby over a H1 most of the time. Simply because the Ruby will fit on the trails and the H1 will not.

The Original hummer was meant to use its axleshafts as the fuse in the suspesion from what I understand so they brake axles alot.

The ruby would give one a damn good run for the money in most places if not do better.

For the love of god, do not refer to those things as 'hummers'.  Use the real name "H2".  They are based on the Silverado pickup truck chasis, not the military vehicle.

I can seee where the ruby would have an advantage in rock cralling.
but i would still take a H1 for most off roading.

Yep Driveshafts & U-joints. Are a Jeepers best friends.  I had a buddie of mine that kep a spare set of U-Joint in his tool box for just that event.

Thankfully Jeep's are solid axles :D  Just pull the broken driveshaft and drive home. I've seen it done lots of times. But broken tie rod's I haven't seen alot of. I'd say more cut tires and bent rims are a technicality.

Acid,
I'd suggest you get a "FULL" size spare tire/wheel that matches your other tires. Best word of advice I can give you for being off road. Not sure if those come with full size or temp tire. But you don't want to drive out of the stick's with a temp on...Also every month check the air in the Spare.   (Personal experiance, never checked it only had 10lbs of air.. talk about DOH!)

My opinion would be a Jeep. The rubicon is nice, but I'd rather build up a stock wrangler for less $$$.

I drive a jeep, and I do alot of wheeling. I've been surprised numerous times where a stock YJ can get you if you try. I run with my brother's bronco club alot as well, those things surprise the hell out of me also.

Jeeps are great if you don't plan to carry too much cargo or passengers. I can carry 1 passenger and all the tools, supplies, parts I'll need. But I can't carry anything else. Thats where a fullsize comes in handy.

IMO if you plan on doing any serious wheeling you need something with a solid front axle. Most of the guys I know with IFS trucks are wanting to swap in a soild front.

If you mostly drive around town and only do light wheeling IFS is OK.

In all a Jeep is a far more capable off road vehicle than a H2. However, cargo space is limiited and road manners are lacking.

Its also better to have a beater for offroading. If it dosen't get banged up, beat up, scratched up then you need to find harder trails. I also haven't seen too many guys with nice new trucks willing put them at risk.

I've seen all kinds of crazy things on trails around here, including an 84 mustang on 38's. But I've never seen a H2 or other brand new shiny truck. Though I have seen quite a few new jeeps getting broken in the hard way.

My Dad and I put a Pinto body on a 1943 Willy's Jeep frame. We dropped a 305 into the Pinto and made a hunting ride out of it. I also had another Willy's with another 305 in it that would get 4 MPG and had three fuel tanks. It was my off-road beat the handsomehunk in the jacked up lift kit (insert 4x4 here) on the power line. I had to go back several times and pull guys out or carry them home and then bring 'em back the next day with shovels to pull their heavy trucks outta the swamp they got stuck in.

Looks like a hell of alot of fun - too bad the peanut gallary had to quote statements from Readers Digest.

As for the most offroad capable SUV, Ive got to vote for the Defender 90.  All balls, no leather.  ;)

I used to want one of these real bad - bought a Cherokee instead because I needed more room.

Either way - you made some gas station owner very happy that day.  :D

I'm still wondering why they stopped imported the Disco.

That's perfect stuff for H2's.  Deep sand for those tall tires and torque.  However, most other places a CJ will run circles around it.

If I had to go off-road, I'd still take my XTerra before I'd take a H2.

You don't need 31inch tires if your car is having portal axles (portal hubs).
Land Rovers are pretty good thought still not in the same class with Volvo's old C303, Pinzgauer or Unimog.
Pic of Pinzgauer 6x6 showing its rear portal axle (http://www.kolumbus.fi/staga/pinzgauer_portal_axle.jpg).

For offroading I'd take C303, Pinzgauer or Unimog over any overweight Hummer...  Those are too big and heavy (IMHO of course).
They don't have leather seats or electric windows or air conditioning but you really don't miss those when you're stuck in a deep mud in the middle of nowhere  :D

I use to drive Unimog's in the Army and they are great offroad vehicles, amazing what they can do. And don't think I ever managed to get one stuck. Massive ground clearence, awsome fun to drive.
